Joseph Barlow and Louisa Laxton

Joseph Barlow was born c1806 in Wilkes Co North Carolina, the first son of John Barlow, Jr. and his second wife, Elizabeth Kendall Merritt.

On 24 April 1828 in Wilkes Co North Carolina, he married Louisa Laxton, born c1812 to Thomas Laxton and Mary 'Polly' Carlton. Thomas Laxton was the son of Levi Laxton and Nancy Tilley. Mary Carlton was the daughter of Lewis Carlton and Elizabeth Eve, all of Wilkes Co, all or most of whose families came from Virginia.

Joseph and Louisa are still living in 1880 at which time they are listed in Caldwell Co census, ages 73 and 67.  Neither dates of death nor places of burial have been determined.

At the time of the writing of the book, a date was not known for the marriage of Calvin and Mary, and it was thought that only one child was born to Calvin and his first wife, Meritta. However, in July of 2000, Ruth Barlowe Williams found in Caldwell Co Register of Deeds office, the following:

The marriage took place at the residence of S.H. Oxford, JP, in the Little River Twp.

This confirms, that Ritta "Meritta" Bentley was the mother of all of Calvin's known children, since all of them were born before Calvin and Mary were married.

Ruth also found, in the index to the 1880 census for Watauga Co Calvin's name and the 5 youngest children, but no wife, so Ritta was dead in 1880. She writes: I hope to locate the actual census page to see what the ages of the children were in 1880. I believe Calvin "fudged" a little about his age when he married Mary.

I found the 1850 census listing for Joseph and Louisa Barlow, and Calvin was still living with them.  His age, at that time, was stated as 21.

Military:  Calvin served in the Confederate Services from 15 March 1862 until 27 July 1862 when he was discharged for epilepsy.

Elvira's marriage record in Caldwell Co North Carolina is undated, but it is believed to be 1853, when Gabriel Russell performed the ceremony between ELVIRA BARLOW and LEWIS A. HOLDER.

Lewis A. Holder was in the Confederate Services, Company A, 22 Regiment, and was twice wounded and was once a prisoner of war.

A descendant of the Holders tells me that many of its family members went to Mississippi.

Pickins Barlow served in Co A, 22nd Regiment CSA and was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. After the war, he was one fo the men who freed this territory from the terror of the mauraders of Fort Hamby.

Note: John Barlow's death certificate lists Rosanna as a Conley though the informant was, John's daughter-in-law, and she inadvertantly gave wrong information. It is also listed in LDS records as Conley.

It is not known what happened to Daniel, as Rosanna, apparently married a Long before 1910 in Pulaski Co Arkansas, and was married to Edward Thompson in Washington at the time of her death.

The 1921-1922 Pine Bluff City Directories show that John B. Barlow was living at 2001 E. Sixth Avenue, and that he was employed at St L S-W Ry Co. Jennie is living in the home, as are their three sons. Edgar D. is employed by the same company as his father, 'Louis' is a clerk, and John B. Jr. is a driver for Camp Grocery Company.

I think his middle initial was "T" though.

The 1925-1926 city directory does not list this family, perhaps they had moved outside the city limits.

John T. Barlow - 1940

John Barlow, 64, well known employee of the Cotton Belt Railway Company for 31 years, died Saturday night, at 9:45 o'clock at the Cotton Belt hospital, following an illness of three weeks. He was born on July 08, 1875 in Mississippi where he resided until moving to Arkansas.

He made his home at Garnett prior to coming to Pine Bluff in 1909, and had been connected with the Cotton Belt railway company in the bridge building department until two years ago, when he was given the watchman's job at Third and Walnut Street.

Mr. Barlow had been a member of the Carr Memorial church for a number of years.

In addition to his widow, he is survivied by three sons, Ed, John and Louis Barlow, all of this city, three grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Lula Bryant of Dermott Arkansas, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 4 o'clock this afternoon at Ralph Robinson and Son Mortuary Chapel, in charge of the Rev. Stanley T. Baugh, pastor of Carr Memorial Methodist Church.

Burial was in the family lot in Bellwood Cemetery in charge of Ralph Robinson and Son Mortuary.

Active pallbearers were:
P.G. Huntley, T.L. Lowery, Boone Walker, A.C. Ernst, Fred Culver, Willie Borecky, J. B. Livingston, and Robert Hicks.

Mrs. Jennie Lee Barlow - 1945

Mrs. Jennie Lee Barlow, 70, resident of Pine Bluff for 36 years, wife of the late John T. Barlow, passed away Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock at the Davis hospital following an illness of several weeks.

She was born in Lincoln county, daughter of the late Dock and Betty Lee, early Arkansas settlers.

Mrs. Barlow spent her girhood in Lincoln county where she receieved her education and was later married to the late Mr. Barlow. The Barlow family came to Pine Bluff in 1909 and since that time had made their home here.

She was a member of the Holly Springs Baptist Church.

Her husband, the late Mr. Barlow died here on February 21, 1940.

Mrs. Barlow is survived by three sons, Ed Barlow and John Barlow of Pine Bluff, Louis Barlow of Vancouver Washington, one brother, Bob Lee of Star City, four grandchildren, Virgil Barlow and Aileene Barlow of Pine Bluff, Margie Barlow and John Robert Barlow of St. Louis, Mo, and a number of nieces and nephews including Mr. W. G. Goudy of Pine Bluff.

Funeral services will he held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son mortuary. In charge of the Rev. Virgil D. Keeley, pastor of Carr Memorial Methodist church. (that's how it is written!)

Burial will be on the family lot in Bellwood Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be: A.E. Leath, Tom King, Jr., W.J. Huntley, P.G. Huntley, Sr., P.G. Huntley, Jr., B.K. Bethge, R.I. Hicks, and J.C. Jacks.

James and Eliza Jane lived in Caldwell Co a few years, where their first three children were born. About 1886, they moved to the Upper Creek section of Burke Co where they joined the Smyrna Baptist Church in July July 1887. After Eliza Jane's death, James bought a farm on Yellow Mountain Road, west of Morgantown, known as Windy Hill Farm. A grandson, Frank Michaels bought this from the estate in 1936, and sold it a few years later to R.O. Huffman.

James Granville Holder, prominent Linville township farmer, died almost instantly early Thursday morning at his home on the Yellow Mountain Road, death resulting from a heart attack following a two year period of ill health. Death occurred one month prior to his 76th birthday, which would have observed April 7.

JOEL BOONE HOLDER acknowledged a son, LINNIE BEAN, born 04 May 1895, to MARIETTA JANE BEAN, who later married NELSON MELVIN BROWN.

A representative of Lennie's widow wrote Joel Boone Holder giving details on Linnie's death on 09 April 1951 at VAH, Oakland, California.

J. Boone Holder and his second wife, Virginia, raised her niece, SARAH CORNELIA 'NEALIE' BEAVER, born October 1904, who married CLARENCE BRADSHAW.

Frances Barlowe Dillingham, daughter of Oren James and Millie Williams Barlowe compiled most of the data on this family. For several years, Frances collected family information. She got information from Family Bibles, public records and interviews with lots of family members, including her father, Oren. In 1983, she compiled all of her information and wrote the below referenced family history as a labor of love for her family. The majority of the information for the Oren James Barlowe Family, submitted herewith, was copied from this family history written by Frances Barlowe Dillingham.

Oren James Barlowe was born in Watauga Co North Carolina. He lived with his parents and siblings in the Grandfather Community. He attended the 2nd Grandfather School. As a young man, he was a farmer and timber worker. He was a member of Watauga Baptist Church, which his maternal great grandfather, Isaac McClurd, helped form. Isaac McClurd was the first pastor of this church, and he served as pastor for many years.

Oren left Watauga County about 1930. He worked on the Mississippi River out of St. Louis, Missouri for a while before moving to McDowell Co North Carolina. Oren worked mostly in the furniture industry in McDowell Co. He was a dedicated, hard working and God fearing man. Most of his life, he was a Baptist, but late in life, he joined the Church of God. He died on June 23, 1971, at age 75.

Ruth Barlowe Williams writes:

I now have proof census records, and family knowledge - that the birth name of my grandfather, Oren James Barlowe, was "James Oren Barlow." Two of his children have related a story that he told them. He did not like his initials - JOB. So, he just switched his first and middle names. He was called "Oren," so I suppose it didn't seem to him that this was a "big deal." As for the "e," well, it appears, from family stories, that he added the "e" because a school teacher told his daughter, Edith, that the name should be spelled "Barlowe." Aunt Edith told me that she became very upset, so Grandpa Oren added the "e" to please her. After Grandpa Oren started signing his name as "Barlowe," the rest of his family followed suit, with the exception of his brother, Stanley. Grandpa Oren applied for a delayed birth certificate --birth records were not recorded in the public records of NC until 1913, so people born before that time could get a "delayed" birth certificate with certain proofs, i.e., Family Bible records-- , and he received same with the name, "Oren James Barlowe." So, in effect, he made his name "legal."

Ercel was born in Watauga County North Carolina. He lived with his parents, Oren and Bell. Shortly before his 6th birthday, Ercel's mother, Bell, died of pneumonia, at age 28. Ercel remembered his father Oren telling him, in later years, that Bell went to McDowell Co to care for her mother, Addie Stamey Williams, who was seriously ill. Addie died on December 19, 1928 of "influenza, with double pneumonia being contributory" Soon after Bell, returned home, she, too, became seriously ill and she died on January 09, 1929, just 3 weeks after her mother died. Many times, Ercel expressed regret that he could not remember much about his mother.

After his mother's death, family members cared for Ercel and his siblings so that Oren could work. Primarily, their grandparents, Julius and Tempie, and their Uncle Vernie and Aunt Eva cared for the children. Oren married again, but this marriage did not work out for Oren and his family, so Oren got a divorce.

In October 1931, Oren married Millie Williams, a first cousin to Bell, and Oren established a new home for his family in McDowell Co.

In May 1944, Ercel enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and was honorably discharged in February 1948. After 18 months as a civilian, Ercel decided that the Navy offered him more opportunities for advancement than he had found as a civilian. So, in August 1947, he re-enlisted in the Navy and made the Navy his career.

Ercel proudly served his country for 22 years. He retired from the Navy in November 1967. He retired holding one of the highest ranks possible for an enlisted man to earn.

After retiring from the Navy, Ercel worked in several diverse jobs, including sales, long distance truck driver and school bus driver.

Ercel was a strong advocate of education. He received his GED (high school diploma) and some college credits while he was in the Navy. He constantly stressed importance of education to his children. He had a dream that all of his children would obtain a college degree. He lived to see that dream come true.

Ercel was a proud man. He was proud of his heritage and he passed that along to his children -- always stressing the importance of family. Ercel loved God, he loved his family and he loved his country.

Ercel died September 23, 1999, at the age of 76. A Navy team from Norfolk, Virginia, his last duty station, performed military rites at the graveside. Ercel would have been pleased with the dignity afforded him and his family at his final rites.

John died 12 June 1941 in a car accident in Klamath Falls Oregon while residing in an Oregon Hotel. His body was returned to Everett Washington for burial.

John Barlow, 64, former employee of the Great Northern Railway in Everett, but for the past 36 years a G___man on the Union Pacific out of Seattle, died from injuries recieved in an auto accident near Klamath Falls, Oregon, late Thursday. Mr. Barlow leaves his widow, Hilda, son, Lee Barlow, and brother, Emmett Barlow of Portland, a son, Jack Barlow of Seattle; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Bahlmaier of Carmel, Calif. and Mrs. Helen Cummins of Portland; his mother, Mrs. Anna Thompson of 1912 Twenty-third street; two sisters, Mrs. C. E. Bonnell of 2302 Lombard avenue and Mrs. William Jameson of 4201 Terrace drive and one grandchild survives. Funeral services for Jr. Barlow will be held at the chapel of Challacombe & Fickle at 1 o'clock Wedesday afternoon. The Reverend C.W. Butterfield will conduct the service. Burial will be in the family plot at Evergreen Cemetery.

The death certificate shows his birth date to have been altered from September 01, 1874, to September 01, 1883, per affidavit #4376, date not legible - reason for the change was not stated-- The date on the funeral record shows his birthdate as September 01, 1874, this information given by John's second wife, Hilda. Neither date is thought to be correct, as Daniel and Adelia were married in in 1874. Ruth, who is John's daughter said that John changed his birthdate so that he could go to work for the railroad, and this is the cause for all the conflict in his birth year. The true year is thought to be 1885.   Hilda is the person listed as his wife on his death certificate, per informant, Mrs. Lee Barlow. She the wife of John's son Lee. Lee had also been involved in the fatal accident with John Barlow, and was seriously injured, thus his wife was the informant on John's death certificate.

John and his mother, Rosanna Carnley Barlow Thompson are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Evergreen Washington, in the Barlow Plot. This information was verified by Vernon Barlow, who personally went to the cemetery. Two other unrelated persons are also buried in the plot.

Body Found in Channel after 11 Weeks in Water

The body of Lee Milton Barlow, 49, the workman of a dredge being used as part of the Fire Island Inland Bridge project, was found floating in the state channel Tuesday night.
Barlow, of 150 Statesman Street, North Babylon, had been missing from the dredge Woodmere since March 21. He was last seen when a service tugboat dropped him off at the dredge for his night's work.
He was reported missing by Gilbert Raynor, an official of the Fort Neck Dredge Company of Merrick. Raynor's report touched off a massive search by units of the county police marine division and the Coast Guard.
The search was given up on March 28, after a week with no success.
Yesterday morning, fisherman aboard an open boad Captain Joseph, spotted the body. The Coast was called and arrived at the scene at 8:25.
The body was taken to Captree State Park, where identification was made by detectives of the Long Island State Parkway Police and Mr. Barlow's family. According to police, identification has been difficult because of the 11-week period the body was in the water.
Tuesday night, Adam Kopf of West Islip, coming through the state channel in his boat spotted a body, which is said to have been Mr. Barlow's. Mr. Kopf called the Coast Guard, but they were unable to find the body until the re-sighting by the Captain Joseph fisherman yesterday morning.
Mr. Barlow, a native of the state of Washington, had resided with his family on Stateman Street for a year. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; children, Rosemary, Kevin and Brian; sisters Helen Nold and Ruth Bihlmaier of California, a brother, John Barlow of Washington.
He was employed as an operating engineer for the dredging company. His body is reposing at the Lindenhurst Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time.

This family appears to have had their share of tragedy. Lee's father, John was killed in a car accident in 1941, Lee had been a survivor of that same accident and was seriously injured, but lived. At the time of his death, Lee was 49 years of age. Just this year, (2000) Rosemary (submitter of this information, along with Shirley Stewart) lost a brother to yet another tragic accident, he was 48 years of age.

John Barlow Dies At His Pine Bluff Home

John B. Barlow, 49-year-old employee of Cotton Belt Railway, died at 2:30 a.m. today at his home at 501 Utah. He suffered a sudden heart attack.
Mr. Barlow was born in August of 1904, the son of the late John B. and Jennie Lee Barlow, at Star City. He came to Pine Bluff with his parents when he was a child, and attended the First Ward School, and Pine Bluff High School.
A member of the Carr Memorial Methodist Church, Mr. Barlow was active in the Men's Bible Class and the Brotherhood of the church. He also was a member of the Jacob Brump Lodge No 160, F and A Masons; the Lafayette Chapter No. 7, Royal Arch Masons; and the International Brotherhood of Blacksmiths, Drop Forgers and Helpers.
Survivors include his widow, the former Annie Warren of Pine Bluff; one daughter, Jennie LaVerne Barlow of Pine Bluff; and two brothers, Ed Barlow of Pine Bluff and Louis Barlow of Washington.
Funeral services probably will be held Friday. Completed arrangements will be announced by the Robinson Mortuary.

Services For John B. Barlow To Be Held

Funeral services for John B. Barlow, 49, Cotton Belt Railway employee, who died early yesterday at his Pine Bluff home, will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Robinson Mortuary chapel.
The Rev. Clem Baker, pastor of the Carr Memorial Methodist Church at England, will conduct the services.
Burial will be in the Bellwood Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be A.C. Ernst, Harold Atkinson, Johnny Montgomery, A.O. Griffin, C.E. Scott, Arthur Leath, W.J. Huntley, and Fred Moore.

Annie Virginia Warren Barlow, 66, of Bossier City, Louisiana, died here Sunday.
Mrs. Barlow had been visiting in Pine Bluff and was returning to Bossier City, when she became ill and died, according to a spokesman for Ralph Robinson & Son Mortuary at Pine Bluff.
A native of Marse Hill, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Newton and Rosa May Dufur Warren. She was reared at Buckner, Magnolia and Pine Bluff. She had attended schools at Buckner and Pine Bluff. She received her nurse's training at Pines Vocational-Technical School at Pine Bluff and had worked at Davis Hospital at Pine Bluff. She was last employed as a nurse at the Magnolia Manor.
She was a member of Carr Memorial United Methodist Church at Pine Bluff. She married John Barlow in 1927 at Pine Bluff and he died in 1954.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jennie Roberts of Bossier CIty and a grandson.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Robinson by Reverend John Lindsay. Burial will be in Bellwood Cemetery at Pine Bluff.
