Marvin Frazier is about the last of the
family left living down there. He is triple-related to us
as the Barlow's and Fraziers intermarried many times (I think
his ggm was Mary Barlow, sister of Elizabeth, John, etal
and his great aunt, Sarah
Frazier is my ggm, there are more relations
- but you get the picture here). He indicated the other
Barlow Cemetary is in the middle of nowhere and there aren't
any headstones, only rocks to mark the graves. He is trying
to find the last caretakers records for me before Saturday
when we meet and exchange information. He thinks William
Barlow (son of Henry) is buried there along with his children.
Phylis sent me some information she found that indicated
William's children had lived with John Barlow (my ggf)
after William's death. Since my mother is named Gussie
Lee as was one of William's children, we felt there had
to be a closeness there somewhere. Until I started tracing
their genealogy she had no idea she was named after anyone.
It doesn't surprise me that she was never told this since
I have 100's of pictures we found in their attic and still
don't have a clue whom these people could be. Since my
mother remembers visting your family quite a bit, I'll
bet some of the pictures are of your family. Marvin will
have his family photo's with him (his all have the names
on them) to try and help me identify some of mine.
BARLOW - MAYS CEMETERY
Directions ....Turn left
onto Hwy 9 off of Hwy 8 as you are heading towards
Princeton. You pull off of the road at the 1st set
of active 4-wheeler tracks to the left. ou can drive
about 1/2 of a mile on this trail, then it gets too
narrow. At the first fork in the trail stay to the
right. About 1/2 -1 mile farther is an old outhouse
looking shack on the right of the path. You will pass
it with the shack on your right, stay on this main
portion of the trail for quite a while. It narrows
even more and sort of washes out. There is a slight
dip then you come to a slight high spot. If you look
to the left you can see one headstone, but you have
to really be looking. Your ggm's headstone is broken,
as you can see. At the foot of her grave leaning against
a sapling is a white marble slab about 14" high
by 6" wide.
It was upside down when we found it and took us a while
to figure it out. Anyway, it appears to have a cursive
M. on the left side and a cursive F. on the other edge.
We assumed this indicated Mother and Father buried
together. If this does belong at the foot of her grave
it would indicate her husband is buried next to her
without a headstone.

It is my understanding International Paper
now owns this land. As I mentioned earlier the trails aren't
kept up. There were 2 trees down in the area of the graves.
There were also 9 - unmarked by headstone - graves that we
found. We don't have a clue who they were. There are some newer
headstones for a family of Dedman's.
There is a May's home still on Hwy 8, owned by Red Mays. The
gentleman indicated this was the old May's place. It appears
he is operating a deer huntng club out of the house. It was
kept up and looked nice, had a new metal roof. |
