As webmistress of this website, I have made it my goal to try to put together for all the Barlow's who came south.  I have worked on this family several times and always became frustrated and gave up.  In August 2010, I decided to research the families from 1840 forward and leave the earlier ones to the family to sort out. There are just too many David's Benjamin's, Batts, and Knights prior to 1800 and the early 1800's.   The following lineage of Arthur Knight Barlow comes from Margaret Trotter and Barbara Chandler and from census records I have found.  Other records that I have compiled are shown as:  Barlow in Edgecombe Co North Carolina, where it seems this family originated.  If anyone would care to share more of this BARLOW family, I would be most appreciative.
A DNA donor has not been found for this line of Barlow's. The donor must be a male, and a direct descendant carrying the Barlow name in order to participate.  Please contact me if you would be interested in testing for this line.
Margaret Trotter, a descendant of this family found the following written in the papers of her grandmother, Ida Lawrence Barlow Trotter in the late 1800's:  David Barlow was a direct descendant of Arthur Barlow, who was sent to the United States in 1584 by Sir Walter Raleigh, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth.  Arthur Barlow and his brother, Bartholomew,in company with Philip Amedis, landed on the coast of North Carolina in 1584.

Bartholomew Barlow and Philip Amedis returned to England to tell of the new colony they had founded near the mouth of theOorolet Creek,  but Arthur Barlow remained, and there are now a number of his descendants in Edgecombe Co North Carolina, and in Quarboro.

GENERATION 1
1.
DAVID BARLOW died before 1812.  Conflicting information as to his parents, some say BENJAMIN, and some say DAVID and SARAH BARLOW

He married 1)  MARY [perhaps BATTS]     She apparently died shortly after the birth of Alfred Knight Barlow

He married 2) LUCY BATTS KNIGHT .  The daughter of Peter Knight and Anna Bell, she was born on 14 February 1782 in Edgecombe Co North Carolina, and died 02 July 1867.    She had previously been married to Isaac Batts.

Lucy is said to be the sister of Alfred Knight who married Sarah/Sally Barlow, who was the daughter of David Barlow and Nanny Proctor.
Child of David Barlow and Mary is:
2 i. ARTHUR KNIGHT BARLOW2, born 30 November 1809 in Tarboro, Edgecombe Co North Carolina, and died after 1860, probably in Hinds Co Mississippi.
Children of David Barlow and Lucy Knight are:
ii. PETER KNIGHT BARLOW, born c1810-1811
3 iii. DAVID BARLOW, born 06 May 1812 and died 25 May 1868

He married 1) WINIFRED ATKINSON on 16 or 25 February 1830 in Scotland's Neck, Halifax Co North Carolina. The daughter of Joel Atkinson, she was born before 1815, Edgecombe Co North Carolina, and died 16 August 1850 in Hinds Co Mississippi, either during childbirth or shortly thereafter.

He married 2) ELVIRA PLEASANTS READ on 14 May 1851, probably in Hinds Co Mississippi, though some records show the marriage took place in Edgecomb Co North Carolina.  The daughter of John Read and Dicey T. Duke, she was born 11 March 1833 in Madison Co Mississippi, and died 16 July 1860 in her 32th year, near Edwards Depot, Hinds Co Mississippi.

He married 3) FANNY R. GARRY on 08 February 1861 in Madison Co Mississippi, [bk H pg 47] or perhaps FANNY R. GARCY on 08 January 1862 in Madison Co Mississippi [IGI records]
Arthur Knight Barlow served as a Colonel in the North Carolina Militia, before moving to Mississippi in 1848.   There are several descrepancies in the early families, see Barlow in Edgecombe Co North Carolina for a collaboration of the notes I have collected.
1840 Edgecombe Co North Carolina, Dst 11, pg 39:

Information from"Lost Links" states:
Arthur Knight Barlow,  born November 30, 1809, by his first wife had but one child, James  Arthur Barlow
However, census records from 1850  Hinds Co  Mississippi show that he had  three children, and in  letters written by Ida Barlow Trotter, she mentions that she had brothers, Thaddeus and James, though Joel must have died young, as she did not mention him.
Arthur is living in the home of John Read in 1860 Hinds Co Mississippi census, his age 53.

Read Family      Mt. Beulah, Edwards Township, Hinds Co Mississippi       by: Margaret Trotter Edwards

The John Read family came to Mississippi in 1828 after spending six intervening years between Tennessee and Mississippi and Alabama. Son, Jesse and daughter, Rebecca, had been born in Greene Co Alabama. The family had also lived in Tuscaloosa Co Alabama.

In Mississippi, the Reads lived first in Madison Co, where daughter, Elvira, was born in 1829. It was not long before they moved on to Hinds Co and established a farm on land five miles from Edwards between Bolton and Edwards. Here they remained for 35 years, tending their farm, growing cotton. Their last child, Mary Elizabeth, was born there in 1835.

In 1850, their real estate was valued at $1200; in 1860; $10000 and personal estate was $19000.

John and Dicy were Methodists, worshipping at the Old Liberty Church at Edwards. Dicy was buried in the Old Hinds Co Cemetery there. She died in 1867, at 68 years of age, while on a visit to Carroll Co near Winona at her son Jesse's home.

John left the farm after Dicy's death and moved to be near Jesse in Carroll County. Winona did not become part of Montgomery Co, until 1871 when Carroll Co was divided. We do not know when John died. It was after 1871 when he applied for a War of 1812 pension at 77 years. Only two of their children were still living when John and Dicy died, John and Mary Elizabeth. John and Dicy were married over 50 years.

Arthur Knight Barlow, Elvira's husband, lived in the Read house with his new family after John left. An earlier Barlow farmhouse had been burned in the Civil War. Ida Barlow, daughter of Elvira and Arthur Knight Barlow, had gone with her grandmother to visit Jesse. She stayed on there after Dicy's death and was raised by her aunt and uncle.

In 1916, John Read's heirs received $2,160.00 for property taken or destroyed in the war.

Children of Arthur Barlow and Winifred Atkinson are:
i. JAMES ARTHUR BARLOW, born in 1833 in North Carolina
James is listed as 17 years old on the 1850 census of Hinds Co Mississippi, in the home of his father.  Also, a James A. Barlow, age 16 is enumerated as a student in Oakridge College in 1860 Claiborne Co Mississippi.  He is not found on the 1860 census with his family, however, I find a James Barlow, age 27, a lawyer, boarder in the Morgan home in Copiah Co Mississippi that may be him.  Nothing more is known of James, except that Ida writes in a letter that he "fell" on Malvern Hill, meaning he died in the Civil War.    The only records I can find for a James A. Barlow who served from Mississippi in the Civil War, shows:
James A. Barlow  1st Lieutenant  Co D, 12th MS Infantry
However, it is also shown as James P. and James R., the middle initial is not clear.
Co D, 12th MS was formed in Adams Co Mississippi,  "The Natchez Fencibles"
ii. THADDEUS BATTS KNIGHT,  born 1835 in Edgecombe Co North Carolina, and died 11 October 1858 in Hinds Co Mississippi
iii.
JOEL BARLOW, born August 1850, and may have died young, as he is not found in a 1860 census.  However, in 1870 Bolton, Hinds Co Mississippi, a 20 year old Joe Barlow lives alone as a farm laborer that may be him.  I did not locate him again in an 1880 census.
Children of Arthur Barlow and Elvira Read are:
4 iii. IDA LAWRENCE BARLOW, born 02 September 1854 in Edwards Depot, Hinds Co Mississippi, and died 12 February 1909
iv.
WALTER READ BARLOW, born 1856.  He is living in the home of John Read in 1860 Hinds Co Mississippi and again in 1870 Carroll Co Mississippi.
He married MATTIE E. CAMPBELL on 11 March 1875 in Hinds Co Mississippi, and Margaret tells us they had two children, Ida and Walter Barlow.  I could not locate any further records for Walter.
Child of Arthur Barlow and Fanny Garry/Garcy is:
v. BENJAMIN BARLOW born about 1866 in Mississippi
I was unable to find Fannie or Benjamin in an 1870 census, but did locate them in 1880 Livingston, Madison Co Mississippi. Fannie, a widow, aged 37, born in Alabama, and Benny, aged 16, born in Mississippi.  I was unable to locate him again in a 1900 census.
2.
DAVID BARLOW was born 06 May 1812. and died 25 May 1868 in Edgecombe Co North Carolina

He married PENINAH SHIRLEY on 31 January 1834, in Edgecombe Co North Carolina.  The daughter of Henry Shirley and Elizabeth Davis, she was born 25 March 1817 and died 28 May 1862.
Parts of the following information comes from:  Genealogy of the Southern Branch of the Howell Family  by Clark Howell, Editor of the Atlanta Constitution
1840 Dst 16, Edgecombe Co North Carolina, pg 360 shows David with 1 male 20<30, / 2 females <5  1 female 5<10  1 female 10<15, and 1 female 20>30
1850 Tarboro, Edgecombe Co North Carolina, shows David Barlow, 38; P. Barlow, age 33; Gracy Lane, 37; Sarah E. Barlow, 15; H. Barlow, 14; Mary L. Barlow, 11; David H. Barlow, 7; Julia S. Barlow, 5; and Lucy B. Barlow, 2; all born in North Carolina.
1860 Tarboro Edgecombe Co North Carolina  Pg 1  Pg 2  shows D. Barlow, age 48; Pennina, age 43; Aneliza, age 22; Louisa, age 21; Della, age 18; Julius, age 14; Lucey, age 12; Alice, age 9; Will L., age 5; and Thadeus, age 2, all born in North Carolina
1870 Tarboro, Edgecombe Co North Carolina shows David H. Barlow, age 27; Julius S., age 24; Alice H., 18; Lucy B., age 21; Willie L., age 15; Thadeus, age 12, Annie E. Foxhill, age 32; Patty Moore, age 22; and Henry Whitley, age 21, all born in North Carolina.
It might also be interesting to note that from 1870 and all subsequent census of Edgecombe Co North Carolina, there are several black families named Barlow who were most likely slaves of this family, as in looking through the records, they appeared to be quite a wealthy family.
Children of David Barlow and Peninah Shirley are:
i. SARAH ELIZABETH BARLOW, born 09 November 1834. and died 28 April 1868.
She married married JOSEPH W. LLOYD on 09 April 1856 in Tarboro, Edgecombe Co North Carolina
ii.
ANNIE ELIZABETH BARLOW, born 25 June 1836. and died 05 August 1917.
She married FRANK D. FOXHALL on 17 December 1850 in Edgecombe Co North Carolina
Aneliza Barlow  was in the 1860 census with her parents, and as Anne E. Foxhall in the 1870 census, living with her siblings.  The 1860 census finds F.D. Foxhall, age 24, the sheriff of Tarboro is shown as the head of S.E. Foxhall [female - age 56] whom I assume will be his mother, along with 2 other persons.  I did not locate Frank in an 1870 census, though his mother, Sarah E. Foxhall is the head of her own household, which includes a 2 year old toddler named Frank.  F.D. Foxhall is married to Mary L. in the 1880 Edgecombe Co North Carolina census, and I am curious to know if that is Annie's sister, Mary Louisa.  They are neighbors to Alice H. and her husband, Seth Speight.
iii. MARY LOUISA BARLOW, born 08 December 1838, and died 25 December 1894 in Edgecombe Co North Carolina
iv. SUSAN DELLA BARLOW, born 31 October 1840, and died 17 June 1870 in Edgecombe Co North Carolina.
v.
DAVID HENRY BARLOW, born 31 October 1843, and died 28 July 1911.  1880 Swift Creek, Edgecombe Co North Carolina, finds D.H.., age 36, newly married to Mrs. E.W. BARLOW, age 28, she was born in Virginia.  1900 Swift Creek Edgecombe Co North Carolina finds David H., age 56, EMMA/EMILINE W.., age 50, they have been married 20 years and have had no children.  1910 Rocky Mount, Edgecombe Co North Carolina show David, age 66, and Emiline, age 51, married 30 years with no children.  However, they did have nieces and a nephew living in their home for much of their married life.
