Mary Barlow, daughter of Branson

MARY BARLOW2 (Branson1) daughter of Branson Barlow, was born c1808-1810 in South Carolina, and died between 1870-1880, probably in Clarke Co Alabama.

She married ELIJAH PHILLIPS c1829.  According to family lore, Elijah went to California in search of gold about 1848-49 and was killed, leaving Mary a widow with 7 children.

SARAH REBECCA PHILLIPS, born c1829 in Alabama, and died before 1900, probably in Clarke Co Alabama.  I assume her middle name is Rebecca from the 1880 census, though Rebecca may be a second or perhaps third wife.   

MARIAH/MARIA A. or C. PHILLIPS, born c1840 in Alabama.
She married WILLIAM H. DOYLE on 02 January 1868 in Clarke Co Alabama. (Jordan R. Dodd: Early American Marriages: Alabama, 1800 to 1920)   In 1870, they live in Gosport, Clarke Co Alabama, no children, but Permelia Presnall is living with them.       Census Image       I could not locate them in 1880 and forward

CHARLES WOODLEY PHILLIPS was born April 07, 1839 in Clarke Co Alabama, and died May 11, 1930 in Garland Co Arkansas, burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, just outside Hot Springs, Garland Co Arkansas.

He married 1) MELISSA LAWRENCE on March 28, 1866 in Clarke Co Alabama (Hunting for Bears, courthouse records)   She probably died before 1878, perhaps in childbirth.
He married 2) NANCY JANE SMITH c1878.    She was born August 31, 1849, and died April 13, 1933, burial with Charles. (You will note that Jane Smith, age 16, was living with Charles mother as domestic help in 1870, when Charles was married to Melissa.  Her brother, Wiley Smith, age 14, was in Mary's home also.) -- Elijah W. and Nancy J. Smith were living with their 52 yr old father, Elijah Smith in the 1860 census of Clarke Co Alabama, he apparently a widower, born in Washington Co Alabama)

Ethel Bradshaw <bradshaw1st@sbcglobal.net>  writes:  Charles and Jane Phillips came to Ozark Arkansas in a covered wagon around 1881, then next moved to Pike Co Arkansas, and finally moving to Garland Co Arkansas around 1900.  They had a general store there, and gave land for a church and cemetery. Charles did preach some.

CHARLES M. PHILLIPS, born December 1882 in Arkansas. He married VESTA A. COUCH, daughter of Edgar M. and Emma Couch.  They removed to California.  He is buried there, she in Garland Co Arkansas.    I did not locate them in any census records

NANCY A. PHILLIPS, born June 1887 (Tombstone transcription shows 1889) in Arkansas, and died 1974.
She married WILLIAM H. 'WILL' CHAMBERS.  Probably the son of Robert W. and Mary E. Chambers, he was born 1887, and died 1969.  Both are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Garland Co Arkansas. Also buried in Pleasant Hill with them is Effie Jane Chambers, born December 17, 1917, and died February 15, 1923. (Is she their daughter?)  I was not able to locate them in census records until 1930 when they live next door to her parents, and have one son, Eugene, age 8.    Census Image

ALABAMA 'ALLIE / ALLA' PHILLIPS, born March 15, 1897, and died April 29, 1978.
She married CHESTER MORPHEW.  He was born April 04, 1897, and died August 26, 1978.  Both are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Garland Co Arkansas.
They had 4 children, one still living.(Ethel Bradshaw)  

ATHIE JANE PHILLIPS, born February 17, 1909.    She married CLARENCE JOHN BRADSHAW.  He was born March 22, 1908, and died January 16, 1983, burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Garland Co Arkansas. 

WINNIE OLA PHILLIPS, born June 28, 1921 in Garland Co Arkansas, a nd died September 18, 1977 in Garland Co Arkansas.
She married 1) DELMER HICKS  2) RAY CORDER   He was born December 04, 1923, and died December 17, 1982.  Both he and Winnie are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Garland Co Arkansas.

Mrs. Winnie Ola “Mickey” Corder, 56, died Sept. 18. She was a life resident of Hot Springs. Survivors include her husband, Ray Corder of Hot Springs; two sons, Carl R. Hicks and Mark Corder, both of Hot Springs; one brother, Tom Phillips of Grand Prairie, Tex.; three sisters, Mrs. Athie Bradshaw and Syble Lucas, both of Hot Springs, and Alma Williams of Mabelvale; her mother, Mrs. Roxie Phillips of Hot Springs and six grandchildren. Services were held on September 22 in Gross Mortuary Chapel and burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
