I have included a few generations of the lineages of GROSS, WIDENER, and COLE as they are intermarried to these BARLOW families and it may help descendants of these families to trace their migrations. Note that Washington Co Virginia became a part of Tennessee.

January 2007: I, Susan BARLOW Holmes, webmistress of Barlow Genealogy. have taken on the task of trying to verify some of these families thru records found on the internet, particularly census. In most cases, I find that the records available, other than census, are repeated over and over, with no documentation. This family will need a lot of work to prove the earlier generations before 1850, which I will not be able to do. March 2007: DNA testing has shown this family to be a member of the Lancashire group of Barlows, more commonly known as the John Barlow of Fairfield Connecticut.

NANCY ANN3 BARLOW born c1810 in Virginia. She married SAMUEL DENNISTON on November 27, 1846 Smyth Co Virginia. (Smyth Co Virginia Marriage Records transcribed online) In 1850, I found a 31 year old Samuel Dennison in Smyth Co Virginia, living with the Dungan family, and a 40 year old Nancy Dennison, with children Susannah, Mary and William, living separately, so I am unsure if they are the same. On 08 August 1860, they were in Seven Mile Ford, Smyth Co Virginia, pg 974, #724/726, Samuel, age 45, laborer, Nancy Anne, age 43, and Mary Jane Barlow, age 16, and Joseph Barlow, age 18, all born in Virginia. I'm not sure who the Barlow children are. I could not locate Sam and Nancy after 1860.

DENNISTON on April 20, 1854 in Smyth Co Virginia (Smyth Co Virginia Marriage Records transcribed online) On 07 August 1860, Western Dst, Liberty Hall, Washington Co Virginia, pg 529, #1233/1182, Benjamin is age 35, born in Tennessee, married to Dorcas, age 18, born in Virginia. No children. I was unable to locate them after 1860.

9. THOMAS BARLOW, born c1825, and died after 1891, when he registered to vote in Sullivan Co Tennessee.

10. RACHEL BARLOW, born October 1832, and died 1927, burial in James Cemetery, Chilhowie, Smyth Co Virginia.

3-2. JACOB BARLOW2 was born before 1793 Virginia and one source says he died December 03, 1813 Norfolk, Virginia in the War of 1812. History of Missouri, 1889, said he was in the War of 1812, but did not die until 1830. (Jacob Barlow, Private 5th Regiment, Virginia Militia)

He married DORCAS GROSS, daughter of John Gross and Barbara Widener. Dorcas married JOHN PRESLEY after Jacob's death. One source shows Jacob and Dorcas' marriage to have taken place 12 December 1816 in Washington Co Virginia. If that is the case, the 1810 census for Jacob Barlow may not be the same person. To further confuse the issue, Dorcas is said to have married John Presley on on 17 August 1817 in Washington Co Virginia. (Marriages performed by John Jones Jr., Demonination unknown) This family will need much more research and documentation to prove.

6-3. SARAH3 BARLOW, daughter of Solomon Barlow and Lucretia Gross was born c1814, and died after the 1880 census.

She married JAMES THOMAS, her first cousin, on April 14, 1831 in Washington Co Virginia. (Marriage records transcribed online show the marriage date to be October 24, 1833 in Smyth Co Virginia) The son of John Thomas and Elizabeth Gross, he was born c1810 in Tennessee, and died in July 1863, Washington Co Virginia, burial in Friendship Cemetery, Washington Co Virginia.

Excerpt from 'Families of Washington County and Bristol, Virginia, 1776-1996,' page 330 is a family history of the Thomas Family, found at Genforum, submitted by Bob Ford. "... Across the border in Smyth County is the James Cemetery. It was a favored burial ground for the BARLOW and GROSS families. There are 72 unmarked graves and eight illegible tombstone here ..." "James Thomas born c1810 in Virginia was a farmer and a shoemaker. We believe his death took place in July 1863 at age 54 years. He is buried in Friendship Cemetery. He married before 1837, but we have not found a marriage record in Washington County. His wife was Sarah 'Sally' BARLOW born circa 1814 in Virginia. We believe her to be the daughter of Joseph BARLOW and Rachel THOMAS who were married 04 February 1808 in Washington County. Joseph was listed in 1797 Washington County tithables. We think Jonathan BARLOW born circa 1820 was a sibling of Sally’s. He was listed in the 1850 Washington County census and was a next door neighbor to Sally and James. His wife was Nancy born circa 1825. Their two children were Mima born circa 1844 and Rachel born circa 1846. All of them were Virginia born.." Information from George Ledford: Jonathan Barlow was in the 25th Virginia Cavalry, Company G, during the Civil War. It was also known as 'Lee Rangers.' It mustered at Max Meadows on November 17, 1862. The 25th was originally called the 27th Battalion Virginia Cavalry. He was captured by the Federal cavalry on August 4, 1864, near Springfield and Moorefield, Virginia. He was interned in the prisoner of was camp called Camp Chase, which was in Columbus, Ohio. He was released in mid or late Spring of 1865 and walked back to Lee County, VA. He was 5'6" with gray hair and blue eyes. There is a Confederacy Cemetery in Columbus where over 2,000 Confederate prisoner's of war who died there are buried. CONFEDERATE VIRGINIA TROOPS (From the 25th web site) Jonathon Barlow is listed as a private. 25th Regiment, Virginia Cavalry. 25th Cavalry Regiment was organized in July, 1864, using the 27th Battalion Virginia Partisan Rangers as its nucleus. Serving in McCausland's and Imboden's Brigade, the unit fought in numerous engagements in western Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. During April, 1865, it disbanded. Its commanders were Colonel Warren M. Hopkins, Lieutenant Colonel Henry A. Edmundson, and Major Sylvester R. McConnell. DAVID NOAH BARLOW son of Thomas Barlow and Leah Gross, born c1861 in Virginia. He married M. ANGELINE, and I don't believe had any children. I could not locate David in 1900 census. In 1910 Bristol, Sullivan Co Tennessee, he is married to Angeline, his first marriage, her second, they had been married 12 years, she had borned 2 children, both living. His age is 49, she 52. They had a 7 year old servant, Estell Mead, shows her as being black. THOMAS BARLOW, born September 1866 in Virginia / Tennessee. He married VIRGINIA CARLIN. She was born March 04, 1864, and died December 25, 1929, burial in Stophel Cemetery, Sullivan Co Tennessee. They had no children. In 1900, Thomas and Virginia C. were in Dst 2, Sullivan Co Tennessee, next to James Barlow, Thomas, age 33, born Sept 1866 in Tennessee; Virginia, age 33, born March 1866 in Virginia, married 13 years, 1 child born, 0 living. In 1910, Thomas and Virginia were in Dst. 6, Sullivan Co Tennessee, he age 42, she age 44, both born in Virginia, married 24 years, no children born, her second marriage. In 1920, they were in Dst 2, Sullivan Co Tennessee, he age 53, born in Tennessee; she age 54, born in Virginia.

10-3. RACHEL3 BARLOW was born October 1832 in Virginia, and died 1927, burial in James Cemetery, Chilhowie, Smyth Co Virginia. She may have married a BARLOW, or she may have had children out of wedlock. (Another possibility is that Rachel is actually a daughter-in-law in the home of Rachel Thomas Barlow.
NOTE: If these children are born out of wedlock, and their father is not a Barlow, but they are carrying their mother's maiden name, then DNA testing from these children, in particular, James, would not result in a match with any of the Barlow's tested, nor would they be a match to any of the Barlow's of this line in earlier generations.

Children of Rachel Barlow are:	In 1850, and 1860, Rachel is living at home with her mother. In 1860, a James Barlow, age 1 is also living in the home, and assumed to be Rachel's child. I was unable to locate Rachel or James in an 1870 census. St Clair Dst, Smyth Co Virginia 15 June 1880 pg 124 #366/366 Rachel Barlow, widowed, age 47, born in Virginia Amanda A. Barlow, daughter, age 18, born in Virginia Sarah M. Barlow, daughter, age 13, born in Virginia In 1900 Smyth Co Virginia, Rachel is living with her widowed daughter, Manda Barlow, and is shown as widowed with 2 children born and both living. So who is Sarah M.? I was unable to locate Rachel in a 1910 census. In 1920, Rachell, age 87, lives with her son, James H. Barlow in St Clair Prct, Smyth Co Washington.

11-3. JOHN BARLOW, son of Jacob Barlow and Dorcas Gross, was born about 1811 Virginia, and died after 1870, probably in Smyth Co Virginia.

He married 1) MARTHA 'MATTIE' COLE. The daughter of John Cole and Sarah Williams or Winifred Meak, she was born January 12, 1812 in Washington Co Virginia, and died after 1870, probably in Smyth Co Virginia. (Darlene Dewitt at Rootsweb gives the name as Winifred Bryant Meak, the second wife of John Cole) One source showed John Barlow married a second time, to Jemima, but I believe that to be incorrect.

12-3. WELLINGTON BARLOW was born to Jacob Barlow and Dorcas Gross on May 27, 1822 in Virginia and died April 06, 1890 near Richland, Pulaski Co Missouri, burial in Rollins Cemetery, Pulaski Co Missouri.

He married NANCY JANE STAMPER on January 01, 1845 in Owen Co Kentucky. The daughter of Nathaniel Green Stamper and Sarah Jones, she was born August 19, 1824 in Owen Co Kentucky and died November 19, 1875 near Richland, Pulaski Co Missouri, and is buried with her husband in Rollins Cemetery.

Wellington Barlow, a farmer and nurseryman of Liberty Township, was born in Washington Co Virginia in 1822, and was the sixth child in the family of ten children born to Jacob and Dorcas 'Gross' Barlow. Jacob Barlow who was a soldier in the War of 1812, died about 1830. A part of the family subsequently removed to Kentucky, where the mother died about 1850. She was a member of the Baptist Church, and was a daughter of John Gross, an Englishman. Wellington received his education in the common subscription schools, to which he was obliged to walk several miles.

January 01, 1845, he married Nancy, daughter of Nathaniel Stamper, a native of North Carolina, but one of the pioneers of Kentucky where Mrs. Barlow was born. Mr. Stamper afterwards, removed to Missouri, where he lived until his death, which occurred about 1883.

Of the twelve children born to Mr. and Mrs. Barlow, six are now living: Tennis, Joseph, Sarah, wife of John Nelson, R. Lincoln, Catherine and Sherman.

In 1848, Mr. Barlow removed to near Burlington Iowa, where he lived until 1866, then coming to Pulaski Co Missouri, on the Gasconade River, where he has since improved and still owns a good farm of 160 acres, on which in 1868, he established a nursery. In this business he has been very successful. He raises some stock, but pays particular attention to the growth of apple and peach trees.

Mr. Barlow is a Democrat in politics, and cast his first successful vote for Polk in 1844. He has been a member of the Baptist Church since about 1840. Mrs. Barlow died in the fall of 1877, having been a member of the Baptist Church for many years.

I did not locate them in an 1850 census.

Emma writes to Leona in an undated letter:

There were also records of my family's membership and their dismissal by letter on December 26, 1908, when they moved to Vinita, Oklahoma. I was 2 years old. My husband, Dallas Luttes, and I attended this Centennial with Edna and Harrison Barlow. They were then living on the old Barlow place. While I was there, I got them the records from the Old Barlow Bible. A few years later, the old house with all the records, pictures and Bible, burned.

Harrison, born in 1889, and Edna, born in 1900, never married. They live on a farm near Gasconade River and the old home place. Their address: Route #2 Box 105, Richland, Missouri.

Harrison is the fifth, and Edna, is the tenth and the youngest of Tennis Barlow's children. The Rollins Cemetery where so many of the family are buried is near their home but not on the highway, Old #66. The Berean Church is on the north side of the highway. It is near Waynesville, but it is in the country.

One source shows she married a Mr. WYRICK. Another source shows her to have married MARTIN M. SECOND, the marriage date being the same as shown of her death in Pulaski Co Missouri. I find no census for either.
