In a letter written in 1793 to his mother, he mentions his son Jesse, as well as his sisters Elizabeth, Jenny, and Rebecca, as well as his brother, Jesse. Following is a transcription of the letter, transcribed as original:
North Carolina Orange County September 28th 1793
Dear and loving Mother we gladly Embrace this opertunity to let you know that we are in good health at present only Jessy hath had a hard turn of sickness but is now recovering blessed by God for all his mercies to us. I did intend to have come to a sen you before now and to have brought you all to this part of the Contrey but I understood that you would not com with me but if Thomas Jhonston went you intended to com with him but would not com with me. I have sent by the bearer Thomas Jhonston a cap to my Mother and cotton to my sisters Elizabeth and Reback to make each of them a pair of gloves. Dear Mother this is the seventh letter we have sent to you and never received any ansre from you yet and if you do not com out now we shurely expect an anssuer or this will be the last that we intend to send to you for we shall think that you do not think worth your while to write to us we thought that you had as good an opertunity to write to us by John Barlow as you hd to write to Thomas Jhonston. Dear Mother we would be very glad you would send us word if you can conserning sister Jeney how she is and likewise Brother Jessey. So we conclude at present and all the children joins in love to you all.
Bangmen and Sarah Barlow
The address on the back of the letter under the seal is:
To
Mrs. Jane Kurbey in
Bercley County Sleppy Crick in Virginia
Thus we know that Benjamin was in Orange Co North Carolina in 1793. Tax lists for Orange Co shows a Benjamin Barlow as paying taxes in Orange Co for the years 1791, and 1792. A Benjamin Barlow is also listed in the 1790 census of Orange Co, Hillsborough District, pg 94, but an image or transcription is not available. Jan believes he was in Berkley Co Virginia around 1789 - possibly through 1800 or 1810, no census records can be found. |

JAMES MORRISON3 BARLOW (JESSE2, BENGAMEN1) was born 07 November 1814 in Kentucky, and died from dysentery, August 29. 1862 in Jacksonport, Jackson Co Arkansas, burial may be in Tol Wood Cemetery, Miller Co Missouri.
He married JULIANN ROBINETT in 18 June 1837 in Gallatin Illinois. The daughter of JOSEPH ROBINETT and CLARA NISWANGER, she was born 22 November 1817 in Indiana, and died 22 March 1902, burial in Iberia Cemetery, Richland, Miller Co Missouri. I find a Juliann Barlow married George W. Crenshaw in Adams Co Illinois in May 1868, but have no way of knowing if she is the same, I cannot locate her in any 1870 census. I also find a Julia A. Barlow married James Rame in Miller Co Missouri in 1875. No census record there either. However, some of the researchers of the Germanna Barlow's claim this Julia and J.M. are from their group, others disagree. I have not seen any records of the Germanna Barlow's having been in Miller Co Missouri. |
James M. Barlow Private, Co D 1st Battalion AR Infantry, organized July 20 1862 at Helena Arkansas, served 6 months, mustered out December 31, 1862. Widow Julia A. Barlow's pension application no. 124511 filed Apr 14 1866, certificate no. 134714. Julia Barlow is listed on the 1883 Pensioners roll as #134714. As a Civil War widow, she received $8.00 a month beginning in September 1869. Family stories say "Granny" Barlow organized and led a wagon train of the women and children from Izard Co Arkansas to Missouri to get away from the harassment of the southerners. The women's husbands and sons were in the Union Army. |

REBECCA3 BARLOW (JESSE2, BENGAMEN1) was born Abt. 1842, and died Abt. 1908 in Gallatin Co Illinois, burial in Hogan Cemetery, Gallatin Co Illinois
She married WILLIAM HAMILTON 'HAM' CREMEENS 13 April 1861 (vol M bk A pg 133) in Gallatin Co Illinois, son of REUBAN CREMEENS and BETSY TACKETT. He was born Abt. 1826 in Ohio, and died 1885 in Hardin Co Illinois. The marriage license was issued by J.B. Barger, County Clerk and the couple were married by G.W. McKeaig, Justice of the Peace. |
According to Allen Cremeens: Ham took a load of hogs down to sell to a ______ boat at Elizabethtown, something he did regularly, and the team came home pulling the wagon but Ham was not with it. Rebecca sent two sons to look for him and they checked at the boat and it was confirmed that he had sold his hogs and left, then they checked the local tavern as it was his habit to have a drink before going home, there it was confirmed he had been and gone, so the brothers split up one going east and one going west. The one going west found his father floating in ______ creek with his skull caved in and no gold on him. At this time, the family lived south of the Iron Furnace and Ham's brother Ballard brought Rebecca and children to live in Junction near the rest of the family so they could take care of them.
