George Barton Barlow, M.D.

With a wide reputation in cardiology, Dr.G. Barton Barlow has served as chief of medicine of the Englewood New Jersey Hospital since 1952. His position as director of cardiology there has been continuous since 1948, and he is also president of the Bergen County Heart Association. He holds the rank of fellow in a half-dozen nationwide medical societies.

A native of Ossining, New York, Dr. Barlow was born on April 11, 1906, and is a son of John Curry and Josephine Barton "Bassett" Barlow.   He is the eleventh in a line of descent from John Barlow, who came fromWales and settled near Fairfield Connecticut, as early as 1650. He married Ann Ward, and from them the line descends through John (2) and Abigail Lockwood Barlow; John (3) Barlow, who married Ruth Sherwood Drake; Samuel Barlow, who married Sarah Sherman Strong; Jabez and Elizabeth Hunt Barlow, John (4) and Sarah Whitney Barlow; John (5) and Lorana Scott Barlow; John (6) and Julia Ann Jarvis Barlow;and William Henry Barlow and Catherine Stratton Lent Barlow, who were the parents of John Curry Barlow. John Curry Barlow, the physicians father, was born in the same town as his son, but it was then known as Sing-Sing.  The year of his birth was 1870, and h emarried  Josephine Barton Bassett in 1898. Born in 1872, she was a daughter of Edwin Percival and Elizabeth "Warner" Barton.

The couple had two children, the elder being a daughter, Katherine Barton, who married Edward Winslow Kane.  John C. Barlow was a merchant, and he died in 1938.  His wife survived him until 1960.   After receiving his early education in the public elementary and secondary schools of his native city, Dr. Barlow graduated from Ossining High School in 1924.  He then entered Williams College in Massachusetts, where he earned his degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1928.  His degree of Doctor of Medicine was granted him by Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1932. Between that time and 1934 he served an internship at Brooklyn Hospital.

When in 1934 Dr. Barlow was ready to commence his private practice of medicine, he chose Englewood, New Jersey, as his center of professional activity, and has been there ever since.  In 1937 he became associate attending physician at Englewood Hospital, and later served as attending physician there until 1952.  In the latter year, he was named chief of medicine at the hospital; and he has been director of cardiology there since 1948. Also in 1952 he became director of medicine at Bergen Pines County Hospital, but resigned from this post in 1956, and has been consultant in medicine there since 1957.  This hospital is located in Paramus, New Jersey.

Dr.Barlow was absent at the time of WorldWar II, serving as medical officer in the United States Army Air Corps. His enlistment dated from May 15, 1942, and he was in uniform unti lFebruary 06, 1946, beginning as first lieutenant and receiving his discharge as a major. After a year's service in this country, he went to the Mediterranean Theater, and received combat stars for the Naples-Foggia and North Appenines campaigns, and for the invasion of Southern France.

Dr. Barlow holds the rank of fellow in the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology,  the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Angiology, the Councilon Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association, and the Phlebology Society of America.  A member of the Bergen County Medical Society, he has held offices as its secretary and president.  His service to the Bergen County Heart Association is of long duration.  He joined it when it was formed, served as vice president, and is now its president.

In consequence of his effective leadership, he has received a distinguished service award from the American Heart Association.  Still another of his professional interests is the New Jersey Heart Association.  For several years he served on its board of trustees, and committee.  He has also been chairman of its physicans education committee, and a member of its executive committee.

Apart from his professional memberships, Dr. Barlow is a member of the Englewood Club and Knickerbocker Country Club.  He registers as a Republican, and attends the Episcopal Church.  Philately is his hobby.

On June 27, 1931, at Briarcliff Manor, New York, Dr. G. Barton Barlow married Alice Denison Fisher.  She is a daughter of Frederick VanKleekand Alice "Wooledge" Fisher of New York City.  Her father was a civil engineer.

Dr. and Mrs. Barlow have two sons:

John Denison, who is a professor on the faculty of New York University and makes his home in Yonkers,  New York.  Married to the former Eleanor Singer, he is the father of a son, Aaron A.,born December 19, 1963, and a daughter, Deborah E., born March 30, 1966.

Dr. Peter Bassett, who has followed in his father's footsteps as a physician.  He is in residency in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He married Marian Reinmund and they have two sons:David R., born January 21, 1964, and Jeffery G., born March 3, 1965.

Dr. and Mrs. Barlow make their home in Tenafly, New Jersey.

ALICE FISHER DENISON BARLOW, 87, of Tenafly died Jan. 11. She was a member of the Shell Museum and Educational Foundation of the New York Shell Club, New York City. Surviving are two sons, John Denison Barlow in Indiana and Dr. Peter Bassett Barlow in New Hampshire, and seven grandchildren. Her husband, Dr. G. Barton Barlow, is deceased.
A memorial service will be held Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Episcopal Church, Englewood.

PETER BASSETT BARLOW, 58, of Hanover, N.H., formerly of Englewood, died Saturday. He was chief of the pulmonary section at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, Hanover. A 1958 graduate of Harvard University, he received a doctorate from Columbia Medical School in 1962.
