John Sandford writes:  In addition to descendants of those shown here, I would also like to have at least a couple of generations of Alfred H. BARLOW's ancestors. Anything that you can send that will add to this information will be appreciated. I would be happy to send any records that I have, but you have seen about all on the BARLOW family.

Mary Lee Hartzell Young, March 2010, writes: Mary Lee Hartzell Young, March 2010, writes:  The information I have leads me to believe that my gggrandfather, Julius Barlow was the brother of Alfred H. Barlow. Julius was born 1821 in New York, married Adelaide Charlebois of Canada in 1845 in Quebec, Canada and died in 1862 in Cumberland Co NJ.
They lived in Rootstown, Ohio.
They had four children, the youngest, a daughter. Angelina Adelaide, was my g grandmother. In 1866 the children were members of the First Congregational Church of Rootstown, but in 1870 transferred membership to Tallmadge Methodist Church. Julius apparently deserted the family sometime after Angelina's birth. After he died, Adelaide married Charles Holden. Angelina married Clemmen Oscar Lee in Portage Co Ohio and had three children. Their son Dwight Barlow Lee was my grandfather and his daughter, Elma Barlow Lee was my mother.
Julius is a mystery and very elusive. Have you ever come across him?
Further information for Julius Barlow:   Julius was called Julien in the Canadian records.
There were actually four children - Edwin J. (or G.) born in Canada about 1847; Eli E., probably born 27 February 1850; Marion O. (May) born about 1852; Angelina Adelaide (Angie) born 23 May 1854 in Rootstown.  I can't find any of them except Angie after 1870.  In  1870 Eli is living with Adelaide and Charles Holden (her second husband who she married 03 November 1866 in Rootstown).  In 1860 Adelaide is a "washer women" so I imagine she had a hard time after her husband "disappeared".  I have Charles Holden's pension record in which Adelaide states that her first husband, Julius Barlow died 07 June 1862 in Dorchester, Cumberland Co New Jersey.  We live in  suburban Philadelphia near that area and a few years ago I spent a day trying to find where Julius was buried. There are other Barlows
who lived in that general area then but I was unable to find any mention of Julius.  Julius was in Rootstown in 1851 on a voter list and Angie was born in May 1854 so he must have been there until at least 1853.  Marion was probably called May.  May Barlow joined First Congregational Rootstown 06 May 1866 by examination, same day as Eli and Angie, her brother and sister.   Transfered her membership to Tallmadge Methodist Church 3 April 1870, same day as Angie.  Can find
no more record of her.
Edwin is named Edward in 1860 census and said to have been born in Ohio.  1850 census says Canada which I suspect is right since they were married there in 1845 (I have the church record of their marriage).
My mother always said that Julius was born in Connecticut but in census records, it says New York and so was Alfred H.  Julius was also a shoemaker as was Alfred H. early on.   Laura Barlow Bradshaw, daughter if Alfred H. signed an affidavit for Adelaides pension application (as widow of Charles Holden after he died) another reason to believe there was a close relationship.  I suspect that Julius was the black sheep of the family, but he may have not been well.
I did find a gravesite for Eli E. Barlow in the Markillie Cemetery, Hudson, Summit Co Ohio.  I suspect it is the right Eli Barlow, but cannot prove it.  Monument engraved with name and birth and death information.  Birth date is off from my estimate.  Born 27 February 1850 - Died 03 September 1879 - Momument erected by mother    Find a Grave Memorial #6849753
The family has been difficult  to find. I can't seem to find it, but  I think that Adelaide Barlow's last name was misspelled on the 1860 census (something like Barley or Barton)  I will check further on that.  I have wondered if Charles Holden became the legal guardian of Adelaide's children as they were still relatively young.  Adelaide and Charles Holden are buried in the Stow Cemetery, Stow, Summit Co Ohio, with my grandfather, Dwight Barlow Lee, his second wife Gertrude Phoebe Lee, and his brother, Clyde Scott Lee.  Angelina and her husband Clemmen Oscar Lee are buried in that cemetery too.
I need to get to that area again sometime, but I am 83 and my husband is 84 and we don't travel much anymore.  I do have a Lee third cousin there who has done a lot of research on that branch and shared it  with me.  I would really like to find out more about the Barlow side of my family.  If you find anything more, please let me know.
