M. S. BARLOW PASSES -- Was a Well Known and Respected Citizen

Marion Stephen Barlow departed this life Saturday, March 10, at 6:30 p.m. Though he had been in failing health for some time he had been sick in bed only a little over a week. Despite the seriousness of his condition the end came as a surprise, as up to a short time before his death his condition was thought to be improved. 

Mr. Barlow was born in Gallipolis December 24, 1838, and was in his 79th year.

As a young man he attended the Gallia Academy under Professor and Mrs. A. G. Sears and left school to join Company B of the 91st Regiment Ohio Valley Infantry in which he served three years.

After the war he went to Illinois where he was in the shoe business. Then he married Miss Eva Browne in 1875.

In 1880 he came back to Gallipolis and for several years engaged in the coal business, which however because of ill health he was compelled to give up.

On March 2 last Mr. Barlow remarked that sixty years ago that day he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. In this church he was up to the last few years of his life always an active member. He had been a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, a member of the choir, and was for many years a member of the official board of Grace M. E. Church.

He leaves to glory in his gain his widow and two sons, Edwin Morley of Chicago, and Alfred M. at home. He is also survived by three brothers, Tell and Bryson of Streator, Illinois, and John of Los Angeles, and one sister, Mrs. William Lanning of Wilwankee.

He was preceded to the Great Beyond by one brother and one sister--Mr. B. Frank Barlow and Mrs. Fannie A. Cating, the mother of J. Earnest Cating of this city.

Mr. Barlow's family were early settlers both of America and of Gallia County, coming to Connecticut in 1630 and here in 1803. He was a descendant of Nathaniel Hull and a great grandson of Colonel Aaron Barlow of the Revolution. His great uncle was Joel Barlow, secretary of the Scioto Land Company that settled Gallipolis.

Morley Barlow accompanied by Mrs. Barlow's mother, Mrs. M. M. Browne, and sister Mrs. T. D. McGuire, arrived from Chicago this morning.

The funeral will be from the home tomorrow, Tuesday, at 2 P.M., by the Rev. Dr. Cherington with interment by Wetherholt at Pine Street cemetery.

The pall-bearers are Capt. J. C. Hutsinpiller, J. G. Damron, A. W. Kerns, John Stone, A. R. Weaver and H. C. Zimmerman
