Generation 4
THOMAS4 BARLOW (John3, John2, Thomas1) was born 1797 in Wilkes Co North Carolina and died in 1872.

He married SARAH KILBY February 20, 1822 in Wilkes Co North Carolina, daughter of ABRAHAM KILBY and ELIZABETH RASH

Rhio's Graphic's  Bunches of Barlows   Page 11

Apparently Thomas died intestate about 1872 and Sarah Kilby Barlow died in the decade 1870/1880 in Union Township. Their widowed daughter, Elizabeth Kilby was living with them in 1870.

Found amongst my papers is this writing by Mrs. Elbert McPhaul, who states that this information comes from her personal knowledge of the family.

In 1822, a Thomas Barlow married Sarah Kilby, and bought the Abraham Kilby estate on Reddies River in 1829. We assume that the Thomas owning land in the southwestern Wilkes area was the same Thomas Barlow to move to Reddies River. It is only logical that he was related to John Barlow of Beaver Creek. Records were not well kept, but we believe that Thomas Barlow was the father of John B. Barlow who married Nancy Kilby in 1842.

Thomas Barlow was the only Barlow recorded as owning land on the Reddies River at the time. John Barlow and his brother, Linville, were raised on the north fork of the Reddies River. John Barlow enlisted in the Civil War in 1861. He died December 23, 1862, leaving Nancy Kilby with a small three year old son, Rudolphus Emanuel, to raise. Linville Barlow was burned to death in a fire that destroyed his home some years later.

This information was found in a box of research done by Ralph Emerson Barlow who is now deceased, from the late 1960's and early 1970's, therefore, I do not have information as to the whereabouts or relationship of Mrs. McPhaul to the Barlow family ...... Susan

Scattered among the pages of history you will find the name Barlow. It is definitely true that our ancestors took part in the founding of our great country. We do not have the exact date on which the Barlows came to North Carolina, nor the path they traveled to get here. We do know that a John Barlow settled in Wilkes County North Carolina sometime between 1775-1800. He received a grant of land in 1787, but we are not sure that this is his first grant. The first white man came to Wilkes Co in 1750, therefore we know that John Barlow came sometime after that year, but before his land was recorded. He and his son, John Jr., received other grants of land in the Beaver Creek and King's Creek section in 1790 and 1791.

Eliphalet Barlow also received a grant of land in 1797. From this time until now Barlows have lived in the King's Creek and Beaver Creek area of North Carolina. This is located in the southwestern part of Wilkes Co and the northwestern part of Caldwell Co.

John Barlow may have been one member of a large family or he may have been the head of a large family. This John Barlow is recorded in the book, "The Land of Wilkes" as having been a delegate to the August 28-30, 1790, meeting of the Baptist Churches forming the Yadkin Association in North Carolina. He is later listed as an active member in the association's progress as forerunner of the Baptist State.

March 2011:
My grandmother's name was Laura Oklahoma Surbaugh. She had kept in her trunk a couple of old postcards from a Monroe Barlow from NC. I have one dated 1909 with a picture of Monroe Barlow on the front of the postcard and couldn't figure out how, or if, he was any relation to my family. Thanks to your ancestry I realize that my grandmother's sister, Lillie Surbaugh married Monroe's brother, Joseph H. Barlow. Names that I've heard for years all come together now, Dancy, Coffey/Coffee, and Burke. My grandfather was born Charles Robert Burke in NC in 1888. His mother was Nancy Burke at the time he was born. His father was unknown, although my father found the name Coffey/Coffee and thought one of the Coffey/Coffee's might have been his father's father. If you have ever heard or maybe know of anyone who has heard about who my grandfather's father might have been please let me know.

The following is the lineage of Sheila Hudson Purdum, who believes that this is the Thomas that makes her family a part of this Bunches of Barlows, though it has not been proven.

She notes: In 1870, Thomas and Laurah are living in Union, Wilkes Co North Carolina, and living with them is a Selena B. Kilby, age 18, shown to be domestic help. She may be the daughter of Thomas aunt, Elizabeth Kilby, shown as Selena S. in other records. Selena's father had died in 1859, and Elizabeth was living in the home of her parents.

1. Death certificate and obituary states that the birth date of Charles was August 18, 1906 and he was 52 and 53 years old. Application for Social Security Card which was filled out by Charles himself states that he was born August 18, 1899 which leads me to believe that it is the correct date.
2. It is believed that the dates were stated by Hannah Hudson wrongly because of Social Security benefits and disability benefits.
3. It is also stated on death certificate that Charles was born in Macks Meadows, Virginia, application for Social Security Card filled out by himself states that he was born in Max Meadows, West Virginia. It is also known that at one time West Virginia and Virginia were one place and then divided so this could be the reason for this discrepancy.

Queenie had a boarding house in North Carolina, the income on which she raised her 3 boys after her first husband died.
From my talks with James Hudson, I have gotten the impression that Queenie was a very special person to him and to others, that she seemed to be a very caring and giving person, that she was a hard worker and raised her children all by herself for a long time with no one to help her and did a very good job of it.

Tom had lived for several years in Los Angeles California where he had shipped out on sea going vessels. Prior to his maritime duty, he had been a chauffeur to someone in that area. He discovered that he had TB while in California. I believe he returned to North Carolina where he died at 26 years, 10 months of age.
