My elusive Lydia BARLOW (b. abt. 1784) and husband Ransom ODELL (b. abt 1780) named a son "Nelson" and the name was carried down every generation as far as my generation either in the form "Nellie" or "Nelson." It must have been a family name to have been so important. I figure the name was a BARLOW name since I haven't found any "Nellies" or "Nelsons" among any other ODELL lines other than this one. I don't know precisely where my Lydia and Ransom were born. The census gives New Hampshire as Lydia's birthplace and New York for Ransom. I think Ransom was probably born either in the Oblong area that was disputed by Connecticut and New York (area east of the Hudson River) or else up around the Glens Falls-Lake George area near the Vermont border. In the time period of Lydia's birth the area that became Vermont was being claimed by New York and New Hampshire so when she said she was born in New Hampshire, it might not be the New Hampshire we think of today. I know I'm grasping at straws, but these folks have stumped researchers for many years. They didn't leave a paper trail. Lydia and Ransom had several children born in New York in the 1805-1814 time period before moving to Scioto Co Ohio where the first "Nelson" - my gg grandfather - was born in 1818. The names of those New York - born children include some very common BARLOW given names - Thomas (the eldest child) and Moses (the 2nd son). There was also Mary, Melinda, Chauncey, Benajah (an Odell name), and James. |

I am trying to find clues as to who this Nathan BARLOW is. I went back into the Barlow archives and saw a number of posts from 1998 on for men of this name, but I couldn't be sure that they were the same as the one I'm after. As I was looking for information on Joseph MILLER and his wife Lydia STOWE, from families living in Middletown Connecticut and ending up in Granville Massachusetts but somehow living in Lee Center, New York on the way, I found the web page for Lee, Oneida Co New York, which had a nice little history of the town. This stood out: "Also in 1790 came Deacon Nathan BARLOW and his wife and her sons, Smith, Eliakim, Dan and Luther MILLER." Further down the page: "Some early members of this church were Deacon Nathan BARLOW and his wife Lydia." What intrigues here is that the family I'm trying to trace, Joseph Miller and Lydia Stowe, had the following sons: Joseph (b. 1755), Jesse (b.1757), SMITH (b.1763), ELIAKIM (b.1764), DAN (b.1770), and LUTHER (b. 1771) These are not usual names, and it just doesn't seem possible that the article about Lee New York, isn't referring to this family. Nowhere, however, can I find any indication of a Deacon Nathan BARLOW who married a widow Lydia (Stowe) MILLER. Is this a red herring, or is it a nice little clue that never came out before? I'd be most interested in corresponding with anyone working on a Nathan BARLOW who may have been born in Middletown, Connecticut, where Joseph Miller and his wife came from (and are well documented in the Barbour Collection). |

I have just returned from a visit to Lee Center and other points in Oneida Co New York. Nathan Barlow was born on 26 Mar 1726 in Suffield, Connecticut, the son of James Barlow and Martha Gates. The James Barlow family moved from Suffield to Granville, Massachusetts prior to 1746, where they became one of the founding families of Granville. Nathan's first two wives, Martha Gates, and Margaret Purchase died after bearing him a total of 8 children. Nathan then married the widow Lydia Stow (her husband Joseph died 31 Jan 1785 in Granville) after Margaret's death in Oct, 1791 in Granville. Nathan died 17 Jan 1812 in Lee and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, in the town of Lee. Lydia died 26 March 1825, aged 92 and is buried next to Nathan in Evergreen Cemetery. Nathans stone, although broken is very legible while Lydia's stone is nearly illegible. ...Mary is no longer pursuing the Barlow lineage... |

Here is what I believe to be my Barlow line; I would like to connect with other researchers working on any of these people:

Does anyone have information on Jessie BARLOW GOOD, daughter of Blanche Elizabeth FARMER CURTIS BARLOW (1840-1904) and Augustus Charles BARLOW (1818-1884)? Augustus Charles Barlow was the son of Aaron Morehouse Barlow. She was a cousin of mine and I would very much like to get in touch with her descendants. |

I am looking for the parents of Susan Barlow that married 08 February 1816 James Grinnell Redfield, born 1792 Weston, Connecticut, died 1872 Delhi, Deleware Co New York. Was her father a Joseph Barlow? |

I am still hunting the parents of Frederick P. Barlow. I believe that he was the grandson of the Revolutionary War soldier John Barlow of Kent, Connecticut. His father could be John Barlow, or Elisha Barlow, or Heman Barlow, or Julius Caswell Barlow. I pick Frederick up in Portage Co, Ohio, married Sally Derthick on 26 Feb 1845. Also in or passing through Portage Co in the same time frame was Julius, Heman, Fanny, Joseph W., William, Alfred H., and Horace Barlow. I have a record of a Frederick Barlow, who was admitted to the Baptist Church in Wyoming Co NY, in 1842, on a letter from New Milford, Connecticut. |

My line to James Barlow of
Suffield, Connecticut is as follows: I have spent most of my time investigating the descendants of Benjamin Barlow. I have compiled, with the help of many people, a good amount of information on the ten children of Benjamin Barlow, the ten children of Benjamin Barlow Jr., and from there, my descent from Benjamin D. Barlow. Major interests I have include learning more about Ebenezer Barlow (lineage Nathan, James Jr.) and his son, Ebenezer Rolin Barlow. We know Ebenezer settled in Oneida County New York but vital statistics are almost non existant and we don't know who Ebenezer married. Ebenezer Rolin Barlow is equally mysterious. I would like to know more about Ebenezer and Ebenezer Rolin Barlow. There are several good researchers out there on the descendants of James Barlow and perhaps they, and myself, will be able to add more details to the whole story. Also seeking information on Luther B. Barlow, who is the son of my great-great grandfather, Benjamin D. Barlow, and the brother of my great grandfather, Truman Priestly Barlow. Luther was born in 1836, probably in Orleans or Monroe County, New York. The last trace I find of Luther is in the 1850 census of Albion, Orleans County, New York where he is recorded, at age 14, living with his grandparents Steven and Dorcas (Clark) Wilcox. Edson Barlow, in his search of the Civil War Records, has found no record of Luther serving in the Civil War. I have searched all of the census indexes for 1860 and 1870 that are in our library in Madison, Wisconsin and find no listing for him. Truman Priestly Barlow, who went to Michigan around 1865, never mentioned Luther to his family that I know of. If anyone has information about Luther B. Barlow or his descendants, I would appreciate hearing from them. |
