Wanda Mulkey say:  John B. Barlow died in Leesburg Virginia of lung disease on March 28, 1862, while serving in the Civil War. His military papers give his description: 28 years old, born in Clarke Co Alabama, 5' 8" tall, dark complexion, black eyes, and black hair.

**
MARGARET M. BARLOW, born c1835-1840.  She apparently married a CLAIRBAIN according to an 1852 deed, however, in the McRee family genealogy, they give her the surname WILLIAMSON, saying she had also moved to Texas.  Using soundex, I have been unable to locate her on any census record under either name.  Wanda Mulkey states:  She later married JOHN P. LANE in Clarke Co Mississippi and they lived in Choctaw Co Alabama. (I was unable to locate this family in census records either)
6. RHODA ANN BARLOW, born September 07, 1841 in Clarke Co Mississippi.

SARAH ELIZABETH BARLOW3, (William2, Branson1) was born c1828-1829 in Alabama, and died after August 1900.

She married WYATT B. WILLIAMSON, January 05, 1848, Clarke Co Mississippi.  (Deed Book D, Clarke Co Mississippi)  He died November 04, 1866 in Greene Co Mississippi, possibly a Civil War casualty. Wanda Mulkey has a copy of Sarah's pension application dated August 04, 1900, that says she is living in Jasper Co Mississippi with her daughter, Olivia Jordon.  (The 1900 census shows that Rufus and Olivia do live in Jasper Co, but at that time, June 1900... Sarah is not enumerated in the census.   I could not locate Sarah in any 1900 census.

She married BENJAMIN GREEN AVANT, between 1848-1852, probably in Alabama.  He was born February 1818 in South Carolina, and died between 1905-1910 in Bell, Temple Co Texas.
Wanda Mulkey states: I think the death dates on Benjamin G. Avant is wrong, because I know where Omiatt and he went to after Kenny Mack Avant died. Omiatt went to their daughter Julia Ann McLendon, and B.G Avant went to live with daughter, Maggie Griffin, because no one person could afford to keep both of them together.

In April 1861, the 13th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers, accepted Daniel James Barlow as an enlisted private. Pierce Springs was home and his occupation was shoemaker. He was 23 years old and single. He journeyed to Quitman, a short distance from Pierce Springs to be mustered in to Captain D.R. McIntosh's Company. The 13th Regiment Mississippi Infantry was organized in May 1861 of companies which had previously been in the state service and mustered in to the Confederate service for twelve months. About April 1862, the company was reorganized and Daniel James Barlow was commissioned to 2nd Lieutenant. By September 1863, he was promoted to Captain. He fought in many great battles, of which some were Manassas on 21 July 1861, Leesburg on December ll, 1862, Sharpsburg on May 03, 1863, and at Fredricksburg. Two battles were fought at Gettysburg on July 02, 1863, and on July 03, 1863. At one of the Gettysburg battles, the flag boy (color guard) was shot down, and Daniel grabbed the flag before it hit the ground and marched on. Other battles were Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and two battles at Knoxville, two at Spotsylvania, and Charleston and many other skirmishes.

On the morning report, November 16, 1864, 1rst Division Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond Virginia, shows Daniel Barlow on sick leave. He had been wounded. He was with Humphreys Brigade on November 15th, when a mini-ball lodged in his hip which he was to carry for the rest of his life. The war was over on April 09, 1865, when Lee surrendered his weary Southerners to Grant in a farmhouse near the village of Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. Daniel was given an honorable discharge and he headed home.

The dates and battles above are recorded in the State Archives of History of Jackson, Mississippi and the National Archives of History in Washington DC.

Captain Daniel James Barlow returned home from the Civil War mentally active, but physically depleted.

Being an astute person and highly educated he returned home to Pierce Springs to teach school, which was a lot less physical than farming the family farm. There he resumed his aquaintance with a pretty young student, Charlotte Ann McRee. Charlotte had grown up and become quite a young lady while Daniel was serving in the war. Daniel and Charlotte fell in love and after posting $200.00 bond, and publishing a wedding ban, they were married on January 23, 1867.

After establishing a home and collecting some of his inheritance from his father, William Barlow's estate, and his grandfather, Branson Barlow's Estate in Alabama, he settled down to farming.

Great changes in farming had come about with the freeing of slaves. Wages had to be paid and a new way of life began. The reconstruction of the South was to play a large part in their lives. New frontiers were opening up and new plans were being made by a large part of the population. After three or four years of hard work and not progressing as fast as he had planned, Daniel and Charlotte decided they would be a part of the population to move on to new areas and a new beginning. Many friends and relatives had lost their homes and lives, so leaving Pierce Springs Mississippi where they had both grown up, was easier for them than some people.

After much discussion and sharing of information on different places to resettle Texas was decided upon to be the new home. Land in Texas was selling for 50 cents to $2.00 an acre, depending on the location, and millions of acres were waiting to be cleared and crops planted. Their wagon of 26 loads of people and goods arrived in East Texas in the early 1870's. Many families had small children. Charlotte and Daniel's first child was named for their fathers. He was born in May 1868 and named William Neavels.

Their union produced 6 boys and 5 girls. There were two miscarriages. Young William Neavels made the long trip from Mississippi like any other young child in those days. The wagon train of people spread out over the eastern part of Texas.

Daniel and Charlotte settled in Pine Hill, Texas. Pine Hill is near Carthage and Henderson and Beckville, Texas. Supplies were needed for many people moving to Texas at that time, so Daniel established a general merchandise store. He became a part owner of a cotton gin (Solon Holt Gin) and postmaster for several years. Daniel's store was one of the finest and carried the most needed items of any store in the area. Many trips were made to buy goods demanded by the rural life of the period.

While Daniel was busy with his business, Charlotte was again a mother. Both the family and fortune grew rapidly. The children grew up spoiled and pampered by a loving mother. Discipline was strong and strict from the father. The children's meals were served in the kitchen, and Daniel's meals were served alone in the dining room. A black man servant that grew up with Daniel, attended his needs and served him all his life. Daniel died February 27, 1897, leaving all his assets to his loving wife, Charlotte, because he loved her so much.

The oldest son, William Neavels became a doctor and practiced in the same area all his life where he also operated a drug store. He married pretty Ida Kirksey and had several children. Charlotte and the remainder of the family lived in the family home until the death of the youngest son, Sim in 1906. The second son, Julius Beecher helped raise the younger children because Daniel became confined to a wheelchair for several years before his death. Julius Beecher and his brother Deen Swift helped run the family store, then liquidated the merchandise by going from farm to farm selling what was needed in each area. In doing so, theyvisited many old friends and relatives. Several trips were made to visit aunts and uncles that were seldom seen, and to renew friendships with cousins made in earlier days.

Daniel's sister, Margaret Williamson had moved to Texas and so had his sister, Rhoda Ann McLendon.

Rhoda Ann had 13 children and it was a pleasure to swap secrets and tid-bits of everyday life. They lived near Yarrelton Texas. Kenneth McLendon was a teacher and the Justice of Peace and arbitrator among other things. Charlotte's brother, Milton Brown McRee had moved to Texas. He first worked on a large ranch at Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, hunted buffalo in Indian territory as well as west Texas near where Benjamin is now located. He eventually married and settled on the east side of the Trinity River in the Dido community about 20 miles north of Ft. Worth, Texas. Dean Swift and Julius Beecher visited Milton Brown McRee in 1908. Milton's daughter, Oakley Alice still had a vivid memory of the looks of each of her cousins. She lives today in Ft. Worth (1983), 89 yrs. old.

Daniel James and Charlotte McRee Barlow had 13 children. Eleven grew to adulthood and married. Lucretia died as a toddler and Sim died at age 16 in 1906. After Sim died, Charlotte lived with her married daughters until her death in 1916.   Both Daniel and Charlotte are buried in the Methodist Cemetary in Pine Hill, Texas, as well as several members of the family; including the youngest child, Sim and the oldest son, William Neavels and his wife Ida. Each child of Daniel and Charlotte's married and lived their lives in East Texas. At this time only Julius Beecher's wife, Laura Elizabeth is still living. She will be 90 years old January 27, 1984. She lives near her two oldest children and two youngest children in Pleasant Hill, California.

Charlotte listed Wm N. correctly as her son, and single, though he lives next door, married, and he gives his age and date of birth incorrectly!

I could not locate her in 1910.
