Ancestors of Edna Catherine and Pearl May Barlow

By Frances Chan     Last update 19 June 1999

"Ancestors of Edna Katherine and Pearl May Barlow" was written by Frances Chan, daughter of Pearl Barlow, and published in Australia in 1998. It was sold to numerous American libraries and individuals when Frances took a supply of the books from Australia to America in August of 1998. She  left a few copies with Washington County Historical Society in Abingdon, Virginia for sale. The Society is located in the County Courthouse.

Mail orders can still be filled from Australia for US $25 + $7 for airmail postage, insurance and handling--total US $32.

Orders should be sent by airmail to:

Frances Chan
PO Box 68
Hervey Bay, Qld. 4655, Australia

Payment should be by personal check or money order in US dollars.    Allow 4 to 6 weeks for airmail delivery.

Frances is happy to correspond by post or e-mail with regard to the contents of the book, prior to purchase, because only those who share Joseph BARLOW b. 1817 as an ancestor will find much of interest in her work.

Potential purchasers should note that the Barlow portion of the 167-page paperback is only 29 pages -- the rest of the book being devoted to ancestors of 8 other surnames.

The DOCUMENTED BARLOWS begin with:

Joseph Barlow born 10 October 1817 in Washington Co Virginia who married Sarah Robinson

There is circumstantial evidence to indicate that he was likely the son of Joseph BARLOW, Sr. of Washington Co but no documentation has been found.

There are extensive details on Sarah Robinson's ancestors --Robinson and Edmiston-- in the book.

There is a limited amount on Joseph and Sarah's descendants except for their son, Charles Jesse, who was Frances' grandfather. His family is covered in detail, and includes several photos.

Charles Jesse Barlow married Catherine Susannah "Kate" Wilcox

Their children were:

Charles Marvin Barlow was married - adopted a girl - he died in California

Edna K. Barlow married Harry Somers

Children 2 girls and 1 boy--all alive in Oregon except one girl

One of the girls is Mrs. Marge Holman, who is now a great grandmother -- has 5 children

The boy is Howard Barlow Somers -- he has 4 children

Edna died in Oregon

Guy Robinson "Bob" was married - adopted a daughter - he died in Washington

Pearl Barlow married Mr. Cooke -   Pearl died in Hawaii

Frances Cooke Chan is their only child.

Ruby died as an infant in Illinois

Andrew Thomas believes that the younger Joseph Barlow was the son of Joseph, Sr. He posted some details on the on this website with regard to how he believes the Joseph, Jr. family is related to his family.

Andrew's website: "Families of Washington and Smyth Co Virginia"
contains the details he has on various branches of the Washington Co BARLOWS, including some collateral branches of the family covered in more detail than in Frances' book.  See also Andrews notes in reference to the Barlow / Thomas / Gross families
