English Generation

A.
 
Edward Barlow,  Esquire, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, and Southampton, England, was born in 1560 and was descended
       from the Barlows seated at Barlow, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancashire, England.

It has been said that his father was Arthur Barlow, who died in 1620, and that his mother was Abigail Caddie, but these relationship are not proven.

He died and was buried on March 19, 1619/20, at St. Michael, Southampton.

Edward Barlow was admitted a Burgess of Southampton in 1593 and thereafter served all the municipal offices, being Mayor in 1607, and Alderman and Keeper of the Keyes in 1609 and later.

He was a merchant adventurer engaged in foreign trade and dealing in textiles.

He lived "neare Bislegate within the said towne and at the foote of Simnel Streete" in the parish of St. Michael, Southampton


   
   Edward Barlow  married  Joan Rishton  (or perhaps Rushton) on December 20, 1592, in Sussex. 
       She was a daughter of William Rishton, Gentleman, of Almodington, Sussex. 
       She married second John Elizey, Esquire, Collector of Admiralty Tenths and Mayor of Southampton.

       Edward and Joan Barlow's children were:

Henry Barlow  was born in 1597.  He had no children.

ii.

Abigail Barlow  was born in 1599 and was baptized on June 08, 1599, at St. Michael Parish, Southampton. 
She married
 George Parker   of Southampton on October 13, 1619, at St. Michael.

Their son George Parker  was the founder of the Parker family of the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Richard Barlow  was born in 1600.

Henry Barlow   was born in 1601 and was baptized on October 20, 1601, at St. Michael Parish, Southampton.

First Generation

1.  Henry Barlow  was born in 1601, was baptized on October 20, 1601, at St Michael Parish, Southampton, and was a son
     of A. Edward and Joan (Rishton) Barlow.

He was a merchant of Southampton and Lower Norfolk, Virginia.  He was probably the Henry Barlow living in 1623 "at the plantation over against James Cittie," in Virginia.

He returned to England before 1625 and served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.

He became a resident at Southampton, where he married a lady whose name is not known but who probably was a daughter of the family of Bannister of Southampton.

Henry Barlow returned to Virginia and lived at Elizabeth City in 1650.  In 1653 he lived at Lower Norfolk, Virginia, and was a beneficiary under the will of his brother Ralph.

In 1653 and in 1655 he had grants of land on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River.

His name appears in the records of lower Norfolk until 1658 and no trace of him has been found thereafter. 
Possibly he died intestate while on a return voyage to England.

       Henry Barlow's child was:

2.   Ralph Barlow   was born about 1605 and was a son of A. Edward and Joan (Rishton) Barlow.

He was a merchant and was a grantee in 1646 of land at Elizabeth City, Virginia.
He lived there with his brother Henry in 1650.

He was a patentee in 1649 of land at Northampton, Virginia, where he died four years later in 1653.

         Ralph Barlow  married  Katherine West   in 1649 in Northampton Co Virginia  [IGI].
           She was a daughter of Anthony and Ann West of Northampton, who were the immigrant ancestors of the West family of
           the Eastern Shore.   After Ralph Barlow's death she married Charles Scarburgh.

           Ralph and Katherine Barlow's only child was:

           i.   Ralph Benoni Barlow   was born in 1653 in Northampton County and died young.

Second Generation

3.   Thomas Barlow   was born around 1635, probably in England, and was a son of 1. Henry Barlow.

He was a factor for various English merchants and came to Virginia with his father about 1653.

He lived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, from 1663 and perhaps earlier.

He died on January 10, 1678, and his will was recorded on April 9, 1679.

       Thomas Barlow  married  Elizabeth ____  There is reason to believe that she was a sister, or possibly a niece,
       of GeorgeandThomas Moore,  who were sons of  John Moore, Burgess of  Isle of Wight in 1640 and  who were prominent

       citizens of Isle of Wight County in that period. 

       She survived Thomas Barlow and married second William Baldwin of Isle of Wight County on September 06, 1679.

Third Generation

4. George Barlow   was born around 1670 in Isle of Wight Co Virginia, and was a son of 3. Thomas and Elizabeth Barlow.

He lived his entire life in Isle of Wight County where he was a farmer.

His nuncupative will was recited on December 10, 1718.

      George Barlow  married  Sarah Clay.    She was born about 1674 and was a daughter of John Clay, the younger,
       of  Isle of Wight County,  and she brought to their marriage her inheritance from her father of the "Piney Point Plantation"
       on Lawnes Creek.   This property was subsequently owned by their son Thomas and his son Jesse.

       She died on March 19, 1728/9, and her will was signed and recorded in 1729.

       George and Sarah Barlow's children were born in Isle of Wight Co Virginia:

John Barlow  was born about 1720 and was a farmer in Isle of Wight County.
He married  Martha ---- and they had children.  His will was recorded and he died in 1754.

5.  John Barlow   was born about 1720 in Isle of Wight Co Virginia, and was a son of  4. George and Sarah Barlow

He was a farmer in Isle of Wight County.  He died on November 15, 1752, in Isle of Wight County.

       John Barlow  married   Martha  ----, probably about 1730.  Her will was recorded in 1760.

       Their children were:

Benjamin Barlow  of Newport Parish died on December 26, 1757.

William Barlow   was born about 1750 probably in Isle of Wight Co Virginia.
He died on August 01, 1780, in Isle of Wight County.

He married and one of his children was  Ann Barlow, who married  Matthew Webb  around 1780 and who died on June 09, 1798, in Isle of Wight County.

6.  George Barlow   was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and was a son of 4. George  and Sarah Barlow. 
      Nothing further is known about him.

7. Thomas Barlow   was born about 1702 in Isle of Wight Co Virginia, and was a son of 4. George and Sarah Barlow

He was a farmer in Isle of Wight County and his name appears frequently in the county records from 1724, when he witnessed the processioning of his widowed mother's land, until 1748, when his will was written.

He died on December 03, 1748.

      Thomas Barlow  married  Martha Carrell 
        She was born about 1720 and was a daughter of Thomas Carrell of Isle of Wight County.  She died in 1760.

Fifth Generation

Jesse Barlow   was born on September 12, 1741, at Newport Parish, Isle of Wight Co Virginia [IGI], and was a son of 7.
Thomas and Martha Barlow.

He lived at Warwick, Virginia, and in Isle of Wight County, and is believed to have been engaged in business ventures of some kind which involved him in almost constant litigation and encumbered his estate for sixteen years after his death.

As a resident at Warwick in 1770 he sold the "Piney Point Plantation" inherited from his father and in 1771 he bought land in the same locality which had formerly belonged to his father-in-law.  In 1773 he repurchased an adjoining tract bequeathed by his father to the latter's nephew William Carrell.

Thereafter Jesse Barlow lived in Isle of Wight County and in 1776 he sold all his land there to a neighbor, Richard Hardy, some three years before his death in 1779.

       Jesse Barlow  married  Lucy WillsShe was born about 1744 and was a daughter of Thomas Wills of Northampton,
        North Carolina.  She died in 1777.

Benjamin Barlow  married  Frances 'Frankey' Jones, a daughter of David Jones of Isle of Wight Co on January 21, 1792, in Isle of Wight County [IGI].

Sixth Generation

Thomas Barlow  was born around 1761, probably in Isle of Wight Co Virginia, and was a son of Jesse and Lucy Barlow.

He enlisted in the army in the Revolutionary War when he was about 16 and he served for 3 years with the 3rd Virginia (Edmond's) Artillery Regiment.  He was discharged on August 23, 1780.

Thomas Barlow was a minor and still in the army when his father died in 1779.  Consequently, the administration of the estate was granted to John Shelley.  The next year a chancery suit was brought against Thomas, as son and heir, on behalf of his younger brothers and sisters.  This action was dismissed in 1763 when it was settled out of court.

After leaving the army, Thomas Barlow lived in Brunswick County, Virginia, seemingly on the plantation of his kinsman, Willis Wills, until 1786.

He bought land in Wake County, North Carolina, in 1787, which he held until 1796.  He was recorded there in the 1790 census.

He subsequently moved to Edgefield County, South Carolina, where he acquired land in 1797, 1802 and 1807.  He was recorded there in the 1800 and 1810 censuses.

In 1810 he purchased a 200 acre tract in Laurens County, Georgia, where he died about three years later.

       According to family tradition, Thomas Barlow's first wife was  Elizabeth -- (possibly Elizabeth Roscoe), whom he
       married in Virginia about 1784.   She was born about 1766 and died in 1800.

       Thomas Barlow married second Mary ----.  She died in 1823 in Laurens County, Georgia.

Seventh Generation

Richard Barlow   was born on December 28, 1784, in Brunswick County, Virginia, and was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth
(Roscoe) Barlow
  [CDB].

He was a farmer.

He was recorded in Edgefield County, South Carolina, in the 1810 census, in Laurens County, Georgia, in the 1820 and 1830 censuses, and in Butts County, Georgia, in the 1840 and 1850 censuses.

He died on May 12, 1864, at his plantation and was buried next to his first wife Martha in the Barlow Cemetery near Indian Springs, Georgia [CDB].

     Richard Barlow  married first   Martha Hollingsworth
      She was born in 1790 in South Carolina and was a daughter of George Hollingsworth of Edgefield Co South Carolina, and
      later of Laurens Co  Georgia.  She died in 1851 and was buried in the Barlow Cemetery near
Indian Springs, Georgia [CDB].

      Their children were:

i.
James Barlow  was born in 1808 in North Carolina.  He died before 1859.
He married  Elleanor 'Nellie' Ann Jones 
ii.

Cynthia Barlow  was born in 1818.

William A. Elder  of  Butts County, Georgia [CDB]

Laura Ann Barlow  was born in 1820. 
She married  Wiley DeLansing Daughtry  of  Butts County, Georgia [CDB].
They eloped because her marriage to Wiley Daughtry was opposed by her parents because he operated a gambling casino at Indian Springs   [James E. Brown, Relatives of the Browns of Mill Springs, Kentucky]
iv.
Lucinda Barlow  was born in 1823 in Georgia [C1850]   She did not marry.
v.
Leroy H. Barlow  was born in 1826
vi.
Eldridge Barlow  was born in 1827 in Georgia [C1850]
He married first  
Amanda R. Cain  and second  Winnie Ann Williamson

Mahalia A. Barlow  was born in 1828 in Georgia [C1850]

 Samuel Morris  who died in the Civil War.   She married second  Samuel Ridgeway

He was recorded in Edgefield County, South Carolina, in the 1810 census and in Laurens County, Georgia, in the 1820 census.

He died in 1826 probably in Laurens County


      John Barlow
 married  Jane Anderson, a daughter of Henry Anderson of Laurens County, Georgia.

James Barlow  was born on February 18, 1791, probably in Wake Co NC, and was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Barlow.

He moved to South Carolina with his father and subsequently acquired land in Laurens Co Georgia, in 1812.
He was recorded in Laurens County in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses.

At the time of his death on September 19, 1855, he held about 2000 acres, with about 100  slaves, in Laurens and Sumter Counties, Georgia.

He was a prominent and respected citizen of Laurens County, a devoted and leading church member, school trustee, and justice of the county court.

     James Barlow  married  Rebecca Harvin on December 19, 1810, in Laurens County, Georgia.
      She was born in 1794 in Laurens County and was a daughter of John and Rebecca (Nowell) Harvin formerly of Edgefield Co
      South Carolina.  She died on December 19, 1830, in Laurens County.

       Their children were:

William Wills Barlow was born on September 24, 1811, in South Carolina.
He was a farmer in Sumter County, Georgia.  He died on January 07, 1877, at Americus, Sumter County, Georgia.
He married first Amanda Allen, a daughter of Eason Allen of Laurens County. 

She was born in 1823 in Georgia [C1850]
They were recorded in Sumter County in the 1850 census.
They had no children.


He married second
Elizabeth Gaither  on June 18, 1863, in Sumter County

 the Harvard family in Laurens County in the 1850 census.  He had no children.

     James Barlow married second Winnifred J. Caldwell
       She was born in 1802 in North Carolina [C1850] and was a daughter of Christopher Caldwell.

She was recorded with her parents in the 1850 census.

Thomas Barlow  was born in 1803 probably in Edgefield Co South Carolina, and was a son of Thomas and Mary Barlow.

                He was a farmer and was recorded in Lowndes County, Alabama, in the 1840 and 1850 censuses.

                He died after 1859, probably in Lowndes County.

    Thomas Barlow  married Elizabeth Caldwell,  a daughter of Samuel Caldwell of Laurens County, Georgia.

John Harvin Barlow was born on February 09, 1816, in Laurens Co Georgia, and was a son of James & Rebecca (Harvin) Barlow [JBB]

He was a farmer and he was recorded at Milton, Autauga County, Alabama, in the 1850 census.

Around 1860 he moved to Lowndes County where his plantation was called Pleasant Hill [JBB].

He died on October 9, 1871, at Americus, Sumter County, Georgia, and was buried there in the Oak Grove Cemetery [JBB]

      John Harvin Barlow married first Louisana Caroline Davis on December 23, 1841, in Autauga Co Alabama [JBB,
         IGI].
  She was born in 1824 [JBB] in Alabama [C1850] and was a daughter of Benjamin and Martha (Taylor) Davis of Autauga
       County.  She died in 1863.

       Their children were:

i.

Martha Annie Barlow was born in 1843 in Alabama [C1850]    She did not marry and she died in 1860.

ii.
Thomas Wade Barlow  was born in 1846 in Alabama [C1850]  He did not marry.

He enlisted in the Alabama Battery of the Jeff Davis Artillery in the Civil War, was captured at Spotsylvania Court House on May 01, 1864, and died in an army hospital the following year [JBB]

iii.
William Franklin Barlow  was born in 1848 in Alabama [C1850]   He did not marry and he died in 1865.
iv.

Robert Merritt Barlow  was born in 1850 probably in Autauga County, Alabama  [BBp106].  He did not marry.

v.

Mary Emma Barlow  was born in 1854.    She married Jesse Deane Boring

vi.
James Judson / Jackson Barlow was born in 1855.  He did not marry.
vii.
Ella Amelia / Aurelia Barlow  was born in 1857. 
She married first
William Buchanan and second Jesse D. Boring 
viii.
John Davis Barlow was born on November 20, 1859, probably in Autauga Co Alabama, and died on March 17, 1942, at Jacksonville, Florida.

He was a merchant at Anniston, Calhoun Co Alabama.

He married Josephine Erwin Weathers, a daughter of Allen J. and Nancy Weathers, in 1892.
She was born on May 22, 1868, and died on March 17, 1932.

Their children were Lundie Weathers Barlow, born on January 27, 1896, at Anniston, Alabama, and Robert Allen Barlow, born in 1900.

Lundie Weathers Barlow, who was a Bank Examiner and a resident at Boston, Massachusetts, later in his life, married Emaline Moore  of Green County, Georgia, in 1920 and their son was Lundie Weathers Barlow, Jr, born in 1923 at
Miami, Florida [BBp106].

Robert Allen Barlow married Padgett Hall and their daughter was Louise Barlow 

       John Harvin Barlow  married second Louisiana 'Deats' Butler   in 1864, a daughter of James Deats and the
       widow of William Archer Butler.  She was born on December 2, 1832 [JBB].

After the death of John Harvin Barlow in 1871, she, her children and several of her step-children moved to Texas.  She died on January 3, 1878, at Houston, Harris Co Texas.

Janie Lanier Barlow   was born in 1865.  She married B.C. Morrison

Laura Harvin Barlow was born on June 18, 1867, at Pleasant Hill, Lowndes County, Alabama.

She married William Jefferson Suggs on March 18, 1888, at Spring Creek, Jones County, Texas. 
He was born on August 6, 1863, at Columbus, Colorado.  He died on August 14, 1941, at
Victoria, Texas.

Joseph Foster Barlow  was born in 1869.  He married Hattie Rokar
