Thomas Barlow of Tennessee & Illinois
1.

Thomas Barlow was born about 1760 and came to America from Scotland before the Revolutionary War.  He died between 1820 and 1825 at Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, and was buried there.

Thomas Barlow and his family came to White County, Illinois, in 1818 and were recorded in the 1818 census there.  They returned to Shelby County, Tennessee, before 1820 and were recorded there in the 1820 census. His widow, Elizabeth Barlow, returned to Illinois with her four sons in 1825 and was recorded in Montgomery County, Illinois, in the 1830 census.

Thomas Barlow married Elizabeth Nicholas.  She was born in 1787.  She died on January 18, 1841, at Grisham Township, Montgomery County, Illinois, and was buried there in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Their children were:

i. Catherine Barlow was born around 1780-90 in Virginia [Mathis]
She died in 1836 in

Condon / Cowden / Couden on July 21, 1831, in Montgomery Co Illinois [IGI, VR]

She married James C.
(or J.) Cameron on July 15, 1833, in Montgomery County, Illinois [Mathis, IGI, IL VR]

Mary Barlow was born in 1807 in Tennessee [Mathis]
She married James Bostick on
February 24, 1829, in Montgomery County, Illinois [IGI, VR]
She died on August 26,
1843, in Montgomery County, Illinois, and was buried there in the McCord Cemetery.

Second Generation

2.

James Barlow was born around 1790-1800 in Tennessee [Mathis, C1830, C1840], and was a son of 1. Thomas and Elizabeth (Nicholas) Barlow.  He came to Montgomery County, Illinois, from Tennessee in 1825 with his mother and three brothers, and was recorded there in the 1830 census.  He moved to Jefferson County, Illinois, where he was recorded in the 1840 census.  He died on January 4, 1848, in Jefferson County [Mathis]

On January 8, 1845, James Barlow purchased 80 acres of public land, consisting of the eastern half of the northeast quarter of section 21 of T04S R03E, Spring Garden township, in Jefferson County.

James Barlow married Amanda J. ---- [Mathis]  She apparently died before 1850 because she has not been found in that census.

Their children probably included:

i. Lucinda Barlow.  She married Volney Lucas on May 8, 1845, in Jefferson County [IL VR]
ii. Melinda Barlow.
She married Edward P. Bevis on November 4, 1849, in Jefferson
County [IL VR]
iii. Ann Eliza Barlow was born in 1823 in Tennessee [C1850]
She married Abraham Adams
on December 20, 1855, in Jefferson County, Illinois [IL VR]
6. iv. John R. (or H.) Barlow was born in 1823-24 in Tennessee [C1850,60]
7. v. James C. Barlow was born in 1827-28 in Tennessee [C1850,60]
vi.
Nancy E. Barlow was born in 1833-4 in Tennessee [C1850-60]
She was recorded with
the Abraham Adams family at Spring Garden, Jefferson County, Illinois, in the 1860 census.
vii.
Amanda Jane Barlow was born in 1835-6 in Kentucky [C1850]
On April 26, 1853,
Amanda J. Barlow purchased 40 acres of public land, consisting of the southwest quarter of the northeast quarter of section 29 of T04S R03E, Spring Garden township, in Jefferson County.
On August 8, 1853, Amanda Jane Barlow married George McAdoo
in Jefferson County [IL VR]
viii. Cynthia E. Barlow was born in 1837 in Illinois [C1850]

John Nicholas Barlow was born in 1797 in North Carolina [Mathis], or in 1797-8 in Virginia [C1850-60], and was a son of 1. Thomas and Elizabeth (Nicholas) Barlow.

He came to Montgomery County, Illinois, from Tennessee in 1825 with his mother and three brothers, and was recorded there in the 1830 and 1840 censuses.  On July 26, 1839, he bought 40 acres of public land, consisting of the northwest quarter of the northeast quarter of section 12 of T07N R05W, Grisham Township, in Montgomery County.  He apparently moved to Bond County, Illinois, where a John N. Barlow, born in 1797-8 in Virginia, was recorded in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.  He died on February 8, 1870, in Montgomery County [Mathis].

John Nicholas Barlow married Anna E. Burk on April 13, 1828 [Mathis]
She was born in 1803-4 in Virginia [C1850-60].  She died on January 9, 1871.

Their children were:

She married Caleb Callison
on September 18, 1873, in Montgomery County, Illinois [IGI]

William Barlow was born around 1800-10 in Tennessee [Mathis], and was a son of 1. Thomas and Elizabeth (Nicholas) Barlow.  He came to Montgomery County, Illinois, from Tennessee in 1825 with his mother and three brothers, and was recorded there in the 1830 census.

On March 19, 1834, he purchased 40 acres of public land, consisting of the southwest quarter of the northwest quarter of section 17 of T07N R04W, Grisham Township, in Montgomery County. 

He married Mahala ---- and he died in 1846 [Mathis]

Joseph Mackie Barlow was born on December 11, 1801, at Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee [Mathis], and was a son of 1.  Thomas and Elizabeth (Nicholas) Barlow.  He came to Montgomery County, Illinois, from Tennessee in 1825 with his mother and three brothers, and was recorded there in the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 censuses.  He was a farmer and a licensed pioneer Cumberland Presbyterian minister in the Vandalia Presbytery.  He died on January 17, 1871, at Walshville, Montgomery County, Illinois, and was buried there in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Joseph Barlow served as a private in Captain Thomas Stout's Company, 2nd Regiment, 3rd Brigade, Illinois Mounted Volunteers, in the Black Hawk War.  He was enrolled on May 5, 1832, marched to Fort Wilburn on June 8- 18, and was mustered in on June 19, 1832.

On August 18, 1836, Joseph Barlow purchased 42 acres of public land, consisting of the southeast quarter of the southwest quarter of section 6 of T07N R04W, Grisham Township, in Montgomery County.  He purchased an additional 40 acres on November 22, 1849, and another 40 acres on December 20, 1850.

Joseph Barlow married first Harriet Smith on March 13, 1821, at Memphis, Shelby Co Tennessee.
She was born on February 2 or 15, 1802, in Pennsylvania.  She died on July 2,
1838, at age 36 at Walshville and was buried there in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Their children were:

Cynthia E. Barlow was born on February 2, 1821, in Tennessee, probably at Memphis.
She married Matthew Finley on August 23, 1849, in Montgomery County, Illinois [IGI,
VR]
She died on April 11, 1885, at Grisham Township, Montgomery County, and
was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
11. ii. John S. Barlow was born on December 18, 1821, in Tennessee [C1850], probably at Memphis.
12. iii. William J. Barlow was born on August 22, 1823, in Tennessee, probably at Memphis.
iv.

Elizabeth Ruth Barlow was born on June 23, 1825, in Illinois.
She married Philip
Corlew Jr. on December 14, 1843, in Montgomery County [IGI, VR]
He was born on
March 3, 1822, and was a son of Philip (1777-1856) and Anna (Kincaid) (1789-1856) Corlew, who settled in Madison County, Illinois, in 1819.  He died in 1855.
She died on
March 22, 1859, and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Emily Caroline Barlow was born on May 4, 1828, probably in Montgomery County, Illinois.
She married first William C. Cameron on October 26, 1848, in Montgomery
County, Illinois [VR, IGI]
He died on July 25, 1849.
She married second Moses
Beck on November 3, 1851 (or March 11, 1851).  He was born on February 10, 1819, in Montgomery County and was a son of Paul and Dolly (Blair) Beck.  He died on March 6, 1903, at Nokomis, Montgomery County, Illinois, and was buried in the Rankin Cemetery, Fillmore Township, Montgomery County. (Moses was the father of Nancy's husband, Lewis!)
After her husband's death, Emily
went to live with her daughter Martha Hunter at Broken Bow, Custer County, Nebraska, where she died on June 25, 1917, at age 91.
vi.

Sarah Ann Barlow was born on August 7, 1830, in Montgomery County, Illinois.
She
died there on March 9, 1839, and was buried there in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

vii. Ceburn Barlow was born in 1831 in Montgomery County, Illinois.
He died on March 9,
1839, and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
viii.
Mary Jane Barlow was born on February 6, 1833, in Montgomery County, Illinois.
She
married Joseph S. Whiteside on December 22, 1859, in Montgomery County [IGI, IL VR]
He died on November 1, 1915.
She died on May 13, 1883, and was buried in the
Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
ix. Nancy Maria Barlow was born on March 6, 1835, in Montgomery County, Illinois.
She
died on September 17, 1839, and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
x. Harriet E. Barlow was born on July 29, 1837.
She died on April 13, 1839, and was buried
in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
xi. W.B. Barlow died on May 27, 1856, and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Joseph Barlow married second Nancy Jane Blair on October 15, 1838, in Montgomery County, Illinois [VR, IGI].  She was born on February 19, 1821, in Montgomery County [C1850] and was a daughter of John and Eliza Jane (Isaacs) Blair.  She died on December 16, 1857, and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Their children were:

Eliza Ann Barlow was born on July 24, 1839 [C1850], in Illinois, probably at Walshville, Montgomery County.
She married
Murrey Easley on February 18, 1857 (or February 17, 1858 [VR] in Montgomery County [IGI]  He was born in 1833 and was a son of Thomas (1792-1877) and Rachel (Murrah) (1799- ) Easley, who settled in Montgomery County in 1829.  He died in 1913.
She died on
July 7, 1921, at Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois, and was buried there in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

xiii.
Joseph B. Barlow was born on December 27, 1840, and died on February 11, 1841, probably at Walshville, Montgomery County, Illinois.
xiv. Mary Barlow was born in 1842 in Illinois [C1850], probably at Walshville, Montgomery County.
xv.
Phebe Ellen Barlow was born on July 7, 1842, in Illinois [C1850,60], probably at Walshville, Montgomery County.
She married James T. Ferguson on April 18, 1861,
in Montgomery County [VR, IGI]
She died on March 12, 1918, at Hillsboro and was
buried there in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Martha Knight Barlow was born on August 2, 1844, in Illinois [C1850,60], probably at Walshville, Montgomery County.
She married first George W. Davenport on February
21, 1861, in Montgomery County [VR, IGI]
She married second Michael Judge on
August 7, 1883.

Sinah Jane Barlow was born on November 15, 1846, in Illinois [C1850-60], probably at Walshville, Montgomery County.
She married first Thomas B. Root on June 9,
1864, in Montgomery County [VR, IGI], and second John Preston Moss on September 26, 1867.
She died on March 1, 1909, and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery at
Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois.
xviii.
Frances Ewing Barlow was born on January 21, 1847, at Walshville, Montgomery Co Illinois [C1860]
She married Erastus M. Root on December 14, 1865 [VR],
or on December 17, 1865 [IGI], in Montgomery County.  He was born on April 26, 1844, at Vernon, Indiana, and was a son of Commodore C. and Cynthia (Prather) Root.  He died on October 3, 1892, in Montgomery County and was buried there in the Elmwood Cemetery.
She died on July 22, 1933, at Indianapolis, Indiana, and was
buried at Washington Park, Indiana.

Thomas Morgan Barlow was born on May 25, 1851, in Illinois [C1860], probably at Walshville, Montgomery County.

Alcinda H. Barlow was born on August 23, 1853, in Illinois [C1860], probably at Walshville, Montgomery County.
xxi. Alice H. Barlow was born in 1854 in Montgomery County, Illinois.
She married William
Towell on August 2, 1870, in Montgomery County [IGI, IL VR]

Euphrates Lee Barlow was born on February 21, 1856, in Illinois [C1860], probably at Walshville, Montgomery County.

Joseph Barlow married third Mrs. Sarah Davis on December 18, 1858, in Montgomery Co [IGI, IL VR]
He married fourth Mrs. Sarah Ann Lemon on April 28, 1864, in Montgomery County [IGI]
There were no children of these two marriages.

Third Generation

6.

John R. (or H.) Barlow was born in 1823-24 in Tennessee [C1850,60] and was a son of 2. James and Amanda J. Barlow.  He was recorded as a farmer at Walshville, Montgomery County, Illinois, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

John R. (or A.) Barlow married first Mary M. McRight / McCreight) on August 15, 1844, in Jefferson County [IGI, IL VR]

Their child was:

i. Mary Barlow was born in 1843-44 in Illinois [C1850,60]

John R. Barlow married second Susan Lincoln on May 24 1849 in Montgomery County [IGI, VR].  She was born in 1822-24 in Kentucky [C1850,60] and had been previously married to a Mr. Lincoln.  She brought two children from her previous marriage and they were recorded with her in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, Charles H. Lincoln (called Charles Barlow in the 1850 census), born in 1845-6 in Illinois and George Lincoln (called George Barlow in the 1850 census), born in 1847 in Illinois.


John and Susan Barlow's children were:

James C. Barlow was born in 1827-28 in Tennessee [C1850,60] and was a son of 2. James and Amanda J. Barlow.

On August 14, 1852, James C. Barlow purchased 40 acres of public land, consisting of the northwest quarter of the northeast quarter of section 27 of T04S R03E, Spring Garden township, In Jefferson County.  He was recorded as a farmer in Jefferson County in the 1850 census and at Spring Garden, Jefferson County, in the 1860 census.

James C. Barlow married first Rebecca ---- probably around 1849-50 and probably in Jefferson County because they were recorded there in the 1850 census.  She was born in 1827 in Tennessee [C1860]

Their children were:

i. Mary E. Barlow was born in 1852 in Illinois [C1860]
ii. George W. Barlow was born in 1854 in Illinois [C1860]
iii. Miage J. Barlow, a son, was born in 1857 in Illinois [C1860]

James C. Barlow married second Sarah Isabele Adams on May 26, 1875, in Jefferson County [IL VR]

William C. Barlow was born in 1827 in Illinois [C1850- 60] and was a son of 3. John Nicholas and Anna E. (Burk) Barlow.

He married Emily B. Godown / Godwon on October 30, 1856, in Montgomery County, Illinois [IL VR, IGI], and they were recorded living next door to his parents at Greenville, Bond County, Illinois, in the 1860 census. She was born in 1840 in Illinois [C1860]

Their child was:

i. B.M. Barlow, a son, was born around February 1860 at Greenville, Bond County [C1860]

Joseph B. Barlow was born in 1833 in Illinois [C1850] and was a son of 3. John Nicholas and Anna E. (Burk) Barlow.

James C. Barlow was born in 1838-9 in Illinois [C1850-60] and was a son of 3. John Nicholas and Anna E. (Burk) Barlow.  He died in 1918 at age 80 and was buried in the Mt. Pulaski Cemetery at Grisham Township, Montgomery County.

He was probably the James C. Barlow who married Sarah Compton on November 7, 1867, in Montgomery County, Illinois [VR, IGI]

John S. Barlow was born on December 18, 1821, in Tennessee [C1850], probably at Memphis, and was a son of 5. Joseph and Harriet (Smith) Barlow.  He was recorded as a farmer in Montgomery County in the 1850 census.  He died on February 1, 1854, at Walshville and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

John S. Barlow married Sinah Finley on September 15, 1840.  She was born in 1821-22 in Tennessee [C1850,60].  Sinah (Finley) Barlow married second David R. (or K.) Holliday (born 1822 in Illinois) on January 22, 1857, in Montgomery County [IGI, IL VR], and they were recorded at Walshville in the 1860 census.  She died on February 3, 1880.

John and Sinah Barlow's children were:

Joseph M. Barlow was born in 1841 in Illinois [C1850,60]
He married Catharine
Chapman (born 1840 in Tennessee) on November 17, 1859, in Montgomery County [IGI, IL VR]
ii. William F. Barlow was born in 1843-4 in Illinois [C1850,60]

Ferguson on September 21, 1865, in Montgomery County [IGI, IL VR]
iii. Nancy Barlow was born in 1847 in Illinois [C1850,60]
iv. Emily Barlow was born in 1852 in Illinois [C1860]

William J. Barlow was born on August 22, 1823, in Tennessee, probably at Memphis, and was a son of 5. Joseph and Harriet (Smith) Barlow.  He died on August 22, 1829, at Grisham Township, Montgomery County, and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

13.

Thomas Morgan Barlow was born on May 25, 1851, in Illinois [C1860], probably at Walshville, Montgomery County, and was a son of 5. Joseph and Nancy Jane (Blair) Barlow.  He was a merchant dealing in coal and grain under the name T.M. and C.C. Barlow, and he was mayor of Walshville.   He died on April 30, 1926, and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Thomas Barlow married Nancy Elizabeth McPhail on February 27, 1868, at Hillsboro in Montgomery County [VR, IGI].  She was born on January 11, 1849, at Walshville and was a daughter of James and Martha A. (Kirkland) McPhail.  She died on July 17, 1934, at Litchfield and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Their children were born at Walshville:

i. Charles Clinton Barlow was born on December 29, 1868.
He married Anna Haley in
October 1890.  He died on December 4, 1932.
ii. James Ellis Barlow was born on March 13, 1872.
He married Ada Mae Bridgewater on
March 26, 1894.  He died on December 26, 1946.
iii.
Thomas Morgan Barlow, Jr., was born in 1880 and died in 1919 at age 39.
He married
but her name is not known.
Two of their children died in infancy:  Shirley Barlow, born
1891, died 1892, and Charles G. Barlow, born 1901, died 1902.
iv. Lillie Barlow died in 1884.

14.

Euphrates Lee Barlow was born on February 21, 1856, in Illinois [C1860], probably at Walshville, Montgomery County, and was a son of 5. Joseph and Nancy Jane (Blair) Barlow.

He married Mary E. Hudspeth on February 18, 1874, in Montgomery County [IGI].  He died on June 25, 1938, at Hillsboro, Illinois, and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
