When the Civil War broke out Abel J. Barlow joined
Co. C, 27th New York Volunteers, in 1861 and was wounded
in the battle of Gaines Mill, Virginia.

age 21, Private, Co C 27th NY Infantry, organized
at Elmira NY May 21, 1861 --also perhaps 62nd NY
Infantry --- mustered out with company May 31, 1863

Mr. Barlow was a printer, who learned
his trade in the Deposit Union-Democrat. Later,
he worked on the Kingston Ulster Democrat and after
the war was employed on the Albany Knickerbocker
Press. He then went to Unadilla and purchased
a newspaper called "Home
and Abroad", but later changed the
name to the Unadilla Times. After thirteen years, he
sold the paper to Newell and Parsons.
While he made his home in Oneonta he
was prominent in veteran circles and is believed
to be the next to last member of the E. D.
Farmer Post, G.A.R. George
Dugan of Roxbury is the other one. He was
often in attendance at V.F.W. meetings and banquets
of that organization and the American Legion always
found him present. He
made several interesting talks before those groups.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y., March 6.
Abel J. Barlow, for more than fifty years
editor of the Unadilla (N.Y.) Times, died today at Cannonsville, Delaware
County, in his ninety-ninth years.
Mr. Barlow served with Company
C, Twenty-seventh Division, New York Volunteers
during the Civil
War and was wounded at Chattanooga. Born in a
log cabin on his father's farm at Cannonsville
in 1840, he was one of three surviving Civil War
veterans in Delaware County.
Several nieces and nephews survive. Burial will
take place Thursday at Deposit, N.Y. Original

Abel J. Barlow, 98 Dies at Cannonsville, Sidney
Abel J. Barlow succumbed shortly before Mid-night
Sunday at the home of Millard Walley, Cannonsville,
where he had resided for some time. He was born
in Cannonsville, August 30, 1840. His father T.B.
Barlow enlisted in 1862, at the age of 55, a member
of Co. B, 144th New York Volunteers and was the oldest
member of his regiment.

and Guy funeral home, Deposit. Rev. M.W. Pomeroy, pastor
of the Baptist Church there officiating. Internment
was made in Pine Grove Cemetery, Deposit.
