Descendants of

Henry Barlow & Harriet Buckley
Manchester England, Passaic Co New Jersey, with family to New York, Michigan, Texas, Georgia & Missouri

Geralyn Barry

The BARLOWs I'm researching were more recent immigrants to the USA. They came to Paterson, Passaic Co New Jersey from Manchester England about 1863.

Generation 1

Henry BARLOW b: England abt 1817
He married Harriet BUCKLEY b: England abt 1836

Sons:

2. Edward BARLOW b: England abt 1857

3. Robert Henry BARLOW b: England abt 1863

4. George BARLOW b: Feb 1870 Paterson New Jersey, died young

Generation 2

Edward BARLOW married 1. Margaret______about 1878

They lived in Paterson and had these children all born in New Jersey:

5. Harry BARLOW b: abt November 1879

6. Hattie BARLOW b: abt February 1884

7. Edward BARLOW b: abt October 1885

8. Thomas BARLOW b: abt August 1887

9. May BARLOW b: abt May 1890

Edward BARLOW married 2. Annie ______ about 1896.

They lived in Paterson and had 2 children that I know of born there:

1. Lettie BARLOW b: abt July 1897

2. Annie BARLOW b: abt August 1899

I have not traced this family much and don't know what happened to them

Robert Henry BARLOW married Margaret HARROLD (my grandfather's aunt) in Paterson in 1886

They had children, as shown in Margaret's 1940 obituary

10. Edward H. BARLOW b: abt January 1888 (of Clifton New Jersey, formerly of Georgia)

He was married to Helen ______ from Pennsylvania.
They were living in Detroit, Michigan in the 1920 census with their daughter Helen, age 5, b: Michigan.

The obit from 1940 mentioned Helen PEARCE of Royal Oak Michigan as a granddaughter,
and also a great-granddaughter. She may have been the wife of Allen Richard PEARCE of
Detroit. No more information on them, though I've done quite a bit of searching.

11. Major Robert Henry BARLOW, Jr. b: abt June 1889 (of Tyler Texas)

My aunt told me that this fellow was in the border patrol and that he married a woman from NY state and went to live there after he retired.

12. Harold John BARLOW b: 06 February 1892 in Paterson New Jersey (of St. Louis, Missouri)

I found the WWI US Draft Registration Card for Harold John BARLOW. It was filed  under Paterson, Passaic Co New Jersey, but has on it the stamp and signature of the  County Commissioner's Office of Washington Co Pennsylvania.

My elderly aunt said Harold owned a circus, but didn't know which one. This is the first time I've found a name for the circus - it looks like he does not own it at this point. I will try to find out more about this circus and if he stayed with it or worked for others later. I wonder if he was just there in Donora with the circus for a performance when he was required to register for the draft or whether Donora was the home base for this circus. I discovered that there is a newspaper for the area called The Claysville Recorder available on micro- film at the public library in Washington Pennsylvania - it might have a notice about a circus coming to town. I have read that the Circus World Museum & Research Center in Baraboo, Wisconsin has lots of information on circuses from all over the world. Someday I would like to visit there and see if I can find anything about Harold Barlow.

Note from Susan:
Based on the letter at Barlow Circus, I doubt that any further information can be found at the Wisconsin Museum

The Paterson address he gave on his draft registration was not his parents' address; it was one of the homes that belonged to his mother's family - the HARROLDs. My aunt thought that Harold never married, but did not know what became of him. His mother's obituary in April 1940 said Harold was "of St. Louis Missouri".

I found mention in Billboard Magazine of letters waiting for Harold J. Barlow in St. Louis, so I guess that was his home base for his travels with the circus at that time.

13. Helen Margaret BARLOW died age 3

Notes from Susan:

I found these items that might be of interest:

Barlow Circus   This circus travelled primarily in Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas, the owners being R.H. and E.D. Barlow. I wonder if  R.H. might be Robert Henry.

The Barlow Trio   Curiously, the members of this family includes a Sarah Barlow of New York, born 1861, information from a death certificate, I wonder if she might be a daughter of Henry and Harriet Buckley Barlow, perhaps the New York is in error, being her home, rather than her birthplace.

The following obituary might indicate that family members are still living in the New Jersey area.

                                New Jersey Obituary:

BARLOW, Robert B., age 66, died Jun 25, 1981
Born in Paterson NJ. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Frances Jones Barlow; 2 sons, James B. Barlow & Robert B. Barlow, Jr.; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Jane Ballou Lawson and 8 grandchildren.
(note the spelling of Margaret's last name, is this a transcription error?)
