Gold!
One day while he was
plowing, Francis N. Barlow discovered what appeared to be gold
embedded in the rocks
that his plow brought to the surface
of his field. Some of the rocks were taken to be assayed and it was
truly gold.
Unfortunately, the amount
of gold was small and was deeply embedded in rock. It required
considerable effort
to extract and after a number of
attempts to realize a profit, the mine was given up as a losing proposition.
The gold is probably still there,
although any mining attempts would be extremely difficult now.
In the 1930's,
the entire area, consisting
of the towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich and Prescott,
was purchased by the state
and flooded to create the Quabbin
Reservoir to supply Boston with water.
Francis N. Barlow was born
in 1854, probably at Ware, Massachusetts, and was a son of
Henry White Barlow
and Emeline Crucy Hill.
He was a farmer at Greenwich, in central Massachusetts,
where he spent most of his
life. He died on
August 14, 1912, at Greenwich & was initially buried
in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Enfield,
Massachusetts. Along
with many others, Francis Barlow's gravesite at
Enfield was moved to a newly created
cemetery, Quabbin Park Cemetery,
when the reservoir was built.
More
Barlow Gold
Otis P. Barlow was another
New Englander who caught the gold fever.
He was born on April 22, 1837, at
Woodstock, Connecticut, and
was a son of Reuben Barlow and Dorcas Converse. While still
a very young man
he went to California for gold.
He not only found gold but managed to resist the many temptations
to spend it
in California. He started
his journey home by sailing from San Francisco to the Isthmus of Panama.
There he
took a mule train across to
the Atlantic side where he boarded the steamer Central America for
the final leg of
the journey.
This was the quickest,
most comfortable and most popular way to travel between the
two coasts of the United
States. A first class cabin
cost $300, second class cabin $250, steerage
$150, and the trip took about three
and one half weeks.

More on John Barlow of Fairfield
CT
Jean McNamara of Fairplay,
Colorado, has sent a stack of material on John Barlow
that she received from an
English researcher Liz Carter.
Much of this miscellanea is contained elsewhere in this issue of Barlow
of Barlow.
Of particular interest here is the
correspondence between Miss Carter and two representatives
of The College
of Arms regarding the supposed right
of the immigrant John Barlow of Fairfield, Connecticut,
to the Slebetch
arms.
It has long been a family legend
that Joel Barlow, a descendent of John Barlow, applied for
& obtained the right
to the arms of the Slebetch/Slebech
branch of the Barlow family during one of his many visits to England
in the
latter years of the
eighteenth century. This right was based on Joel's
descent, and hence John's descent, from
Roger Barlow, the founder of the
Slebetch branch. Roger Barlow was granted the Slebetch arms in 1559.
(The
Barlow arms of the Slebetch branch
are carried on the right in the masthead of this newsletter.)
Joel Barlow's right to the Slebetch
arms was published in Matthews' American Armoury and Blue Book by
John
Matthews at London in 1908.
It is supposed that John Matthews would have obtained
his information from
the College of Arms, but
this correspondence seems to indicate that he relied only on information
supplied by
the family from the family tradition.
In his letter of July 14, 1993,
to Miss Carter, P. Ll. Gwynn-Jones, M.A., the Lancaster Herald
of The College
of Arms, wrote "There
is nothing in the Records of the College of Arms to
support the proposition that Joel
Barlow sought and obtained
the right to use Arms which were identical with or similar
to the Arms of the Sle-
betch Barlows, or any other Arms.
Nor does Joel appear on any pedigree, an inclusion which might have
assist-
ed the shedding of light onto
this question."
Mr. Gwynn-Jones goes on:
"A Barlow who is thought to be his ancestor,
William Barlow of Chichester, does
appear in the Records, accompanied
by the name of his father and names and details
of the Bishop's brother
(Roger of Slebech); Roger's
descendants; the Bishop's wife and one of her daughters by the Bishop."
In a sense, this places the researchers
of John Barlow's ancestry back to "square one." The bright
side of all this
is that it is probably good to get
rid of all the misinformation so that we can deal strictly
with facts. It may very
well be that John Barlow was a descendent
of the Slebetch branch and it may be that Joel
informally obtained
information about his ancestry
while in England, but we are confronted with the need for better
proof than we
now have.
Barlow Gold (continued
from page 179)
But this trip turned out differently.
Two days out of Havana, on September 10, 1857, the Central America was
struck by a hurricane and sank off
the coast of South Carolina. Otis Barlow & 422 other
men perished, many
as they tried to save their
gold. It has been estimated that the Central America carried
three tons of California
gold and it has only been as recent
as 1989 that any salvage efforts have been successful.

Illinois
Public Land Sales
Transaction data for the
original public land sales in Illinois from
the Illinois Secretary of State and State
Archive is presented below.
The data includes the buyer's name, the sale date, the amount
of land in acres, the
location of the parcel
and the section number, the township location
and meridian (M) used, and the county
where the township and parcel
were located.
The location of the parcel
is abbreviated and the abbreviations used can probably be best explained
by example:
N, E, S, W, NE, SE, SW and NW
are compass direction (north, east, etc.). A section
is 640 acres and there
are 36 sections in a six-mile square
township. Parcels less than a whole section were
usually divided by quarter
sections (160 acres) and quarter
of quarter sections (40 acres). NENW would
indicate the northeast quarter
of the northwest quarter of
the section. N2NE would indicate the northerm half of the northeast
quarter of the
section.
Sometimes odd size parcels
were designated as numbered lots. A more
complete explanation is contained in
the Township Atlas of the United
States by John L. Andriot, which is available at most libraries.

The latest issue (March-April 1995)
of Everton's Genealogical Helper contains an excellent
article on family
newsletters by Lou Pero. Mr.
Pero makes a number of points in his article, and I would like to
quote several of
these:
"If you take a family newsletter
for one year & then drop it because you didn't see your
family in it, it's probably
because you didn't send it in, and
you will have missed the point of the family newsletter."
"The real heart of this
type of newslette r [the surname newsletter like ours] is the
query, and most want good
queries,more that the usual barebones
'named, date, place' query."
"To me, the best help
I have received from a family newsletter is
the exchange of ideas. The story of
one
person's successful research may
contain some creative strategies that will make a difference in another
person's
research."

A note about missing issues ....
Barlow of Barlow is published
quarterly and issues are scheduled for February, May, August
and November. I
try to complete each issue by the
first of the publication month and get it in the mail by the middle of
the month.
So far I have had very few delivery
problems, but there have been some. We have a
good postal system in this
country in spite of all the griping
that we are all inclined to do about it. If
for any reason you do not receive an
issue by the end of the scheduled
publication month, please let me know so that a replacement
can be promptly
sent to you.
.....page 193.....
The Internet
As many of you undoubtedly know,
the Internet, the so-called information superhighway, is a wonderful
tool for
genealogists. The Illinois
Public Land Sales Records on page 181 of this issue were
extracted from a database
available from the University of
Illinois at Chicago on the Internet. And there is more.
The Kentucky Vital Records are available
on a very large database provided by the University of
Kentucky and
include death records
from 1911 to 1992, marriage records from 1973 to 1993,
and divorce records from
1973 to 1993.
Card catalogs from the major libraries of
the world are available, including the Library
of
Congress, the New
York Public Library and the libraries of many universities.
And the information that is
available keeps expanding on an
almost daily basis.
Another valuable resource of the
Internet is electronic mail or E-mail and, again, genealogists are catching
on to
this new means of communication.
E-mail combines the better qualities of the
letter with the speed of the
telephone. Thoughts
can be carefully chosen, data can be included and the
recipient has a permanent paper
copy of a message that took, at
most, minutes to transmit.
Barlow of Barlow may be
contacted at barlowpa@metronet.lib.mi.us and I
hope that this may prove to be a
convenience for our readers.
