Thomas Barlow, Elizabeth Roscoe, and Mary

Descendants in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas

The records are a compilation of the works of John R. Barlow, Virginia, Edson Barlow, Lundie W. Barlow, Clinton D. Barlow, and myself, Susan BARLOW Holmes

Update 2004:  DNA Testing has proven that the family of Alfred Hirton Barlow and of John Barlow and Martha Wadell are of this lineage.  If anyone can connect these families, we'd sure love to hear from you.  It has also proven that their is no relationship to the family of William Barlow and Edith Mathoda who lived in close proximity to this family.

Update:  November 2004, I have searched census, etc., and added families from 1870 thru 1900, as found.   Susan

Thomas Barlow1 was born c1761 Isle of Wight Co Virginia and died in 1813 in Laurens Co Georgia

(Lineage prior to Thomas is outlined in Lundie Barlow's works)

He enlisted in the Revolutionary Army when he was about sixteen. He served three years with the Third Virginia [Edmond's] Artillery Regiment and received a discharge on August 23, 1780.  He was a minor, in the army, when his father died in 1779, so that the estate administration was granted to John Shelley, probably a brother-in-law. A chancery suit was brought against Thomas dated April 06, 1780, as son and heir-at-law, on behalf of his younger siblings, and was discharged with an out-of-court settlement on May 02, 1783.

After Thomas' discharge, he married 1) Elizabeth [Roscoe?] c1784 Virginia.
Elizabeth was born c1766 in Virginia and died c1800 in Edgefield Co South Carolina. Thomas and Elizabeth lived in Brunswick Co until 1786, probably at the plantation of his kinsman, Willis Wills. In 1787, he bought and held land in Wake Co North Carolina until 1796, but removed to Edgefield Co South Carolina, where he acquired land.    --1797, 1802, 1807--

Thomas Barlow was located by the 1790 Wakefield Co North Carolina census:

1 male 16 or over - Thomas 2 males under 16 - Richard and John      2 females - Elizabeth and unknown daughter 1 slave

Thomas Barlow was located by the 1800 Edgefield Co South Carolina census; page 158

Thomas, between 26-45      2 sons under 10 2 sons 10-16     2 daughters under 10 1 daughter 10-16 wife between 26-45 2 slaves

Thomas Barlow married 2) c1801, Mary, whose surname is unknown Mary Barlow's surname is unknown because early Edgefield Co South Carolina marriage records are not existant and appropriate estate records have not been located. She was probably not a Folsom; nor a Griffin.

Thomas Barlow was located, next-door to his son Richard Barlow, by the 1810 Edgefield Co South Carolina census, page 43:    Census Image

Source: Laurens Co I & A A-38 & 39 Notes of Lundie Weathers Barlow Sr. references a manuscript record in the DAR Library, Washington, DC, concerning the division of Thomas Barlow's Laurens Co estate dated February 14, 1814: Each of the eight heirs--

Jacob Smith; James Barlow; James Youngblood; Richard Barlow; Olive Barlow; John Barlow; Mary Barlow and Thomas Barlow Jr. received a portion, worth $324.37 ½, of the total worth, $2,595.00, of slaves. These portions and names of the slaves are noted below Mary Barlow, wife of the deceased, received Jerry / Jeremiah, worth $280, and was owed $44.37 ½ by the estate. Mary Barlow's will dated August 16, 1820 proved; July 01, 1822, recorded March 10, 1823 mentioned:

....to my son Thomas Barlow, one negro Boy Jerry
....appoint my friend Archibald Griffin Executor

Proved by Eliza D. Griffin           Eliza was the daughter of Archibald Griffin and Catherine the daughter of John Barlow.

Source: Laurens Co Will Book A-60 & 61 According to Alfred J. Lester's Bible - Jerry died April 25, 1825

There is an unaccounted for Barlow marriage in Laurens Co Marriage Book C-86

Archibald Barlow married November 05, 1823 Miss Priscilla Crass. Archibald Barlow was chosen on September 18, 1835 and September 13, 1836 for Petit Jury duty in Laurens Co - no further mention, in Laurens Co records, can be found for him. Is there a connection to Archibald Griffin? Could Archibald Barlow be another son of John Barlow? Was he a child ofMary -Griffin?- Barlow by a previous marriage and adopted by Thomas Barlow? Archibald Griffin, son of Hardy and Mary Griffin of Nash Co North Carolina, may have been related to Mary Barlow.
Hardy Griffin's heirs were:

Archibald Griffin; Demsey Braswell; Francis Drake; and Benjamin Mason    ---Mary Griffin may have married either Braswell, Drake or Mason---
The estate total of 1148:0:2 came to 164 pounds for each heir, implying seven heirs

Children of Archibald Griffin and Charity Smith were: Hardy; Mary T.; Eliza Davis; Bennett S.; David J.; and Joseph J.   These six were to share equally.
