John Barlow, son of Branson
This lineage was researched and compiled from census records by Susan BARLOW Holmes; the information on the Cader and Zachariah Worley family comes from Carol Scott. This John is not proven to be the son of Branson, nor that the family who were living in Clarke Co Alabama, but after having traced Mary Ann Elizabeth Barlow and Zachariah Worley who were married in Clarke Co Alabama in 1844 to Morehouse Parish, and then following the movements of their family, including their only surviving son who is found living in the home of William Barlow, son of this John and Sarah, it seems pretty evident, at least to me, that they are the would be the same. Further research will need to be done to prove without a doubt, the lineage. You will also note that this family lived in Morehouse Parish Louisiana, as well as Ashley and Desha Co Arkansas, all very near to the James Barlow family, known son of Branson Barlow.

JOHN BARLOW, son of Branson Barlow, was born c1798 in North Carolina, and died before 1860 in Louisiana.
He married SARAH. She was born c1800 in Georgia, and probably died between 1860 and 1870, in Louisiana |

I don't believe that this is Branson's son, John, who would have only been 18
at the time of this census. It may be a brother of Branson' or perhaps an uncle. |

is living with her son, William Census
Image
From the dates of the children's
birth, the last child shown to be 6 years old,
and born in Alabama, we can determine that John
and Sarah moved to Louisiana between 1845-1850.
I believe that after their father's death
in 1839, John and James had no binds
to Alabama, and came to Louisiana, perhaps
with a wagon train, as we see many, many families
around them from Alabama. |
|
| |
| Known children of John and Sarah are: |
| 3. |
MARY ANN ELIZABETH BARLOW3, born c1825-26 in Alabama. Mary and William may be twins, though it has not been proven
that she is the daughter of John and Sarah, but it seems
quite likely that she is. |
| 4. |
WILLIAM J. BARLOW, born c1825-26 in Alabama |
| ** |
ELIZABETH BARLOW, born c1834 in Alabama |
| ** |
JAMES BARLOW, born c1838 in Alabama. I was unable to locate him after 1860. It is possible he was a casualty of the Civil War, though I find no record of his service. |
| ** |
SARAH BARLOW, born c1840-41 in Alabama. |
| ** |
ELIZA BARLOW, born c1843-44 in Alabama |
| 3. |
MARY ANN ELIZABETH BARLOW3, whom I believe to be the daughter of John and Sarah Barlow, was born c1825-26 in Alabama, and died between 1860-70 in Morehouse Parish Louisiana.
She married ZACHARIAH FINLEY WORLEY on January 13, 1844 in Clarke Co Alabama, the affair witnessed by Lewis Barlow. (Dodd, Jordan R., compilation, Early American Records, 1809-1920) Lewis may have been the brother of John, also a son of Branson, or it is possible she had an older brother named Lewis who witnessed the marriage. It may be that John and Sarah had already moved to Louisiana. Mary's age is shown as 18, while Zachariah is 27. Born January 13, 1817, and dying in 1857, Zachariah Worley was the son of Cader Worley and Malinda Norris Finley, who were neighbors of John and Lewis Barlow in the 1830 and 1840 census of Clarke Co Alabama. |

Zach is deceased as are the three
children who were listed in the 1850 census. According to
the Worley family genealogy, Zachariah and
Mary had 11 children, only one of them survived
to adulthood, that being Charles. |

Susan
BARLOW Holmes writes:
Originally I had thought that Mary
Ann Elizabeth Barlow was the daughter
of Lewis Barlow, this based on the fact that he named
a "Mary Ann Elizabeth Barlow" in his
will of 1849, and the fact that
a Lewis Barlow had witnessed the marriage of Mary
and Zachariah Worley. However, after corresponding with
Carol Scott, a Worley family researcher, we determined
that Lewis daughter, was mothered by Martha Everett,
who would have only been about 5 years of age at the
time of this Mary's birth. We determined that
his Mary, probably
died shortly after he did, since she is not listed
on the 1850 census of Clarke Co Alabama with Martha.
OF FURTHER INTEREST
Carol Scott writes:
"My 3-gr-grandmother was Mary
Elizabeth Ann Barlow ... according to her granddaughter (my g-grandmother), was a Choctaw
- the daughter of a Chief White Feather...
and was "given" the name Barlow ...
According to 2 of my cousins, the answer is in the
files (on a CD) at any Mormon Library. They say they
had the file open and saw Mary Elizabeth Ann
Barlow's Indian name - as well as the Indian name of
her father .. but their time on the computer was
up and they were cut off ... they never
got the chance to go back and look for it again."
She states further:
"I still don't know what to do about the
story of my Mary Ann Elizabeth Barlow having been "given" the
name of the people
on whose farm she was living ... or about her 'real' father
being Chief White Feather.
From the records of Murphy Zack Worley, son of
Charles Alexander Worley:
Back in 1911-1912, there
was a tall dark man came from Meridian, Mississippi. He
hired a horse and buggy in Bastrop. He came looking
for our father, Charles Alexander Worley. His name
was Alexander P. Powell. He
was carrying a large book with the record of my father. He
was entitled to some land in Oklahoma in the Indian
Territory that the government had given
the Indians. Later, it became rich in oil. My
daddy corresponded with this man. After my daddy
died, we corresponded with
a lawyer that was supposed to be representing
the Indians. His office was in Philadelphia
Mississippi, but somehow we could never get enough
to prove our claim. We
Worley children were entitled to quite a lot of wealth
on both sides of the family, but
unfortunately the proof was done away with or there weren't
ever any records.
Carol recently discovered that in 1916, Alexander
Powell was arrested for impersonating a government
official, but died before he served time, so that leaves
even a further thread to unravel. She
suggests ... it could be that it was Mary
Ann Elizabeth's mother, Sarah, who was the Choctaw, since Alexander
P. Powell was targeting KNOWN Melungeon families in East Texas
and Louisiana, many of whom had already applied
for "Indian" status. Since many of Powell's
family members were attorneys and judges, it
is possible that he had access to the
names of those who were applying for Indian status
and hatched his "scam" from there.
Footnote: While Carol agrees with me
as that this lineage appears to be accurate, she wants
to still investigate
the possibility of Mary being the daughter
of Chief White Feather. If anyone has
further information on any of these families, please
contact both Carol and I. |

WILLIAM J. BARLOW, son of John and Sarah Barlow, was born c1825-26 in Alabama, and was living in Morehouse Parish Louisiana by 1850. He probably died between 1874-1880.
He married JANE (perhaps Jane Ray), c1849-50, at which time, they are found living in the home of Elizabeth Ray, whom I believe to be her mother, and next door to John and Sarah Barlow. |

she said her father (Rayburn) never spoke of his
