Ancestors  and  Descendants of

Arthur Knight Barlow

The  Bible  records,  estate  records and abstracts of  wills  are items  that I  came  across in my search for my own  Barlows, other information supplied by Maggie Trotter Edwards, and  Barbara Chandler,  descendants of  this family. Maggie sends information found among the records of her grandmother, Ida Lawrence Barlow Trotter:

David Barlow was a direct descendant of  Arthur Barlow, who was sent to the United States in 1584 by Sir Walter Raleigh, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth.  Arthur Barlow and his brother, Bart- holomew, in  company with  Philip Amedis, landed on the coast of  North Carolina in 1584.

Bartholomew  Barlow and  Philip Amedis returned to  England to tell of  the new colony  they had founded  near the mouth of  the Oorolet Creek,  but Arthur Barlow  remained, and there are now a number of his descendants in Edgecombe Co North Carolina, and in Quarboro.

Maggie gleaned  this  information from letters written by  her  grandmother,  Ida Lawrence Barlow Trotter in the late 1800's.

Also, from family records of  Ida Lawrence Barlow Trotter:

 1.  Benjamin Barlow  married Mildred
    2. David Barlow married Mary
           3 i.   Arthur Knight Barlow
David married 2. Lucy Knight  1782  NC 1867
            3 ii.   Peter Knight Barlow
            3 iii.  David Barlow

Lucy Knight had 8 siblings, including Arthur Knight
who married Sarah "Sally" Barlow

From my notes:

An index to the Wills of Edgecombe Co North Carolina shows:

David Barlow - Lewis Barlow - David Barlow - Benjamin Barlow

I do not have, nor have I seen copies of these wills, but they could probably answer a lot of the questions about the lineage of this family.

Data collected from Family Bibles and tombstones of Edgecombe Co NC shows:

David Barlow ... will dated November 29, 1789 ... probated 1790..

He was married to Nanny Proctor, daughter of Joshua Proctor, whose will was dated 23 January 1785 and probated May 1785.

Children of David and Nanny are:

Lewis David Benjamin Sarah / Sally Becca

The following record does fit into the family of David and Nanny

Abstracts of  Early Deeds of Edgecomb North Carolina:

Wednesday, February 03, 1790
Will of  David Barlow proved by John Batts and Wilkinson Mabry.
Inventory taken by Sally Barlow, Becca Barlow and Smith Bryan, executor.
An inventory of the estate returned.

Persons were appointed to divide the estate of  David Barlow, deceased.

 Wednesday, November 30, 1791
Lewis Barlow,  orphan of David Barlow, deceased, chose as his guardian, Smith Byran, who was also appointed guardian to David and Benjamin Barlow, orphans of the deceased.
Account of the sale of the estate of the deceased returned by Smith Bryan, executor.
Account current with the executor.

Question:
Who is Smith Byran, why is he chosen as guardians of these children?  Is he related?

January  20, 1792,  February  Court  1792
Division of money arising  from the estate among  Sarah Barlow, Robert Harper, Lewis  Barlow, David Barlow, and Benjamin Barlow.
Legacies were also paid to Lewis Barlow, David Barlow & Benjamin Barlow

Question:
Who is Robert Harper?  Is he a spouse or child of of Becca, as she is not listed in this division of money.  Is Becca deceased?

 Wednesday, March 01, 1792
Division of the estate of  David Barlow, deceased, returned.

 Thursday, February 27, 1794
Jacob Barlow appointed guardian to Lewis Barlow, orphan of David Barlow

    Question:  Who is Jacob Barlow?

Also in Abstracts of Early Deeds of Edgecomb North Carolina to confuse the record even more:

 Monday, February 05, 1787
Will of  William Pettaway proved by Briton Bryant and Jacob Proctor.
David Barlow qualified  as executor of the will.   An inventory of his estate exhibited.

Remember, David was married to Nanny Proctor, daughter of Joshua Proctor ... there is undoubtedly a relationship here

 Wednesday, August 05, 1789
David Barlow granted administration of the estate of  his mother, Elizabeth Pettaway

Question:
Who are William and Elizabeth Pettaway?

From Ida's records, we are told:

David I is the son of Benjamin and Mildred Barlow

David II is the son of  David and Lucy Knight Barlow
He married Peninah Shirley

Yet, we have a David married to Nanny Proctor and a David who has a mother named Elizabeth Pettaway.   The Pettaway can be explained as a second marriage ... but what about Elizabeth?

Two new Barlow names are introduced here to the family, those being
Henry Barlow and Samuel Barlow

WE HAVE TOO MANY DAVID'S!!    My own thoughts are that David Barlow I, who married Nanny Proctor is the more probable parents of the following lineage, though the family tells me Benjamin and Mildred are.

Estate of David Barlow

Inventory taken by Arthur Knight & Benjamin Barlow, administrators, no date

Question:   Arthur  and Sarah Knight  are the a unt and uncle of  David,  Benjamin is as probably an  uncle  as well,  but who  is Polly?   And where is Lucy?  Polly is a nickname for Mary, which brings up  more questions.

1.   Arthur Knight Barlow, "Colonel", born 30 November 1809 in Taboro North Carolina.

He married 1.) Winifred Atkinson 16 February 16, 1830 in Halifax Co North Carolina.
She was born in Halifax Co North Carolina

They lived in Edgecombe Co NC until 1848 when they moved to Hinds Co Mississippi, she died August 16, 1850 near Edward's Depot, Hinds Co Mississippi, in 39th year of age. Arthur was a planter in Mississippi.

Information from "Lost Links" states:
Arthur Knight Barlow,  born November 30, 1809,  by his first wife had but one child, James  Arthur Barlow

However, census records from 1850,  Hinds Co  Mississippi show that he had  three children, and  in  letters written  by  Ida Barlow Trotter, she mentions that she  had brothers, Thaddeus and James, though Joel must have died young, as she did not mention him.

1850 Jackson, Hinds Co Mississippi census  page 193

A.K. Barlow, age 40, born in North Carolina
son:  James A., age 17, born in North Carolina
son:  Thaddeus Barlow, age 15, born in North Carolina
son:  Joel, age 3 months, born in North Carolina
 ... no wife listed ...
Seeing that Joel is only 3 months old, and that Winifred is not listed, she may have died in childbirth

Arthur Knight Barlow married 2.) Elvira Pleasants Read in May 1851
She was born on 16 March 1829 or 1833 Madison Co Mississippi, the daughter of  John Read and
Dicey T. Duke.     She  died 16  July 1860 near Edward's Depot, Hinds Co Mississippi in her 32nd
year of  age.

John Read & Dicey T. Duke Family
Mt. Beulah, Edwards Township, Hinds County, Mississippi
by Maggie Trotter Edwards
Arthur Knight Barlow  did marry a third time, and one son was born, all according to the letters  written by  Ida Lawrence Barlow.   The wife's name was not mentioned, but records found show:

Arthur K. Barlow married Fanny R. Garry
February 08. 1861 Madison Co   bk H pg 47
or perhaps
Arthur K. Barlow married Fanny R. Garcy
January 08, 1862  Madison Co   IGI records

Elvira died in 1860, so this is likely the same Arthur.

Ida said that she and her brother went to live with their grandparents at that time, and that Arthur and his wife had one child:

vi. Benjamin Barlow

Note that two of these children have the name Batts, which leads one to believe there must be a closer
relationship between these families, than the fact Lucy had previously been married to a Batts.

This most likely will pertain to this line of Barlows and Knights.
Could this be the Benjamin who is proposed to be the father of David, who in turn is the father of  Arthur Knight Barlow?
