The Barlow Dude Ranch was located on the Conejos River, not far
from Antonito, Colorado.
William H. Barlow, a merchant in Antonito, purchased
the ranch in 1920 from "Old Bill" Cornett. William's
son R.
E. (Ed) Barlow, soon took over management of the ranch.
Ed Barlow married Lucille Louden of Monte Vista, Colorado
in May of 1921. Lucille became the bookkeeper, she also helped
Mrs. Barlow, aka "Mother
Barlow" who was the cook.
Mother Barlow was related by marriage to Heavy-weight Champion
William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey. Her brother Ben Reidel,
married one of Dempsey's sisters.
After William died (late 1930's or early 1940's) Ed, Lucille and
Mother Barlow moved to Farmington, New Mexico (51 miles south of
Durango, Colorado) The ranch was sold in 1945.
