JOHN OF CALDWELL CO NORTH CAROLINA

  John Barlow, an early  pioneer of  Caldwell County,  first  owned  land  and settled in Kings Creek  (then Wilkes
  County).  The earliest land grant recorded for him was in 1789.   Little else is known about John Barlow, except
  that many of his descendants live in Caldwell Co.  He may have been the John Barlow who served so many chur-
  ches in Wilkes and Caldwell  as pastor.

  From John  Barlow's will  of 1855 and other sources, most of  the children of his rather large family can be iden-
  tified.

  Polly, probably  John Barlow's oldest daughter, married  Meredith Walker, and  died before 1855.  
  Her children were Sarah, who married _____ Maltaba,  Emily and Arminda.

  Elizabeth, who married  Martin Livingston,  was the mother of Tom Livingston and several other children.

  Nancy, who married Thomas  Coffey, son of James and Delilah Ferguson Coffey, was the mother of Nancy, who
  married David Ernest 17 October 1858.

  Thomas who married Amanda Sherrill, 21 January 1861,

  John, Rufus, and Larkin.

  Thomas and Amanda Sherill Coffey were the parents of Sarah Coffey and  Smith Coffey.  
  Thomas died before 1871 and Amanda Sherrill Coffey remarried to Noah Keller,  22 March 1871.

  Joseph  Barlow was probably the oldest sonof John Barlow.  He married Louisa Laxton.  
  Joseph and Louisa Laxton Barlow had 10 children.  
  Calvin Barlow, their oldest  son, married Meritta  Bentley,  04  March 1854  and  moved to  Watauga Co  NC.
  Their daughter, Mary Demorious, married Milas Keller, 31 December 1874.  
  After Meritta died, Calvin married Mary Tilley, the daughter of Hosia and Nancy Tilley.

  Pickins Barlow  (04 April 1838 - 05 June 1924), married Sarah Laxton, 03 February 1871.   
  Sarah was the daughter of Allen and Polly Powell Laxton.  Their children were Walter, Minnie and Maud.

  Pickins Barlow  served in Co A, 22nd  Regiment CSA and  was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsyl-
  vania.   After the war, he was one of the men who  freed this territory  from the terror of the mauraders of  Fort
  Hamby.

  The other eight  children of  Joseph and  Louisa Laxton Barlow  were, Joel,  who married Mary Hartley,  21 July
  1876,  Julia  (18 July 1853 - 17 April 1940),   who  married  Alva  Barlow;  Jane  who married Thomas Knight, 
  Levi, who married Etta Kirby,  Elvira, who married Lewis Holder,  Caroline,  who  married  Milton Sherrill,  28
  June 1862,   Maryanne, who married W. Lute Coffey 05 March 1874, and Albert, who died young.

  Larkin  Barlow, sonof John Barlow married Edith Knight and after her death, he married Nancy E. Humphrey,
  07  February 1865.   His children were Edith S., John L., Sarah E., Samuel T., and Thomas W.

  John Barlow had five other sons:
  Eliphalet  Barlow, Henry Barlow, a school teacher, who married Matilda Kirby and moved to Watauga Co NC.

  Braxton Barlow who married Charlotte Carlton and lived in Wilkes Co.

  Parrish Barlow who married Mary Land,

  and

  William R. Barlow.

  The children of  Parrish and  Mary Land Barlow were  Horton Barlow  who  married  Nancy Maltba,  Hamilton
  Barlow who married Cynthia Ferguson, Charlotte, Julia, Dycy, Emily, and Millie who never married and became
  a schooteacher.

  William R. Barlow ,  the  youngest son of  John Barlow,  married  Jane Burch,  22 December 1818.   Their  son
  was John  O.  Cromwell  Barlow.    Jane died  before 1828 and William R. Barlow remarried  to  Lydia Winkler,
  daughter of Mathias and Catherine Arney Winkler.

  Their  children where Thomas,  who  married  Saphronia Turner, 12 September 1857  and  William Rufus who
  married  1.) Mary Ann German 3 February 1859 and 2.)  Elizabeth German

  William Rufus Barlow  was born Oct 13, 1827,  the son of  William Barlow  and his second wife Lydia Winkler
  Rufus married first  Mary Anne German, daughrer of Wilburn German and they had one son, Marshall.   After
  Mary Anne's death, Rufus married Elizabeth German, daughter of James German and had one son, Sidney.

  Rufus enlisted  in the civil war in Iredel Co on August 20 1862.   He was assigned to Company "B" of  the 18th
  Regiment of  the  NC Volunteer Infantry Army of  Northern Virginia CSA,  as a private.   He was present  and
  accounted  for  until  captured at  Spotsylvania  Courthouse, Virginia  on  May 12, 1864.   He was  imprisioned
  first at Point Lookout,  Maryland, and later transported  to Elmira  NY  where  he  died of  pneumonia, while  a
  prisoner of war on 31 January 1865.

  A  gr-gr grandsonof Rufus Barlow is in possession of several letters which Rufus wrote to his wife Elizabeth while
  in the army

  One of the letter reads as follows:
 

  October 28 1862

  Dear Mouther,

  I oftimes think of you in  your old age and how Bad I want to Be with you to take ceare of
  you after dewing so much for me.

  I  want  you to  pray for me for yourself  and  let us  try to  meet  in heaven if  we don't on
  earth.   Elizabeth,  God  love  you  all  to pray  for  me  while I am so fare  from  you don't
  forget it  if I Never see you no more on earth I want to meet  you  in  heaven.  
  
  Tel mouther  that  I saw  cousin Thomas Winkle r the  other  day and  he was  well but  he
  did not know anything of his brother.
