He married 1.) JANE BURCH on 22 December 1818 in Wilkes Co North Carolina, daughter of THOMAS BURCH and SARAH JONES. Jane died between 1819 and 1827.
He married 2.) LYDIA WINKLER, about 1827, daughter of MATTHIAS WINKLER and CATHERINE ARNEY.

He married 2) ELIZABETH GERMAN, daughter of JAMES GERMAN, cousin of MARY ANN GERMAN after October 1860. She was born 14 August 1840 and died 27 August 1914.

Rufus Barlow left a will dated 19 July 1862, shortly after his second marriage, naming his mother, Lydia Barlow, his wife, Elizabeth, his two sons, and Jane Barlow, daughter of John Oliver Cromwell Barlow, Rufus' half-brother, whom Rufus reared after his mother's death, although her father soon remarried.

Imprisoned first at Point Lookout Maryland
Transferred to Elmira New York where he died of pneumonia on 31 January 31, 1865 Buried in Grave no. 1787 at Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira New York. Regiment was first organized for 12 months as 8th NC Infantry Volunteers at Camp Wyatt, Wilmington, NC 20 July 1861, redesignated as 18th NC Infantry 14 Nov 1861.

A gr-gr grandson of Rufus Barlow, Sidney Barlow of Hudson North Carolina, is in possession of several letters which Rufus wrote to his wife Elizabeth while in the army. One of the letter reads as follows:

October 28, 1862

Dear Mouther,

I oftimes think of you in your old age and how Bad I want to Be with you to take ceare of you after dewing so much for me.

I want you to pray for me for yourself and let us try to meet in heaven if we don't on earth. Elizabeth, God love you all to pray for me while I am so fare from you don't forget it if I Never see you no more on earth I want to meet you in heaven. Tel mouther that I saw cousin Thomas Winkler the other day and he was well but he did not know anything of his brother. Write soon direct your letters to Richmond at Co B 18 Regiment NC T 4 Brigade

3.	THOMAS W.5 BARLOW (William4, John3, John2, Thomas1) was born c1830 and died before 1867, possibly in the Civil War. He married SAPHRONIA TURNER on 12 September 1857 in Wilkes Co North Carolina, daughter of HARRISON TURNER and SUSAN ALLEN. On 15 July 1867, Sophronia married THOMAS LARKIN MALTBA

4.	THOMAS MARCUS6 BARLOW (John5, William4, John3, John2, Thomas1) was born 23 December 1844 and died 30 January 1915. He married MARY JANE BENTLEY. She was born 06 November 1844 and died 24 February 1903. Both are buried in Lower Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

vi.	EDWARD BARLOW born about 1879. He married FLORENCE REICHARD

WILLIAM L.6 BARLOW (John5, William4, John3, John2, Thomas1) was born 17 January 1846 and died 09 December 1925.

He married SARAH MARIA BROWN on 05 January 1868. She was born 07 March 1840, the daughter of WYATT and HOLLIE BEACH BROWN. She died 14 June 1880, and both are buried at Kings Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

7.	NANCY LOUISA6 BARLOW (John5, William4, John3, John2, Thomas1) was born 19 May 1857 and died 01 March 1937. She married JOHN WILLIAM POPE. He was the son of SAMUEL K. and CAROLINE ELIZABETH REED POPE. He was born 04 April 1866 and died 23 October 1936.
