I am searching for the ancestry of Joseph BARLOW who was born ca 1790 in the Manchester area, Lancashire, England  [see his line on pages 166-168].  He married Alice HIGHAM on 22 March, 1808, in Manchester.  He came
to the United States about 1811.  Any help would be appreciated.  Did they come with family or friends?
Margaret S. Gallup, 2081 Sharon Court South, Estes Park, CO 80517-7145

                           --------------------

As previously mentioned on page 166, a Susan BARLOW, age 60 and born in Kentucky, was recorded living with
Joseph BARLOW at Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky, in the 1850 census.  A young man, Hamilton BARLOW,
age 18 and born in Kentucky, was included in the household.  No record of this marriage, the birth of Hamilton or
the death of Alice (Higham) BARLOW has yet been found and Barlow of Barlow would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any information.

I am interested in hearing from anyone who has information on Richard BARLOW of Monticello, Wisconsin, and
his descendents (see his line on page 169).
Townsend Barlow, 235 Glen Avenue, Apt. 2-B, Grayslake IL 60030

                           --------------------

I am seeking information on Hannah BARLOW.  She married Nathan MABEN and they were recorded at Cochecton Township, Sullivan County, New York, in the 1865 state census. It is believed that this was Hannah's third marriage and that BARLOW was the surname of her first husband.  She was 56 in 1865, hence born in 1809, and she was born
in Greene County, New York. Nathan MABEN was 55 and was also born in Greene County.  Also in the 1865 house- hold were Hannah BARLOW, age 19, born in Columbia County, New York, and Nathan C. MABEN, age 17, also born
in Columbia County.  Can anyone provide Hannah's maiden surname and the given name of her BARLOW husband?
John D. Mellon, 5036 Dumont Place, Woodland Hills, California 91364

                           --------------------

I am interested in the BARLOWS of Ulster and Sullivan Counties, New York, and of Connecticut.

Edwin Barlow of Genesee County, Mich.

Yet another immigrant from Manchester, England, in the mid-nineteenth century was Edwin BARLOW.

Family records say that he and his family left their Manchester home in 1848 and embarked at Liverpool on a sailing vessel for America.   Arriving after 15 weeks at sea, they made their way to Flushing, Michigan, where already an English settlement had been formed.

First Generation

1. Edwin BARLOW  was born in 1817 in county Lancaster, England, probably at Manchester, and was a son of James
BARLOW, a blacking maker of Manchester.  He and his family came to the United States in 1848 and settled at
Flushing, Genesee County, Michigan, where he was recorded as a laborer in the 1850 census.  He died on February
26, 1893, at the age of 76 at Flushing and he was buried there in the Flushing Cemetary.

Edwin BARLOW married his first wife Harriet Bacon MATLEY on April 30, 1839, in the Manchester Cathedral at Manchester.  She was born in 1821 in England and was a daughter of Jonathan MATLEY, a green grocer. Edwin and Harriet BARLOW, and their sons James and John, were recorded living at Jenkinson Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester, England, in the 1841 census.

Apparently Edwin and Harriet separated in the 1850's and they probably soon divorced. She was recorded as Hannah MATLEY and living with her children at Flushing in the 1860 census.

Edwin and Harriet BARLOW's children were:

     2.   i. James BARLOW was born on March 12, 1840, in England.

     3.   ii. John M. BARLOW was born in 1841 in England.

     4.   iii. Edwin BARLOW  was born at Hulme, Manchester,  England, and was baptized on
October 16, 1842, in the Manchester Cathedral.

     5.   iv. Alfred  BARLOW  was born on  March  22, 1844, at  Hulme, Manchester, England.
He was baptized on July 14, 1844, in the Manchester Cathedral.

          v.  Maria  BARLOW  was born on March 31, 1847, at Hulme, Manchester, England.
She was baptized on May 9, 1847, in the Manchester Cathedral.
She was recorded as Emeline BARLOW, age 1 and born in Michigan, in the 1850
               census.
In the 1860 census she was recorded as Mary BARLOW, age 10 and  born in
Michigan, and living with her brothers and  Hannah MATLEY at Flushing.
It is believed that she married A. BURBONNAIS of Hickory, North Carolina.

vi.  Frederick A. BARLOW  was born in 1849 probably at Flushing, Michigan.
He died on January 18, 1856, at age 7 at Flushing and was buried there in the
               Flushing Cemetary.

vii.  Sybella (Belle) BARLOW  was born in 1853 probably at Flushing,  Michigan.
She married Vincent SMITH of Mikado, Alcona County, Michigan.

.....page 173.....

Edwin Barlow of Genesee County, Michigan (continued)

Edwin BARLOW married second Elizabeth WAY on March 10, 1867, at Montrose, Genesee County, Michigan.
They were married by Justice of the Peace E. V. Smith.  Edwin was listed as age 57 and a resident of Flushing and Elizabeth was listed as age 41 and a resident of Montrose on the marriage documents.  They had no children.

Second Generation

2.  James BARLOW  was born on  March 12, 1840, at Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, England.  He was recorded
living at Flushing, Michigan, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. He died at his home, Riverside Farm, at Oscoda, Iosco County, Michigan, on Thursday evening, November 23, 1916, at age 76 and was buried in the Oscoda Cemetary.

James BARLOW married Sarah G. HOLESTER on May 9, 1870, at Au Sable, Iosco County, Michigan.

iii.  Estella BARLOW married first Thomas E. HOLMES  and second Warren RANDALL.

iv.  Hubert James BARLOW married Axie ----.

          v.  Thomas Elmer BARLOW married Rhoda ----.

James BARLOW married second Josephine (Josie) Cotrell PURDY on February 14, 1880, at Oscoda, Iosco County, Michigan.  She was born about 1861.  She died on April 16, 1939, at age 78 at Mount Vernon, Knox County, Ohio.

4. Edwin BARLOW  was born at Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England, and was baptized on October 16, 1842, in the Manchester Cathedral.  He was recorded at Flushing, Michigan, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.  He enlisted in the Civil War on July 31, 1861, at age 18, at Flint, Michigan, for 3 years service in Company C of the 16th Michigan Infantry Regiment, "Stockton's Independent Regiment," which was organized in July 1861 at Detroit, Michigan.  He was wounded at Gaine's Mills, Virginia, on June 27, 1862, and was discharged on November 13, 1862, for disability at Warrenton, Virginia.  He filed pension application no. 8401 on January 22, 1863, and received certificate no. 10800.

Edwin BARLOW married Julia EADIES on July 20, 1866, in Genesee County, Michigan.

Their child was:

          i.  John H. BARLOW was born on May 20, 1868, in Genesee County, Michigan.

Edwin BARLOW may have married second Jane ----.  Their child was:

ii. Arthur BARLOW  was born on August 2, 1875, in  Genesee County, Michigan.

5. Alfred BARLOW was born on March 22, 1844, at Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire, England.  He was baptized on July 14, 1844, in the Manchester Cathedral.  He was recorded at Flushing, Michigan, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.  He enlisted at age 19 in the Civil War on October 18, 1861, at Detroit, Michigan, in Company C of the 14th Michigan Infantry Regiment and was mustered in on January 7, 1862.  He was wounded and lost an arm in battle at Jonesboro, Georgia, around September 1, 1864.  He was discharged at Fayetteville, North Carolina, on March 14, 1865.  He filed pension application no. 77392 on July 13, 1865, and he received certificate no. 53222.  He died and his widow Eleanor F. Alfred BARLOW married Eleanor F. WAY on January 16, 1881, in Genesee County, Michigan.  She was born in 1862

Barlows from Grouse Creek, Utah
I was searching for sites which had "Grouse Creek" in them and ran across your site.  Very impressive.

I am a descendant of Amanda Barlow.  You may want to correct the following entries:

Miscellaneous Western Marriages

Alice Ann BARLOW m Delbert John CONGER (or HART), Nov 29 1892, Grouse Creek UT
Amanda BARLOW m Calison TANNER, Oct 15 1889, Grouse Creek UT.

Alice probably married a Hart.  The Hart name is from Grouse Creek where I am not familiar with any Congers.

Amanda married Valison Tanner Sr.  They are my great-grandparents.
