Chronology of the Life of Wilson Hues Barlow
Barbour Co Alabama, Sumter Co Georgia, and Orange Co Florida

From the research of Susan BARLOW Holmes and Judy McCartney

Wilson Hues Barlow was born March 15, 1835 in Barbour Co Alabama
The family removed to Sumter Co Georgia when Wilson was young

It is not known who the father of Wilson is, his mother is Elizabeth, shown as the head of family in the 1850 census of Sumter Co Georgia. It appears that Wilson may be a twin to Edyann Barlow.

This census record was almost illegible...at first I thought the surname was Barton.
The 1860 census of Sumter Co finds Mrs. Barlow living with her daughter, Mrs. Eda Phillips.

I findno record of Henryor Wilson livingin Georgia, the daughters have apparently married, thus changing their names, and making it impossible to find where they might be living.

Is this the same Wilson H., son of Elizabeth Barlow?

A Wilson Hues Barlow married to Mary A. Brown on January 02, 1862 in Sumter Co Georgia

On March 05, 1863, Wilson Hues Barlow enlisted in the Confederate Army, GA51rstInfantry, Co G,at Newton, Baker Co Georgia. Discharged at the end of the war while in a hospital in Macon Georgia.

The 1870 census finds him living in Sumter Co Georgia, with a 7 year old son, John W. Barlow. The family removed to Orange Co Florida about 1873,his pension application of 1907, tells that he had been a resident if that county for 34 years.

If the W.H.inthis census is Wilson, then he has aged 13 years in 6, andMary has aged only 1 year. The children's ages are correct to be thesame family.I assume that J.C. and Loure are thesame person, can anyone give a correct name for her? Also need a name for the son, M.M. Barlow. Can anyone identify the Massiner family?
AWilson H. Barlow of Maitland, married Mrs. Mary A. Alexander of Orlando on05September 1894, Orange Co Marriage records, Volume I, Book 4, page 395, that may or may not be the same.
Wilsonstates in hispensionapplicationof1907thathe is the father of one son and three daughters, all of whom werelivingat that time. It appears that Wilson is alone, no property, helives "amongst" his children and has no means of support. ApparentlyeitherJohn or M.M. Barlow is deceased at the time of the filing.
Checking Orange Co Marriage Records for Barlow married in that county, I find a John W. Barlow of Sanford, Orange Co Florida marrying, Mrs. Maggie White of Oviedo, Orange Co Florida on 03 Sept 1899, Volume 1, Book 4, page 585.

Another note, the marriage record of Wilson Hues Barlow and Mary A. Brown, tells that they married in 1862. However, if we accept the date of birth forJohnW.Barlow in the 1900 census, transcribed myself from the original census record, andiscorrect ... then his birth would have 2 years prior to the marriage of the parents; if indeed Mary Brown is his mother. However, if you go back and look at the 1870, and the 1880 census' as well asthe 1886 state census, you will find that he was actually born in 1863 -1864, probably December of 1863. I do think it is the correct John to be the son of Wilson & Mary, because the sister Maude, is living with him, and her age is correct.
Having searched all of the 1900 census for Orange Co, I have not found Wilson orMaryBarlow, nor the rest of the children. Eldora had married prior to 1900andmayhave moved out of the state, as I have not located Alfred GriffininOrange Co. Wilson has either temporarily left the county, or is between homes, as he is not listed anywhere in Orange Co.

John W. Barlow is the only Barlow in Orange Co Florida in 1900

No female Barlows are listed as having married in Orange Co thru 1909 in the records that I have.

Wilson filed for a military pension in 1907 from Orange Co Florida and was approved

Wilson filed for a military pension in 1909 from Orange Co Florida and was denied

No further records have been found.

Judy McCartney December 2000

Eldora Barlow was born 11 February 1876 in Maitland Orange Co Florida and passed away 11 February 1959. Her mothers maiden name was Allen according to information from Eldora's death certificate, informant shown to be Eldora, apparently given prior to her death.

Eldora married 06 May 1896 to Alfred Griffin in Hillsborough Co Florida. He was born 28 September 1871 in Huntington, Hereford, England and passed away 09 January 1929 in San Francisco, California.

Eldora lived in Florida, Massachusetts and New Orleans, Louisiana in her early years.

Alfred was an immigration officer / Chinese inspector. He worked in Massachusetts, all over Arizona,NewMexico,El Paso, Texas, and all alongtheMexicanborder.Trans- ferred to Florida, New Orleans, and New York.

Eldora lived in San Luis Obispo, California during his later transfers, with four of the children. The fifth child,Alfred, my father was sent to Massachusetts to live with relativesinWestboro,I believe. Alfred Sr was finally transferred to San Francisco to be near his family, where he died.

Eldora and Alfred had five children:

1. Eric Norman Griffin
b. 14 December 1898 in Massachusetts & died 23 August 1963 in Ojai, California

2. Ruth Florence Griffin - Glover
b. 01 March 1900, in Massachusetts & died 10 August 1980 in Santa Barbara, California

Ruth had 2 sons, Dustin & Marvin Glover, and possibly a third child

3. Dorothy Griffin - Ruiz
b. 29 August 1901, in Massachusetts & died September 1970 in Santa Barbara, California

4. Alfred Griffin
b. 07 January1906 in Yuma, Arizona & died September 1978 in Santa Barbara, California.

Alfred had 2 daughters, Aretta Griffin - Coffelt & Judy Griffin - McCartney

5. John William "Jack" Griffin
b. 25 March 1909, in Arizona & died November 1978, in Santa Barbara, California.

3 sons, Richard, Gerald, & Tommy Griffin

While it does appear that Eldora is the daughter of Wilson Hues Barlow, many questions remain, especially the maiden name of her mother, whom I have as "Allen". Can anyone shed further light on this family?

Notes from Susan

Some possibilities:

Mary A. Brown's mother's maiden name is "Allen", and the A initial we assume to be Ann, may really be Allen, or she may even have been married to a Brown prior to marrying Wilson Barlow, and her maiden name could really be Allen.

Perhaps Mary and Wilson divorced ... and she remarried to an Allen.

Perhaps Mary A. Brown has died prior to the 1900 census and Wilson may in fact be the same who married Mrs. Mary A. Alexander in 1894. The marriage certificate does not give ages for this couple, but if it is in fact our Wilson, he would have been very near 70 years old, and thus, I would think, Mary would also be at an upward age, and had been married prior to an Alexan-
der before marrrying Wilson, maybe her maiden name was Allen. Or ... perhaps she married an Allen after Wilson's death. We need to find a marriage record for Mary Allen and Mr. Alex- ander.

Never-the-less, she would have been a stepmother to Eldora, so this is unlikely.
