The Barlow's of Fairfield Vermont

Dimon Barlow married Susanna Seeley December 28, 1790, New Fairfield, Connecticut [CH].   She was the daughter of Abel and Betty 'Briggs' Seeley, born on May 20, 1766, at New Fairfield, Connecticut and died on December 04, 1841, at Fairfield, Vermont [VV]   She is buried there in the Bradley Cemetery.

Betsey Barlow, Jo-260, was born on March 29, 1792, at Fairfield, Vermont [VV].   She died on January 09, 1875.

She married a Mr. Spencer and they lived in Salisbury, Vermont and Brocton, Chatauqua Co New York.

Aurelia Barlow, Jo-264, was born on February 18, 1796, at Fairfield, Vermont [VV].  She died on October 05, or 08, 1874.

She married Joseph Weeks on January 13, 1819.

Susan Barlow, Jo-265, was born on June 23, 1802 at Fairfield, Vermont [VV].   She died October 13, 1880, and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery at St. Albans, Vermont.

She married Hiram Bellows on June 05, 1832, at Fairfield, Vermont [VV].

Abel S. Barlow, Jo-504, was born on March 02, 1805 or 1806, at Fairfield, Vermont.  He was a residence of Natchez, Adams Co Mississippi, where he was recorded in the 1830 census.  He died on February 09, 1832, at Natchez of 'mania' according to his death notice in a Natchez newspaper.[SR]

Charlotte Barlow, Jo-266, was born on February 25, 1812, at Fairfield, Vermont [VV].  She died on July 26, 1885, and was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery at St. Albans, Vermont.

She married Victor Atwood on January 16, 1842, at St. Albans [VV] and their children were Charles Atwood, and Barlow Atwood.  Victor Atwood was the son of Levi and Lucretia 'Waterman' Atwood, born on May 31, 1807, at Cambridge, Vermont. He was a merchant and they settled at St. Albans.

On March 13, 1791, Hubbard Barlow, Justice of the Peace, issued a notice for a Fairfield, Vermont, town meeting which was held on March 30, 1791. 

According to Gilbert Harry Doane:  "Hubbard, a surveyor, was especially prominent as a town officer and speculator in real estate at Fairfield and Smithfield.  Hubbard surveyed Fairfield and was appointed to the committee to layout the roads on February 13, 1787.   The inventory of his holdings at the time of his premature death in 1804 fills many pages of the records in the Probate Court at St. Albans.   Many of the early land records of the town testify to his holdings and numerous deals in real estate.   As he died without children - his holdings passed to his widow and brothers.   Hubbard Barlow built the house owned by S. Allen Soule."

Hubbard Barlow married Mary 'Polly' Hubbell on January 10, 1788, in New Fairfield, Connecticut [CH]  She was the daughter of Eleazer and Anna 'Noble' Hubbell, born on June 12, 1770, probably at Newtown, Connecticut. 

After Hubbard's death, she married second Bushnell Bostwick Downs of St. Albans, Vermont on August 25, 1804.   She married third Colonel Joshua Danforth of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on February 11, 1823.  She died on July 04, 1850, at Shelby, Orleans County, New York.

The only child born to Hubbard and Mary Barlow was:

Ebenezer Barlow married Orissa B. Wilmarth about 1797, probably at Fairfield, Connecticut.  She was born about 1779, probably in Connecticut

Orissa married second Andrew Bradley who was born on January 13, 1754.  He was the son of Gershom and Jane 'Dimon' Bradley of Fairfield, Connecticut. She died September 17, 1855, at St. Albans [VV] and was buried there in the Greenwood Cemetery.

The children of Ebenezer and Orissa were:

Orissa Barlow, Jo-268, was born on May 20, 1803, at Fairfield, Vermont.  She died March 24, 1825, at Fairfield, and was buried there in the Barlow Cemetery [GR].

She married Dr. Thomas Chamberlain and their child was Orissa Chamberlain.

David Barlow, Jo-269, was born on July 11, 1805, at Fairfield, Vermont. He died in October, 1837, at Harrisburg, Texas, and his body was brought back for burial in the Greenwood Cemetery at St. Albans, Vermont [VV].   His burial records give him as Major David Barlow so apparently he was in the military. 
He did not marry.

Sarah J. Barlow,Jo-270, was born on May 20, 1803, at Fairfield, Vermont.   She died September 05, 1868, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery St. Albans, Vermont.

Eloisa Barlow, Jo-272, was born on July 06, 1809, at Fairfield, Vermont.   She died on July 12, 1876

According to Gilbert Harry Doane, "The original Bradley Barlow place is the stone house on Black Creek, now known as Tierney Farm."

Bradley Barlow lived at Pawling, Dutchess County, New York before going to Vermont with his brothers. He ran a store there and he was recorded as leaving the Pawling Company of New York State Militia in 1796.

Bradley Barlow married Deborah Sherman, probably at Pawling, New York.  She was the daughter of Benjamin and Deborah 'Delano' Sherman.   She was born on March 13, 1776, at Pawling and and died on April 10, 1857, at Fairfield, Vermont [VV], and was buried there in the Bradley Cemetery.

Benjamin Sherman, of Pawling NY, will June 07, 1804, recorded November 29, 1805, daughter Deborah, wife of Bradley Barlow.

Deborah Sherman Barlow, Jo-274, was born on June 24, 1805, at Fairfield, Vermont.  She died on April 08, 1868, at Highgate, Vermont, and was buried there in the Highgate Falls Cemetery.

She married Stephen Shelden Keyes on May 25, 1829, at Manchester, Vermont, and their child was Laura Keyes.  Stephen Keyes was the son of Stephen G. and Elizabeth 'Hyde' Keyes.

Laura Barlow, Jo-276, was born in 1809, probably at Fairfield, Vermont.   She died in 1875.

David Barlow married first Hannah Patchen on August 16, 1789, at the Fairfield Church [FF].   She was a daughter of George and Elizabeth 'Williams' Patchen.  She died around 1798-1800, probably at Fairfield.

David Barlow married second Lydia Morse. She was a daughter of Daniel and Rebecca 'Munson' Morse, born in 1783 in Connecticut [C1850-60] 
She was admitted to and baptized as an adult in the Congregational Church at Fairfield, Vermont, on April 27, 1823.

She was recorded living with her son Sidney at Burlington, Vermont, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

She died on October 13, 1871, at age 89, and is buried in Bradley Cemetery, beside her husband.

Eunice Barlow, Jo-615, was born on October 23, 1790.

She married Joseph Lockwood on July 18, 1808, at the Greenfield Hill Church.   He was born on July 18, 1783. She died on April 11, 1877.

Betsey Ann Barlow, Jo-616, was born on January 11, 1795, was baptized on October 30, 1795, died on May 05, 1874, at Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, and was  buried in the Upper Greens Farms Cemetery at Fairfield, Connecticut.

She married Burr Batterson on April 20, 1814, at Westport, Fairfield County, Connecticut   [Hartford Courant April 20, 1814]  He was born on February 20, 1795, and was a son of John and Sarah 'Allen' Batterson.

Betsey left her husband because he was not a "proper provider" and they apparently divorced.   She moved to Newark and lived with her daughter Mary Batterson Cobb.

Burr Batterson married second Eliza Baker around 1843.   He died on June 20, 1872, at age 77 years 4 months.  [The Batterson Family of Old Fairfield, Connecticut, by Bernice G. Sastrom]

Samuel Barlow married Sally H. -----.   She may have been Sarah Dimon, a daughter of Moses and Grizzell 'Thorp' Dimon of Highgate, Vermont.   She was born in 1780 in Vermont [GR, C1850].   She died on April 16, 1865, at St. Albans [VV] and was buried there in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Their children were:

Joel Barlow, Jo-261, was born on February 06, 1794, at Fairfield, Vermont [VV], and was a son  of Dimon Barlow and Susanna Seeley. He was a farmer and he was recorded at Fairfield in the 1830 - 1850 censuses.   He and his family moved to Wisconsin in 1852.   He died on April 23, 1873, in Rock Co Wisconsin and was buried there in the Grove Cemetery.

Joel Barlow married Lucy Burrall on May 20, 1830.   She was born on June 27, 1800, in Connecticut, the daughter of Ovid and Lucy "Wells" Burrall. She died on January 26, 1884, in Rock Co Wisconsin, and was buried there in the Grove Cemetery.

Their children were:

Noah Barlow, Jo-262, was born on May 03, 1798, and was a son of Dimon Barlow and Susanna Seeley. He moved to the south probably in the 1820's with his brother Abel and settled at Natchez, Adams Co Mississippi. He was a lawyer there and was recorded at Natchez in the 1840 census.  He died on June 07, 1847, at Natchez and was probably buried there.

Noah Barlow married Margaret Postlethwaite -or Postlewaite on April 06, 1834, in Adams  Co Mississippi. She was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth 'Morgan' Postlethwaite.  She was born on March 22, 1807, at Waynesburg, Green Co Pennsylvania, and died September 29, 1882 in Natchez Mississippi [Matthew Postlethwaite Genealogy]   After Noah's death she was recorded at Natchez in the 1850 census.

Noah Barlow was listed in partnership with a John Taylor at a firm called Barlow and Taylor Merchandising Firm in an Adams Co listing of business owners between c1822 and 1840.

Records show that Noah lived in Adams Co Mississippi, but land records show him to have purchased land in Madison Parish Louisiana in 1839 and 1846, both times he was shown to be a resident of Concordia Parish Louisana.   Noah is listed as a resident of Madison Parish Louisiana in 1840 as well as Adams County Mississippi. Concordia Parish is located directly across the Mississippi River from Adams Co Mississippi and a large number of residents and migrants to Concordia came to the parish by way of Adams County or the Natchez Territory. Many Adams County residents owned or worked on plantations in Concordia Parish, but lived in Natchez, Adams County. Noah was shown in census records to have many many laborers and slaves in his household, and I believe he was an owner of a large plantation in Concordia, and perhaps also in Adams Co Mississippi

Horace Barlow, Jo-484, was born in 1838 in probably in Natchez, Adams Co Mississippi [C1850]  He was recorded at Natchez with his parents in the 1850 census. 

He is believed to have served on the Confederate side in the Civil War as a Sergeant in Company G of the 12th Mississippi Regiment.

Daniel G. Barlow, was born on October 23, 1808, at Fairfield, Vermont [VV], and was a son of Dimon Barlow and Susanna Seeley.  He died May 26, 1867, at Oconto Co Wisconsin and was buried there in Evergreen Cemetery.

Daniel G. Barlow married Melinda Farnsworth.

She was born on August 15, 1817, the daughter of James and Sarah 'Woodward' Farnsworth. She died in 1885.

Daniel apparently migrated to Mississippi and Louisiana first, with his brothers, Noah and Abel, as he is shown to have purchased land in Madison Parish Louisiana in 1837

Their children were:

Edwin Barlow was born in 1841, and died March 30, 1845, age 4 years at Fairfield [VV] He is buried in the same lot with Dimon Barlow, Jo- 250, in the Bradley Cemetery.

Ebenezer Barlow, Jo-267, was born on April 20, 1803 [family records], or on May 20, 1803 [VV], at Fairfield, Vermont, and was the son of Ebenezer Barlow and Orissa B. Wilmarth.   He died on October 11, 1830, at Fairfield [VV], and was buried in the Barlow Cemetery.

Ebenezer Barlow married Lucy-----  Lucy was born on February 26, 1807 [VV]  She died at Fairfield [VV], and is buried in the Barlow Cemetery.

Their child was:

Sarah J. Barlow, Jo-270, was born on May 20, 1803, at Fairfield, Vermont.   She died September 05, 1868, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery St. Albans, Vermont.

She married first Eben S. Dorwin (1803-1837) on January 25, 1825

Sarah married second Anson Buck, a son of Comfort and Mary Buck, on May 28, 1842.  He died on February 15, 1864, at St. Albans and is buried in the Bradley Cemetery.

Hiram Barlow, Jo-271, was born on July 06, 1809, at Fairfield, Vermont, and was the son of Ebenezer Barlow and Orissa B. Wilmarth.  He was a farmer and was recorded at Fairfield in the 1840 and 1850 censuses.  He died on August 03, 1883, and was buried in Bradley Cemetery at Fairfield.

Hiram Barlow married Sappho Elvira Soule on May 04, 1831, at Fairfield. She was born on October 31, 1809 at Fairfield, daughter of Joseph and Esther 'Whitney' Soule. She died on January 30, 1880, and was buried in Bradley Cemetery at Fairfield.

Their children were:

Ebenezer Barlow, Jo-293, was born on January 14, 1832, at Fairfield, Vermont.  He was recorded living with his parents at Fairfield in the 1850 census.  He was a petroleum dealer at Titusville, Crawford Co Pennsylvania, in 1873.  He died on December 02, 1891, at Corfu, Genesee County, New York.

Ebenezer Barlow married Elizabeth Ann Collins in May, 1859, at Chardon, Ohio  [New England Historical Genealogy Register, Vol. 761]  She was born in 1841 at Chardon. They had no children.

Edward Putnam Barlow, Jo-295, was born on February 01, 1838, at Fairfield, Vermont.  He was listed with his parents at Fairfield in the 1850 census.  He died unmarried on July 4, 1860, at Warsaw, Arkansas and was buried in the Bradley Cemetery at Fairfield. [New England Historical Genealogy Register, Vol. 761]  

He is believed to have been a soldier although no record of his service has been found.

Clarence Hiram Barlow, Jo-296, was born on January 20, 1841, at Fairfield, Vermont.  He was listed with his parents at Fairfield in the 1850 census. 

On March 26, 1862, he enlisted as a private at Fairfield in Company B of the 3rd Vermont Infantry Regiment. He was taken prisoner on September 04, 1862, near Sugar Loaf Mountain, Maryland, and was paroled the same day. He was recorded as deserting on January 24, 1863. In 1873 he was a petroleum dealer and resident at Parker's Landing, Pennsylvania.  

He died unmarried on May 10, 1913, at San Diego, California.

Florence Marion Barlow, Jo-297, was born on September 20, 1846, at Fairfield.  She died in March 1928.

She married Wallace Corning Dickey on November 23, 1870, at Fairfield.

Eloisa Barlow, Jo-272, was born on July 06, 1809, at Fairfield, Vermont.   She died on July 12, 1876.

Ruel Barlow, Jo-306, was born in 1826 probably at Fairfield, Vermont.  He was a recorded as a farmer and living with his mother at Fairfield in the 1850 census.   He died in 1893 and was buried in the Bradley Cemetery at Fairfield.

Ruel Barlow married Julia Hatch on November 19, 1861, at Swanton, Vermont [VV]. She was the daughter Ezekial and Eliza Hatch.  In 1868, a Julia Gertrude Barlow changed her name to Julia Gertrude Hatch [VV].  It is believed that Ruel and Julia divorced and she changed her name back to her maiden name.

Laura Barlow, Jo-276, was born in 1809, probably at Fairfield, Vermont.   She died in 1875.

She married David A. Smalley

Their children were:

Bradley Barlow, Jo-277, was born on May 12, 1814, at Fairfield, Vermont, and was a son of Bradley Barlow and Deborah Sherman.  He was a merchant and a Congressman.   He was recorded at Fairfield in the 1850 census and at St. Albans, Vermont, in the 1860 census.  He died on October 31, 1889 at Denver, Colorado [Denver Post death notice], and was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery at St. Albans.

Life and Times of Bradley Barlow

Bradley Barlow married Caroline Farnsworth in 1837 probably at Fairfield. She was the daughter of James and Sarah 'Woodward' Farnsworth of Fairfield and was born on May 20, 1819, at Fairfield.

Their children, born in Fairfield were:

Sidney Barlow, Jo-278, was born around 1801 in Vermont [C1850], and was a son of David Barlow and Lydia Morse.   He was recorded as a merchant at Burlington, Vermont, in the 1850 census.

Sidney Barlow married first Harriet Reed in November 06, 1828, at Burlington [VV].  She was born about 1801 and died on November 22, 1834, at Burlington and was buried there in  the Elmwood Cemetery [VV].

Sidney Barlow married second Caroline D. White.   She died on February 21, 1838, at the age of 30 [VV]. They had no children.

Sidney Barlow married third Mary Pope on December 03, 1839, at Burlington [VV]   She was born about 1809 in Massachusetts [C1850]

Ellen Loomis Barlow, Jo-520, was born in 1831 probably at Burlington [C1850]

Horace Barlow enlisted on August 23, 1862, at Burlington as a private in Company C of the 12 Vermont Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. He was mustered out on July 14, 1863, and received a pension on April 04, 1896, when he was a resident in Wisconsin.

She married Julius Q. Carlisle

Their children were:

Samuel Hubbard Barlow, Jo-280, was born in 1804 in Vermont [GR, C1850], and was the son of Samuel Barlow and Sally H. ------ perhaps Dimon.  He was a physician at St. Albans, Vermont, were he was recorded as Hubbell Barlow in the 1850 census. He died on August 14, 1858, at St. Albans and was buried there in the Greenwood Cemetery [GR, VV].

Samuel Hubbard Barlow married Rebecca J. Eecles.  She was born in 1807 [GR] and was the daughter of James Eecles.    She died on June 11, 1834, at St. Albans and was buried there in the Greenwood Cemetery.

He married Mary M. Huntly on September 15, 1848, at Burlington, Vermont [VV], but she is not  listed in the 1850 census.

Abel Barlow, Jo-291, was born on March 19, 1839, at Burlington, Vermont [VV], and was a son of Joel Barlow and Lucy Burrall.  He was a farmer and he moved to near Footville, Rock Co Wisconsin, with his parents in 1852.  He died on November 10, 1901, Rock Co Wisconsin, and was buried there in the Grove Cemetery.

Abel Barlow married first Emily Duzenberry Wiggins December 29, 1856, Rock Co Wisconsin.  She was was the daughter of Alexander C. and Rachel Wiggins, born on August 18, 1837, at  Elmira, Chemung Co New York, and died on November 22, 1878, in Rock Co Wisconsin, and  was buried there in the Grove Cemetery.

Abel Barlow married second Maria 'Frost' Bryan.

Effie Lucy Barlow was born on February 06, 1858 in Rock County, Wisconsin.  She died on September 05, 1931, at Los Angeles, California

Edward Burrall Barlow was born on April 23, 1861, in Rock County, Wisconsin.   He died on May 17, 1951, Los Angeles, California and was buried there in the Inglewood Cemetery.

Harry Oscar Barlow was born on June 24, 1868, in Rock County, Wisconsin.   He died on January 18, 1931, at Janesville, Wisconsin and is buried there in the Grove  Cemetery.

Glen Albert Barlow was born May 10, 1872, in Rock County, Wisconsin.  He died on February 20, 1951, at Los Angeles, California.

Henry Lillard Barlow, Jo-292, was born on April 20, 1836, at Fairfield, and was a son of Joel Barlow and Lucy Burrall.  He was listed with his parents at Fairfield in the 1850 census.  He died on November 04, 1876.

Henry Lillard Barlow married Jennie Young on November 07, 1862. She was born on June 23, 1838, and she died on February 07, 1927.

Their children were:

William Edward Barlow was born in 1856 and was the son of Daniel G. Barlow and Melinda Farnsworth.  He lived at Nahma, Delta County, Michigan.  He died on September 26, 1929.

The Diamond Drill - Thursday, July 29. 1971   Rites Held on Saturday for Brad Barlow

Rites were held at the Plowe Funeral Chapel, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for one of the communities eldest citizens, Bradley Barlow, 89 a resident recently of Crystal Manor, who died late Wednesday afternoon while golfing at the Crystal Falls Municipal Golf Course.

The circumstances of his death were almost appropriate. Mr. Barlow had been an avid golfer well past the age that forces most to give up most pursuits. His interest dated back to the years the local club was established, and his love for the game and the course led to hole no. 2 at the municipal links being named in his honor years ago.

He was playing with a group of older golfers and was preparing to hole out on no. 4 green when he was stricken and died apparently instantly.

Mr. Barlow was born on July 11, 1882; in Oconto, Wisconsin but had been a resident for the past 65 years. He was employed for the past 50 years as a salesman for the Carpenter-Cook Co. and was an insurance company representative prior to total retirement at an advanced age.

He was a member of the Crystal Falls Masonic Lodge, and a life member of the Masonic Blue Lodge. Masonic Lodge memorial services were held at the funeral chapel Friday evening at 8. He was also a member of the Iron County Sportsman's Club.

Farnsworth Lee Barlow was born on March 02, 1895.  He died in January, 1975  [Social Security Application]   [WWI Civilian Draft Registration]

Ellen Loomis Barlow, Jo-520, was born in 1831 probably at Burlington [C1850].

She married first George King Platt on June 20, 1849, at Burlington [VV].  He died on September 23, 1857, at Burlington.

She married 2nd Martin L. Dimick on September 10, 1861 Woodstock, Vermont [VV]

Known child of Ellen Barlow and George Platt:

Julia Barlow Platt  born on September 14, 1857 at San Francisco, Cailifornia and died on May 31, 1935 at Pacific Grove, California and was buried at sea.

Julia Barlow Platt

Richard Edgar Barlow, Jo-290, or Edgar Richard Barlow was born on March 07, 1831, at St. Albans, Vermont [VV] and was a son of Samuel Hubbard Barlow and Rebecca Eecles.   He was recorded as an office clerk at Ogdenburg, St. Lawrence, County, New York, in the 1860 census. He died around 1908.

It is believed that he was the Richard E. Barlow who enlisted as a private on November 15, 1861, at St. Albans in Company A of the 1st Vermont Cavalry Regiment. He was taken prisoner on May 24, 1862 at Middletown, Virginia, and was paroled on September 13, 1862. He was discharged on January 04, 1863, with a disability. His pension record note that his widow Margaret A. Barlow, a resident of Missouri, applied for a pension on June 01, 1908. She was apparently his second (or more) wife.

Richard Edgar Barlow married first Julia A. Ayers.  She was born in 1834 in Vermont [C1850].

Their children were:

Roland Hastings Barlow was born on September 29, 1859, at Bakersfield, Vermont [VV].  He was a machinist and lived at 179 South Main Street, St. Albans, Vermont.

Edward Burrall Barlow was born on April 23, 1861, in Rock County, Wisconsin.   He died on May 17, 1951, Los Angeles, California and was buried there in the Inglewood Cemetery.

He married Minie Strang on December 23, 1884, at Footville, Rock County, Wisconsin.   She was born on April 28, 1864, and she died on November 08, 1947.

Harry Oscar Barlow was born on June 24, 1868, in Rock County, Wisconsin.   He died on January 18, 1931, at Janesville, Wisconsin and is buried there in the Grove  Cemetery.

He married Blanche Crow on December 08, 1890.  She was born on December 01, 1869, and died on September 15, 1946.

Their children were:

Glen Albert Barlow was born May 10, 1872, in Rock County, Wisconsin.  He died on February 20, 1951, at Los Angeles, California.

He married Grace Foster

Their children were: 

Roland Hastings Barlow was born on September 29, 1859, at Bakersfield, Vermont [VV].  He was a machinist and lived at 179 South Main Street, St. Albans, Vermont.

He married 1) Ellen Ayres Reed.  She died at the age of 31 years of pneumonia

He married 2) Minnie E. Woodworth on December 05, 1894, at Bakersfield. She was a daughter of John Morey Woodworth, and was born on December 15, 1866, at Berkshire, Vermont She died on December 30, 1908, at St. Albans.
