John and Elizabeth Barlow of Dallas Co Alabama

Back when I began the Barlow genealogy website, I had a query from Gil Robinson, searching for information on the family of John Barlow of Dallas Co Alabama.  I have since lost contact with Gil, but have not heard more about this family either, so thought I'd do a bit of research on them.   I feel this family is bound to be a part of the Isle of Wight Barlow's, but have not found proof of that yet. I did not do well with his ancestry, but did quite well on his descendants.

The Newbury/Newberry family information partially from Dixie.com, used by permission of webmaster,

Sorry, but a Javascript-enabled browser is required to email me.

One note, I have seen the Newberry/Newbury spelled various ways throughout the census and records I have found.  For this genealogy, all are spelled as Newbury, but doesn't mean necessarily that that particular family used that variant.

John Barlow of Dallas Co Alabama, is a source of confusion for this researcher.    He was born November 19, 1782, and died August 03, 1852 [GRobinson][Cemetery records]

He married Elizabeth, and came to Dallas Co Alabama in 1829.  [GRobison, 1850, Will]

She was born January 14, 1784 in North Carolina, and died September 18, 1857 in Dallas Co Alabama  [GRobison] [ Cemetery records]

There are three tombstones in the Barlow Family Cemetery off highway 41 in Dallas County near Centre Ridge.

These read:

'Sacred to the memory of John Barlow, born Nov.19th, 1782; died Aug. 3rd, 1852' (aged 69 years, 8 mo., 14 days) 'Dieu Vous Garde'

'Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth, wife of John Barlow,, born January 14th, 1784 and died Sept. 18th 1857' (aged 73 years, 8 mo., 4 days) 'Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord'

Mrs. Elizabeth R. Newberry, dau of John and Elizabeth Barlow, born January 28, 1824, died May 05, 1850

Apparently at one time John and Elizabeth lived in Louisiana, at least that is where his son, George W. Barlow is said to have been born, c1816. He was not, apparently there during any census takings!

The first record of John, whom I know is this one, is found in the 1830 Dallas Co Alabama census.

From this census and his will, I think he and Elizabeth had four children, George W., Elizabeth, Sarah and Frances, not necessarily in order of birth.

He is living next door to Lucy Crocker, originally Lucy Barlow who married Drury Crocker.  Lucy is the daughter of  Jesse Barlow and Lucy Wills.  I have not found a relationship between John, Lucy and Jesse as yet, but feel there must be one.

I didn't locate him in 1840, but again, in 1850, he is in Dallas Co Alabama.

A Wilcox Co Alabama guardianship application dated 18 October 1852 and approved December 1852 transferred guardianship to Henry Newbury for all six children. This sounds ike Henry must have transferred guardianship of all his children sometime after the 1850 census and Elizabeth's death to Elizabeth's parents. Thus, once he had some help (probably Wincy Hart) even before they married and /or the older children became old enough to help with the younger ones, he then had to transfer their guardianship back to himself.   (If there was a guardianship document filed in the assumed transfer from Henry to Elizabeth's parents, it may have been filed in Dallas Co Alabama)

After Elizabeth death, Henry married Wincy Armstrong on 18 August 1853, and moved to Lee / Itawamba Co Saltillo, Mississippi in 1853.

In 1860, Henry, age 37 (he has apparently lied about his age), Wincy is 36, John B. is 19, George W. is 12, and Amanda is 10.  Also included are 2 children from Wincy's previous marriage, and a child between the two of them.    Census Image

Children of Elizabeth and Henry are:

i.

Ann2 / Anne / Annie S. Newbury was born c 1837/8 Wilcox Co Alabama

In an article on the life of John Barlow Newbury in the "Courtland Arizonan" it mentions that after John Barlow Newbury was wounded 05 May 1864 in the Battle of the Wilderness, he went home on furlough and stayed with his sister Anne Price and did not return to active service.

She may have married John B. Price, as shown in this Ittawamba Co Mississippi record:   Ann L.B.  Newbury and John B. Price, December 23, 1854

George W. Barlow, son of John Barlow and Elizabeth, was born c1816 in Louisiana, and died before the 1880 census, probably in Dallas Co Alabama.

He married Mary A. Holloway 03 January 1850 by M.G. Meredith in Dallas Co Alabama.  She may have removed to Texas with the rest of the family......and may be the Mattie A. shown to have died in 1910.

According to Furn Smith, whose gr grandparent is Benjamin Barlow, son of George and Mary, G.W. and Mary are buried in the Barlow Cemetery, Center Ridge, Dallas Co Alabama in unmarked graves. [Al Genealogy Society]

The M.A. listed in the 1850 census as daughter of John and Elizabeth Barlow is surely the same as this one, she must have been George' wife at that time.

After an illness extending over a period of more than a year, J.T. Barlow, who has been making his home in Alice for the past eight years, died at this home in this city, Monday afternoon. (14th July) He came to Alice from central Texas, where during his earlier years he had been active in politics and business. For two or three years after arriving in this county, he was a contractor and helped to build the first highways through here, and continued his connection with the highway department until failing health demanded his retirement from active duty.

He was born in Richmond, Alabama on April 01, 1855 and married in 1887 at Bartlett, Texas to Miss Mollie Watkins. Three children were born to this union: Freddie, George M., and Grace. He is survived by two sisters, and one brother, (Benjamin) and his brother-in-law.

M.S. Stanford of Dorena was here the make the arrangements pertaining to the funeral, which was held this morning at 10 o'clock under the direction of Moyer's Mortuary, with Reverend Holder, pastor of the Espiscopal Church, conducting the services. The Echo joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

Newbury, Sept 2, 1840 -- Dec 29, 1912  Co. E, 2nd Miss. Inf., Confederate Army

He married Martha E. Reaves/Reeves on 12 January 1865 in Ittawamba Co Mississippi [Ittwwamba Marriage Records] or 05 January 1865 in Tishomingo Co Mississippi.  [Martha's widow's pension application]  It may be that they married in Tishomingo Co, and filed the marriage in Ittawamba Co.  She was born 1848 and died 1919, she shares a tombstone with her son, John E. Barlow in Calvary Cemetery, Douglass, Cochise Co Arizona.

Military: CSA: Private, 2nd Mississippi Infantry Company "E", "Calhoun Rifles", Itawamba Co Mississippi. enlisted 10 May 1861. There are Texas Confederate Pension applications filed in Texas for a "John Barlow Newbury" and later by his wife "Martha E. Newbury"; application #'s 01320 and 25026 respectively. This is a rough transcription of the applications. I included only what I considered to be pertinent and my transcription is abbreviated and paraphrased in many cases. Information within quotes, should be exact, or as close to exact, as I could decipher their statements. According to military records he was present at the following: Seige of Suffolk (May 1863), Gettysburg (July 1 and July 3, 1863), Falling Water (July 14, 1863), Mile Run (Dec 1, 1863), and the battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864 where he was wounded and later furloughed, and afterwards he did not return to active service.

Martha Elizabeth Reeves stated in her Texas Widow's Application filed on 28 November 1913, "I am 65 years of age". This would make her born about 1847/8 and married at about age 18. In Martha's Texas Confederate Widow's Pension Application, she stated that she married on 05 Jan 1865 in Tishomingo Co Mississippi, which appears to be in discrepancy with Itawamba Co marriage records and the 1913 biographical article on John Barlow Newbury and both are in discrepancy with the following LDS Family Group Record: [ FamilySearch™ International Genealogical Index v5.0 North America - Family Group Record - Husband: John Newbury; Marriage: 1868 Marietta, Prentiss, Mississippi / Wife : Martha E. Reeves; Birth: 20 June 1848; Father: Simeon W. Reeves; Mother: Mary Ann Orr ]

LIFE SKETCH OF J. B. NEWBURY

John Barlow Newbury was born in Wilcox County, Alabama, September 2, 1840. He was Welch descent. His grandfather Johnathan Newbury emigrated to the United States late in the eighteenth century and settled in North Carolina, where he engaged in tilling soil. Here by thrift and industry he supported a large family. [Welsh descent and grandfather Johnathan emigrated in the late 18th century; appear to this author to be in error and probably based on the fact that his grandfather Jonathan's family lived in the Welsh Tract of Richmond/Anson Counties, North Carolina from about 1750-1817].  About the year 1806 [1818 according to hand writted note written by Mary Julia Bonner Newbury (1840-1920) of Wilcox Co Alabama; "Grandfather Jonathan Newbury came from Richmond Co North Carolina in 1818... and settled on the land we now own." 1818 fits all other data that this author has seen.] Johnathan Newbury moved with his family into Alabama.

Henry Newbury the father of the subject of this sketch was at this time only about six years of age.   Here Henry grew to manhood on the farm, and what little schooling he had was at the hands of a governess. Yet southern sunshine and southern love of liberty as well as love of country made even the boy a democrat of the true stripe -- a characteristic that has never been lacking in the Newbury family.

Henry Newbury chose for his life companion Miss Elizabeth Barlow of Dallas County, and then settled on a part of the old Newbury homestead in Wilcox Co where they resided until they moved to Saltillo Mississippi, in 1853. Henry, being an owner of slaves had extensive farming interest, and at the breaking out of the civil war was a well-to-do citizen of his adopted state.

Here were born to Henry and Elizabeth Newbury six children. The names of the children in order of birth were Annie, John Barlow, Louisa, Elizabeth, George, and Amanda, all of whom lived to be grown. [The preceding also has some errors; Henry's wife Elizabeth Barlow Newbury died in 1850 in Wilcox Co Alabama and Henry later married Wincy Armstrong Hart, then Henry and Wincy moved to Saltillo Mississippi and had another child not mentioned above, Charles Newbury, born 1853/54.]  There being no public school system the children were all educated in private school. John had the advantage of about sixteen years of this kind of schooling and the time not spent in the school room was put in on the farm. Henry Newbury was a man who believed in work and practiced it, nor did he leave his children out of the program. With the time thus occupied, and with strict discipline maintained according to good old Presbyterian standard. The children formed regular habits and maintained uniformly moral characters. Henry and Elizabeth Newbury being members of the Presbyterian Church trained their children to respect things sacred.

At the breaking out of the civil war three sisters of the family had married, but the rest of the family lived at the old home. John was now 20 years old. The noise of guns at Fort Sumpter [sic] stirred southern blood and John Newbury was among the first to hear his country's call to defend southern rights as Southerners saw them. He enlisted Sunday May 10, 1861, 9 A.M. at Lynchbury, Va. in the Second Mississippi Infantry, Company E. During the first year the regiment was under Colonel W.C. Faulkner in Lee's army. The Second Mississippi first saw service at the first battle of Manassas, the army being then commanded by Gen. Jos. E. Johnston. Even in this first conflict many comrades fell, and Newbury was of the number detailed to bury the dead, in fact it nearly always fell to his lot to perform this duty, and as the South was left in possession of the battlefield about three times to the North one, the burying was no little part of his work.

History tells much of these strenuous campaigns, but only the men who fought in the army of Northern Virginia know the whole story. John Newbury followed Lee in every conflict to the battle of the Wilderness, where he was wounded, and went home on furlough. He then saw some of the hardest battles of the war: being with Lee at Gettysburg as well as in his first invasion of the North. At the time Newbury was sent home only about half of the original Second Mississippi was left to tell the story. He went to the home of his sister; Mrs. Anne Price, and did not return to active service.

Like most southern boys of this period Newbury spent the years in the army that by rights should have been spent in college, an the close of the war found the Old South to much impovished [sic] to educate her sons save at the plow and Newbury went at once to work.

On January 12, 1865 John B. Newbury married Miss Martha Elizabeth Reeves of Itawamba Co Mississippi, a beautiful and noble hearted girl who proved to be the best wife and mother. So, even before Lee surrendered this born young couple with little but honest purpose and a will to work, started out to aid in the building of the New South. How nobly these Confederate Veterans have builded [sic], history must tell -- and is telling.

From this marriage were born nine children as follows; William H., Robert E., Stella, Mollie, John E., Edgar, Maude, James, Walter.

The first three years of married life were spent in the old home in Mississippi.  But the war so changed the condition of things that at the first opportunity the family sought a newer country and settled in Kaufman Co Texas in the fall of 1869.

Mr Newbury fell to sleep at Courtland December 26, 1911 [according to tombstone this should be Dec 29, 1912, also this article is dated as January 04, 1913] at 7:45 A.M. Age 72 years 3 mo 27 days. He leaves Mrs. Newbury, William, John, Stella and Walter to mourn this loss.

"PIONEER DIES"

Sunday morning, at 7:45, there passed from earthly life, J. B. Newbury, pioneer of Courtland and father of our well known townsmen John and Walter Newbury.

Mr. Newbury had been in very poor health during the last three years of his life, rarely leaving the house, and was confined to his bed for several months prior to his death.

The funeral was held at the home of the family, at 1 o'clock, Rev S. M. Cheek delivering a very touching tribute to the good man that had gone beyond the reach of human endeavors. The interment was at the Pearce cemetery and under the direction of the Palace Undertaking Parlors.

"God hath not promised
Skies always blue,
Flower-strewn pathways
All our lives through;
God hath not promised
sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow,
Peace without pain.
But God hath promised
Strength for the day,
Rest for the labor,
Light along the way,
Grace for the trials,
Help from above,
Unfailing sympathy,
Undying love."

James F. Newberry, b November 1,1838 in North Carolina, d November 19, 1912 at Reagan, Falls County, Texas and buried in Johnson Cemetery there -was a son of Peter Newberry, b 1807 in North Carolina, d 1854 in Alabama, and his wife, Sarah (Barlow) Newberry, b 1809 in Alabama, d 1882 in Alabama - a daughter of John and Rebecca Barlow of Virginia. James' paternal grandparents were Jonathan and Mary (Williams) Newberry - natives of North Carolina. After James' father died, his mother, Sarah (Bar- low) Newberry, married second in Alabama. In 1862, James F. Newberry enlisted in the Confederate States Army in Company F, 53rd Alabama Cavalry - serving until the end of the war. He returned to the home place in Alabama, but found little except the 300 acres of land he had inherited from his father. James worked hard to make a living for his family, but was unable to do so; and in 1876, he brought his family to Falls County, Texas. In 1858, before the Civil War, James had married Margaret E. Vaughn (called "Maggie"), b March 30, 1839 in Alabama, d January 28,1908 in Reagan, Falls County, Texas and buried in Johnson Cemetery - a daughter of Beckham and Ann (Ward) Vaughn - natives of South Carolina.
