From the research of  Jan McCabe Hall
with additional information and census records from Susan BARLOW Holmes

Notes from Susan:  Gallatin Co Illinois census records begin with the 1818 census, 2 Thomas are listed:
Thomas Barlow  Gallatin Co Illinois, pg 85
1 w m 21>
2 w all other
Thomas Barlow Gallatin Co Illinois, pg 93
2 w m 21>
6 w all other
We believe that the second Thomas is the father of Benjamin, and that the first may be the Thomas shown in this genealogy.  Found in Gallatin Co Records:  Nov.23, 1818 Court consisting of John Marshall, John G. Daimwood and Andrew Wilkins allowed Thomas Barlow 64, on has having produced legal evidence that he had killed two grown wolves after act passed in 1816.  The age 64, would put Thomas birth at about 1744. In 1820, Thomas Barlow, 1830, Benjamin and Jesse, 1840, John, Jesse, James and Benjamin.  Jan has determined that Thomas and Benjamin are those listed in the 1810 census of Orange Co NC, however, so has Vicki Roach in her families lineage of Thomas Barlow and Lucinda Hargis.    Other than the Benjamin found in Orange Co NC, the rest of those Barlow's following the years, seem to line up quite nicely with Vicki's genealogy.    There is a possibility of a relationship between these two families, but to determine which Thomas Barlow is indeed listed in Orange NC, more documentation will be needed.

According to Cora Smith Suermann, 1982:     Seven brothers sailed from England together and were among the early settlers of South Carolina. Some of the family served in the Revolutionary War, were in the Ozark hills, admired the area, and hoped to return there. After the war several of the family were on their way to the Ozarks but as they arrived in Bowlesville [Illinois] near the Saline River, many were too sick to carry on, thus they made camp, come to like the area, and decided to stay. These were some of the earliest settlers of that area.

1.
THOMAS1 BARLOW  died sometime before 06 March 1837, in Gallatin Co Illinois.  The name of Thomas wife is unknown, she is apparently deceased at the time of his death, as she is not mentioned in his article of agreement.   If other estate papers exist, they have not yet been found.
The first record that that holds proof that Thomas is the father of the following children comes from an article of agreement, found by Jan McCabe Hall in Gallatin Co Illinois.  Transcription as follows:
Articles of Agreement made and entered into the 4th day of March 1837 Between Benjamin Barlow, Jane Barlow, Mary Kuykendall, & Joyce Barlow, heirs of law of Thomas Barlow, deceased.  Witnesses that they severally? agree to each other that they will furnish John Barlow and Ann Barlow younger brother and sister to reside on and cultivate and have the use of the farm on which their father died being the SW 1/2? of Section five, Township Ten South Range Nine East, free of rent untill the youngest one becomes of age she being fourteen years of age on the 6th day of February last.  Witnesses our hand and each the date above written.

Known children of Thomas Barlow are:
2 i. BENJAMIN2 BARLOW (THOMAS1), born 1807 in Virginia.
ii. JANE BARLOW.  She probably did not marry, she was listed as age 45, in the 1850 census of Gallatin Co Illinois
iii. MARY BARLOW, born c1810.  She married and ROBERT KUYKENDALL on 30 October 1832 in Gallatin Co Illinois.  They divorced in 1835.   One daughter, MARIAH.
3 iv. JOYCE BARLOW, born c1816
v.
JOHN BARLOW, died 16 or 17 December 1845 in Gallatin Co Illinois.  This death date is taken from the doctor bill submitted to the estate of John Barlow, showing his attendance between 24 November - 16 December 1845 "in his last illness"   A  bill dated 17 December 1845, although partially illegible, I believe to be for something to do with the burial of John Barlow, paid by Benjamin Barlow on 02 April 1846.   Another bill dated only December 1845, is for making the coffin of John Barlow
He married ELIZABETH FRAZIER on 21 August 1845 in Gallatin Co Illinois  (Vol M   Bk 1   pg 272)    She is most likely a sister to Matthew Frazier who married Joyce Barlow.

Note from Susan:  A source of confusion has been the estate papers of John Barlow, showing the same heirs as Thomas Barlow, with the exception of "The widow, Elizabeth Barlow" After thoroughly studying these papers, I have determined that John is the son of Thomas Barlow, as mentioned in the original article of agreement, and Elizabeth his wife. Finding that John had married to Elizabeth Frazier on 21 August 1845, Gallatin Co Illinois, and died in December of that same year, not having any heirs of his own, his estate was being divided between his wife, and his siblings.    The estate probate papers list:  Benjamin Barlow, administrator .... The widow, Elizabeth Barlow, Jane Barlow, Mary Kuykendall, Joyce Frazier, Ann Barlow and Benjamin Barlow, heirs at law of John Barlow, deceased.     The papers, several pages long, will not be transcribed her, but can be viewed by clicking on the following link.                 Estate Papers of John Barlow

Children of SARAH ANN BARLOW and BENJAMIN BARLOW are:
i.
JOSEPHINE BARLOW, born November 1837, Bowlesville Twp., Gallatin Co Illinois.   She married a HARRIS.  She is listed as a Harris in 1880 census, and a widowed Harris in 1900 Gallatin Co Illinois.   I could not find her in an 1870 census.
ii.
REBECCA JANE BARLOW, born August 1839, Bowlesville Twp., Gallatin Co Illinois.  She apparently never married, living with her sister, Josephine in 1900, and with John F. Barlow in 1910.
4 iii.
THOMAS JEFFERSON BARLOW, born 21 October 1840, Gallatin Co Illinois; and died 25 February 1909, Gallatin Co Illinois
5 iv. MARY E. BARLOW, born c1843, Bowlesville Twp, Gallatin Co Illinois.
v.
SARAH MINERVA BARLOW, born c1851, and probably died between 1880 and 1884.
She married WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON MARTIN, 02 February 1871 in Gallatin Co Illinois.  (vol M bk B pg 21)   In 1880, they had no children.
Sarah died before 1884, at which time her cousin, Almar Harris has married Wm. Henry Martin.    He too, apparently died before 1892, or he and Almar divorced, as Almar married Lively Allen Cremeens at that time.
v.
SILVESTER TUCKER BARLOW, born c1852.  I am not at all sure he is their son, he may be a Tucker.

Children of JOYCE BARLOW and MATTHEW FRAZIER are:

ii. FRANCIS MARION FRAZIER married WILDA
iii. EZEKIAL FRAZIER
Children of JOYCE BARLOW and JOHN MARTIN are:   Based on the date of marriage, I will assume Martha, William, Thomas, Susan and John are from a previous marriage of John.    Thomas G. Martin and wife, Martha are also living next door to Samuel Brinkley in 1880.  (In 1870, I believe the Thomas Martin, age 23 living with Alfred Barlow is the same)   Henry Martin, probably the same as William H., age 26, is living with Benjamin and Sarah Barlow in 1870    -- I just realized that this is probably the same William Henry Harrison Martin who married Sarah Minerva Barlow, and then Almar Harris in 1884.
iv. GEORGE W.3 MARTIN
v.
ALFRED B. MARTIN, perhaps the same as AARON STOUT   In 1880 Gallatin Co Illinois, he is age 20, and married to NANCY J., age 15.  They live next door to Samuel Brinkley.

She married WILLIAM 'BILL' SMITH 30 March 1898 in the residence of T.J. Barlow, Bowlesville Twp., Gallatin Co Illinois.  The son of WILLIAM SMITH and REBECCA POGUE, he was born 02 October 1873 in Bowlesville, Gallatin Co Illinois, and died 09 January 1947 in Bowlesville, Gallatin Co Illinois, burial in Hogan Cemetery, Gallatin Co Illinois

Bill was born in October after his father had died in September, and sice his mother had always desired a son named William, he was the third son to be named "William"--the other two having died in infancy. His mother had remarried after the death of his father and they continued to live on the family farm in Bowlesville Twp., so this is where Wm. was reared. He spent his entire life on the farm which his father had purchased in August 1872, inheriting the farm when his mother died and reared his family there. The farm was one of the larger farms of southern Illinois on which watermelons, corn, animals, etc. were raised with success. His brothers and children also had farms in the area adjoinging or nearby the "homeplace".

William was a member of the Ringgold Cumberland Presbyterian Church since 1929 and his funeral was held there Saturday morning with Rev. L.L. Gullett as officiating mininster with internment following in Hogan Cemetery.

Granny Cabe was a big woman, she was over 6 feet tall and weighed somewhere around 250 pounds. She worked hard all her life, first having children and taking care of them and then in later years she went to town and took care of other people's children and cleaned their houses.
Granny like to read and was an excellent cook. She loved the color red and wore it a lot. I look like her, though I'm not quite as tall as she was.
Mom said Dad went to work for the CCC when he was a young man and worked down in Pope County. He would come home on the weekends and bring his clothes in and she would wash them up and iron them for him before he went back to work. He only wore white shirts with his work pants!!!!
I remember Grandpa only as a old man. He was very gentle when I knew him and always called me Jenny Kay.   Mom tells me he was really almost mean to my Dad as he was growing up, this may have come from him trying to make a living scabbling in an old slope mine and also he drank a lot. Grandpa was a man of average height, about 5'10 or 11" and in his youth he had black hair. He had hazel colored eyes (my dad and Uncle Ron had eyes exactly the color of his) I never heard him curse (that doesn't mean he didn't).
When the WPA came along he went to work for that and learned to drive a bulldozer. From that point until he retired in the late 1950's he worked for the County Highway Department. He is said to have been one of the best operators most had ever seen. He also dug ponds etc. for people.
I remember going to Pa and Ma Cabies house just north of Hogan Cemetery (their property adjoined Hogan) on Sunday for dinner and Grandma would have fried chicken and all the trimmings (she was some cook). Then after lunch she would make home made ice cream. Uncle Bob and Uncle Ron would always save their chicken legs so they could dip them in their ice cream and eat it that way.
Their house was an old log cabin, this was part of what was called log row in Bowlesville. Their was one big room with a bed for Grandpa and Grandma in it a loft for the kids and a lean-to on the back that was the kitchen. They never had running water till they moved to town. You had to walk behind the house, what it seem to a child like a mile, but was probably only about 1/4 mile to a spring and carry water to the house. You passed Uncle Claud and Uncle Lawrence (Pen)'s house, which was just a one room shack on the way to spring. In the summer Grandma's house always smelled so good because they had honeysuckle growing up over the front porch and even up on the roof.
Grandpa had a pond out behind the house and there were a couple of sheds. When you turned off the Township road to go back to their house you had to cross a bridge over a big ditch to get there. They always had dogs that ran out to meet you.
While Grandpa worked for the county he always went out and got drunk on Friday and Saturday nights and then would drive home. Dad said he could drive straight better when he was drunk that when he was sober. He only ran off in the ditch on the way home 1 time in all those years. When he retired he quit drinking and I guess he never took another drink.   Grandpa turned his life over to the Lord in those later years.

The Doctor that delivered Dad was John Morrison and he was born at 4:40 p.m. Grandma was 17 and Grandpa was 20.
My Dad was the most honest man I have ever met!! He was well respected in the whole county. You still, in the year 2000, mention his name here and people remember him fondly.
Dad was a farmer. He was in World War II, he was a Reconnaissance Car Crewman, and was also a radio operator. His medals were American Service Medal European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal. He entered active service November 24, 1942 at Chicago, IL and separated from the service December 1, 1945. He attained the rank of Tec 4 he was in the CAV arm of service in the 104th RCN Troop.
He told us the story of driving at night with your headlights blacked out except for a pinhole to drive by. He also told of going into this town (and his group was in the first wave after initial fighting, before mopup operations began) to set up communications and finding donuts still hot on the table. He said they fell on those and went to eating like they were starved and after finishing they worried that they could have been poisoned!!! Those were the only stories he ever told me about the war.
Dad was a tall man, about 6'3" with black hair (when young) and going bald or mostly that way by the time he was in his thirties.
