Issue: July 06, 1859

At the residence of her husband, near Americus, on the 17th inst., Sister Amanda Barlow, aged 37 years, 6 months, and 11 days. In 1843 she was baptized upon a profession of her faith in Christ, and united with the Baptist Church in Americus, of which she continued a devoted and consistent member until this relation was dissolved by death. During her last illness, which was of more than three months continuance, she suffered very severely, but was never heard to murmur. To the will of God she seemed entirely resigned, and often referred to her approaching end, but always spoke of it as "going home."

Her thoughts seemed to run much upon heaven, and she frequently spoke of it to her husband and others, as "the better land." She was speechless for three weeks before her death, but still gave evidence by signs, that her faith in the Redeemer was unshaken. But she is gone, and has left a heart~stricken husband, a sorrowing sister, and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her loss. But while they drop the tear of sorrow, they will ever think of her as a rejoicing spirit in the world of glory.

May God comfort the bereaved!

Died of consumption, at Indian Springs, Ga, on the 2nd July, in her 18th year, Mrs. Amanda R., wife of Mr. Eldridge Barlow, and eldest daughter of Mr. J.T. Cane, late of Alabama.

Death at all times and at any age, comes as a terrible monster, marking his course with sighs, tears and sorrows; blasting all earthly hopes, ending all earthly interests and severing the tenderest and most endearing relatives. But alas! When he selects for his object one in the bloom of youth, possessing so many lovely traits of character; tearing a young and affectionate wife from the embraces of a devoted husband ~ dragging a young and doting mother from the caresses and support of a tender and first-born infant, as he has done in the subject of this notice; he, then, comes clothed in the majesty of terrors and the triumphs of his victory.

But has not a victory been proclaimed over this dread monster? Yes, thanks be to God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Mrs. Barlow will be missed among a large circle of her young friends and youthful companions. Society generally has lost an ornament, both in her personal and moral character, that will not soon be replaced, but alas! In her __ family will be left a void, and it will sustain an irreparable loss which none but a heart~broken husband and the tender babe can realize.

But the assurances which she gave of her preparation for an abundant entrance into the kingdom of God, should dry their tears and stop their sorrows. Yes, she is missed in society and long will she be missed at home; but she has gone to swell the cloud of witnesses for Jesus in that glory world, where "Sickness and sorrow, pain and death, are felt and feared no more."

Died, in Americus, on the 19th ult., of Typhoid Fever, James Judson Barlow in the twenty fifth year of his age.

He was confined to his room five weeks but was never heard to murmur. He presented an example of the most perfect resignation to the will of God which it has ever been the privilege of the writer to witness.

The day before his death he requested an interview with his pastor, in which he stated, as well as his strength would permit, his desire for a stronger faith in the Redeemer, asking that prayer might be made to that effect.

On the day of his decease he called his brothers to his bed~side, and gave them direction concerning the settlement of his affairs. He said he wished them to convey his remains to Laurens County, and bury them beside his mother.

.....At a few minutes before 10 o’clock at night he fell asleep in Jesus, passing gently.....

He has left an aged father, several brothers and sisters.

Died, of Typhoid Fever, at his residence in Laurens County, on the 19th of September, and twentieth day of his illness. James Barlow was aged 64 years, 7 months and 1 day.

Seldom has it been the lot of any one to record a death which has been more widely felt or more deeply lamented than that of brother Barlow. He was a native of Edgefield District S.C., came to Georgia in the 21st year of his age, and settled in Laurens County on the very plantation on which he died.

In 1826 he connected himself with the Baptist church at Rocky Creek and was baptized by Reverend John Ross, in July of that year. In August he had the happiness to see his beloved wife follow his Divine Master in the ordinance of baptism, and in September he was elected Deacon; an office which he filled with honor till the day of his death.

His lot on earth, though prosperous so far as temporal things are concerned, was not without its trials and afflictions. He lived to mourn the oss of two, amiable companions (with the former of whom he lived past 20 years, and with the latter 20 years, 2 months and some days) and of seven children, three of whom had arrived at the years of maturity yet he bore his trials with …

As a father, he was singularly blessed in his family. Of nine children who reached maturity he lived to see all but one become members of the church, and all become honorable respected, and ___ members of the community.

Died, on the 29th day of June last, at the residence of her husband, near the Indian Springs Butts County ~ in the 61rst year of her age, Mrs. Martha Barlow, wife of Mr. Richard Barlow. The deceased was a native of Edgefield District, South Carolina; resided for many years after her marriage, in the County of Laurens, Ga., but for the last 12 or 14 years near the Indian Springs in Butts County.

A large circle of acquaintances and numerous relatives and friends, to whom the many virtues, kind attentions, and charitable offices of this excellent lady had endeared her sorrowfully sympathized with her bereaved husband and children, in their loss.

She died a pious, believing christian, full of hope and confidence in a bright and blissful immortality beyond the grave. As she had lived for more than 20 years, she died in full faith, a worthy esteemed and exemplary member of the Baptist Church ~ loved by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. Her death has left a void, scarcely to be filled, and a loss surely lamented by her family, friends and neighbors.

Another Father in Israel has fallen! Brother Richard Barlow is no more. He died suddenly of dropsy of the heart, at h is residence near Indian Springs, Butts County, Ga, on 12th May 1864, in his 80th year. He was born in Virginia, moved to Lawrence (sic) County, Ga., in early life, but for 24 years has lived in and near this place.

Bro. Barlow was not an ordinary man.

…But for 54 years he wore the adorning profession of Christ, …

For fifty years he filled the office of a deacon well, and was for many years a delegate to the Association. Having a liberal fortune, his house was ever open to God’s people especially his ministers. He contributed liberally to the endowment of Mercer University.
