Jesse Barlow and Lucy Wills

Descendants of the Isle of Wight Virginia Barlow's

Maurice Crocker

Barlow family data from the research of Myrtis Crocker Handley, now deceased, and updated by several cousins in the Crocker lineage.

Reference: Isle of Wight, Virginia by Lundie W. Barlow     Historical Southern Families by John Boddie pages 21-24 volume 11

The Barlow family in this book goes back to Edward Barlow in 1560.

My proof goes back to Thomas Barlow, born about 1702 and died about 1749.

Will Book V page 196, December 03, 1748: Will of Thomas Barlow names wife Martha Carrell and a son Jesse Barlow

See also: Will Book 7 page 41    -  Does anyone have a copy of this?

Jesse Barlow was born about 1740 and died about 1779, the father of our g3grandmother, Lucy Barlow. He lived in Warrick Co Virginia and later in Isle of Wight Virginia.

He seemed to be engaged in business ventures of some nature that kept him in almost constant litigation and encumbered his estate for about 16 years after his death. As a resident of Warrick Co Virginia in 1770, he sold the Piney Point Plantation, inherited from his father, Thomas Barlow.

The next year he bought land in the same locality which had belonged to his father-in-law. In 1773 he purchased an adjoining tract bequeathed by his father, Thomas, to a nephew William Carrell.  Thereafter, Jesse became a resident of Isle of Wight Virginia.

In 1776, he sold all of his land in Isle of Wight to a neighbor, Richard Hardy, some three years before his death.

Jesse's wife was Lucy Wills, daughter of Thomas Wills of North Hampton North Carolina.    Lucy died some time before Jessie.

Known children of Jesse and wife Lucy were:

Thomas Barlow      Benjamin Barlow      Jesse Barlow      Willis Barlow      Frances/ Fanny Barlow      Lucy Barlow

Order book 1772-1780, page 511 Isle of Wight, Virginia April 06, 1780 in chancery: The infant orphans of Jesse Barlow, deceased, against Thomas Barlow, son and heir of Jesse Barlow, deceased continue for the court complaint bill.

May 02, 1783 in chancery:

Benjamin, Jesse, Willis, Fanny and Lucy Barlow, by their guardian, against Thomas Barlow, heir at law of Jesse Barlow.
Dismissed: Settled outside court, the plaintiffs not furthur prosecuting

Thomas Barlow was their brother who fought in the Revolutionary War

Other notes: According to Lundie Barlow, George Barlow was the father of Thomas Barlow, born about 1670 and died about 1718. He was married to Sarah Clay, daughter of John Clay. Sarah inherited The Piney Point plantation which was passed down to Jesse.  It was located on Lawn Creek.

Study Will  1718 and 1729.   If anyone wants to join any Colonial Society there should be proof there.

Drury Crocker and Lucy Barlow

Mr. and Mrs. William Sirmon provide the marriage and will information following:

Isle of Wight, Virginia marriages shows Drue "Drury" Crocker married Lucy Barlow on February 12, 1793 by Reverend William Hubbard, consent of Anthony Crocker and George Barlow. The surety being Benjamin Hicks. Anthony Crocker being the father of Drue Crocker, George Barlow was of some kin but not her brother or father because her father, Jesse was deceased.

Note from Susan: From information I have gathered, it appears that Drury may have been married to Lucy's sister, Frances/Fanny first.  Perhaps she died, and Drury in turn married Lucy.

Drury and Lucy moved from Isle of Wight Virginia to Dallas Co Alabama in the 1820's with their children except two sons, George and William who are believed to have stayed in Virginia.

Drury Crocker made his will on 09 July 1825 and it appears in Will Book #1, page 41, in Dallas County, and states that he was living at that time on the waters of White Oak Creek.

He appointed his wife Lucy executor of his will and named his children as follows: George, William, Carey, Hazzard/Howard?, Crawford, Wilson, Monroe, Louisa, Hallier, Mary, Anne, and Cadmus.

The will was witnessed by John Rurden, Page R. Windham, and John Moseley

We find that Lucy being  the  head of  household after  Drury's death in the 1820's, bought the west 1/2 of  NW 1/4 of  section 22, Township 14 Range 10 on October 9, 1828 for  $99.69,  certificate 3776  in Alabama archives and history land sales book.

Lucy Crocker purchased land in Dallas County Alabama on July 01, 1829

If anyone knows of a relationship between John Barlow of Dallas Co Alabama, and the Isle of Wight Barlows, please contact me,  Susan BARLOW Holmes.  John did have a daughter, Frances. M. who married a Crocker, according to information I have been able to obtain, but no documentation is found.  Thus far, I have not found any further information on them.
