Richard Barlow of Canada From Barlow of Barlow Newsletter, February 1996 The following information is primarily obtained from a collection of papers by Samuel Atherton, a descendent of this Barlow line. This collection is located in the Hackley Public Library, 316 West Webster Street, Muskegon, Michigan. The information from this collection is supplemented and/or corroborated by information from other sources, which are indicated by notations in brackets. First Generation 1. Richard Barlow, a native of Yorkshire, England, came to Canada in 1758 with the English troops under General James Wolfe. He was wounded at the taking of Quebec and recuperated in a military hospital in New Brunswick. He was subsequently discharged and was granted a tract of land on the Oromocto River below Fredericton, New Brunswick. Richard Barlow married Miss N. Phillips, probably Abigail 'Nabby' Phillips. She was of United Empire Loyalist stock and they had two children, probably born at Fredericton, New Brunswick: i. George Barlow was born around 1765. He went to sea and never returned. 2. ii. William Barlow was born in 1767.
Second Generation 2. William Barlow was born in 1767 probably at his parent's home near Fredericton, New Brunswick. He died on May 05, 1847, on his farm at Binbrook, Hamilton-Wentworth, Ontario, and was buried in the Barlow Cemetery, a private family cemetery on his property at Binbrook. William Barlow married Mary Bedell. She was born on February 07, 1776, to a United Empire Loyalist family which had come from Staten Island, New York. She died on October 12, 1854, and was buried in the Barlow Cemetery at Binbrook.
William and Mary 'Bedell' Barlow had nine children, all born in New Brunswick: i. Susan Barlow was born on July 21,
1799. ii. Betsey Barlow was born in 1800.
3. iii. James Barlow was born in 1803. iv. Phoebe Barlow was born in 1805 at
Wakefield, New Brunswick [IGI]. v. Mary Barlow was born
on July 06, 1806. 4. vi. Richard Barlow was born in 1811. 5. vii. Stephen Barlow was born on August 02, 1815. 6. viii. William Barlow was born on March 31, 1817. ix. Catherine J. Barlow was born on
July 14, 1818. She married David Shaw on April 26, 1836.
Third Generation 3. James Barlow was born in 1803 near Fredericton, New Brunswick, and was a son of William and Mary 'Bedell' Barlow. He settled in county Wentworth, Ontario, in 1827 and moved to Walpole township, near Hagersville, Springvale, in 1842. He was the first white settler in that community and slept under his wagon until he could erect a house. He died in 1890 probably at his home near Springvale and was buried there. James Barlow married Susan Turtelot. She was born in Maine and died about 1866. They had four children: i. George Barlow was born on June 11, 1834, and died in July 1897 or 1898. ii. Nancy Barlow married James Husband. iii. Sarah Barlow married Joseph Husband. iv. Amanda Barlow married Marshall
Bartram. 4. Richard Barlow was
born in 1811 near Fredericton, New Brunswick, and was a son of William
and Mary 'Bedell' Barlow. He was a farmer and was recorded in county Wentworth
in the 1827 and 1875 directories. Richard Barlow married Rebecca
McCrimmon on September 17, 1837. She was born in 1817 and was
a daughter of John (1786-1877) and Ann 'Grooms' McCrimmon, who were married
in 1817. They had five children: i. Almira Barlow was born on July 27, 1839, and died on March 24, 1935. ii. Victoria Barlow was born on May
26, 1842. She did not marry. iii. Henry Barlow was born on January
17, 1845. Commemorative record: Henry Barlow, born January 17, 1845,
and married in 1868 to Mary A. Young Children - 1.) William W. born 1869 2.) Richard O. born 1870 3.) Ethel born 1872 4.) Stanley born 1874 1875 Henry and Mary moved to Essex County, Gosfield North 5.) Percival born 1876 6.) Henry H. born 1878 Henry Barlow was attached to the 19th and 77th Battalion during the Fenian Raids 1866 - Niagara Well respected and held in high esteem.
iv. Adoniram Judson Barlow was born
on June 29, 1851. v. Hasseltine (or Anhasilton) Barlow was born on February 18, 1855, and died on August 10, 1896. 5. Stephen Barlow was born on August 02, 1815, near Fredericton, New Brunswick, and was a son of William and Mary 'Bedell' Barlow. He died on November 11, 1862, at Binbrook, Ontario, during a typhoid epidemic and was buried in the Barlow Cemetery at Binbrook. Stephen Barlow married first Obedience Cook on October 06, 1839, at Binbrook, Ontario. She was born on May 11, 1820, and was a daughter of James and Sarah 'Waldron' Cook. She died on October 26, 1858, at Binbrook and was buried there in the Barlow Cemetery. They had eleven children: i. Charles Barlow was born on August 01, 1840, and died on May 24, 1908. ii. Sarah Barlow was born on November
24, 1841, and died on January 10, 1921. Sarah married Samuel E. Atherton on 29 March 1862. Children of Sarah and Samuel are: 1. Clara Amelia Atherton, born 19 January 1863 in Ontario Canada, and died in Barre New York, 2. Frederick Atherton born 22 June 1869 in Barre New York, 3. Lewis Atherton was born 31 August 1873 in Barre New York Letter
from S.E. Atherton of 665 Southern West, Muskegon Michigan to Archie
V. Arnold, a
great-grandson of Joseph Arnold, written in 1936, says:
"My paternal grandmother was Stephen Barlow's
eldest daughter, Sarah Barlow,
(1841-1921) She married S. G.
Atherton in 1862 and moved to Michigan
in
1883. Stephen Barlow's farm at Binbrooke,
Ontario Canada was purchased by a
Mr. Evans in 1886.
Their daughter married my father, T.B. Atherton in 1902. I, S.E. Atherton, was born on the Stephen Barlow farm in 1903." Additional
note: S.E. Atherton may have attended college in Muskegon Michigan.]
iii. William Albert Barlow was born
on May 24, 1843. iv. Mary Amelia Barlow was born on April
6, 1845. She did not marry. v. Martha Jane Barlow
was born on April 6, 1845. She died on December 18, 1845. vi. James Francis Barlow was born on
April 1, 1847, and died on October 15, 1915. vii. Lucy Melinda Barlow was born on
January 18, 1849, and died on October 17, 1934. viii. Richard Baxter Barlow was born
on December 26, 1850, and died on February 16, 1942. ix. Florilla Adelaide Barlow was born
on February 1, 1853, and died on November 17, 1930. x. Abiather (Bice) Barlow was born on
September 18, 1854, and died on August 28, 1936. xi. Jemima Barlow was born on March
26, 1856, and died on February 3, 1946. Stephen Barlow married second Eliza Robbins,
a widow, on December 25, 1860. 6. William Barlow was
born on March 31, 1817, near Fredericton, New Brunswick, and was a son
of William and Mary 'Bedell' Barlow. He settled at Binbrook, Ontario,
on 100 acres that was given to him by his father. William Barlow married first Hannah
McCrimmon. She was a sister of Rebecca, his brother Richard's
wife, and a daughter of John and Ann 'Grooms' McCrimmon. [The Tweedsmuir
History by Richard Barlow says that he married first Hannah Jackson.]
She died on July 4, 1841, at Binbrook. Their children were: i. Mary Ann Barlow married Henry
Bird. She died on January 10, 1908. ii. Rebecca Barlow possibly married
a Mr. Pither and they had no children. William Barlow married second Emaline
Currie of Glanford, Ontario, on November 18, 1845. Their children were: iii. Margaret Anne Barlow was born on
August 13, 1847, and died on March 20, 1932. iv. Eliza Jane Barlow was born on July
13, 1849, and died on December 12, 1943. v. Ira Hamilton Barlow
was born on December 13, 1853. He was recorded in county Wentworth in
the 1875 directory. He died on February 14, 1934. vi. Phoebe Barlow was born in December 1854 and died in infancy. vii. Stephen Barlow was born on May 17, 1856, and died in infancy. |
