Claude Willis Barlow, born
August 02, 1907 in Stafford Connecticut, and died January
21, 1976 in Worchester Massachusetts
Dr. Claude W. Barlow, 68, retired professor of classics
at Clark University, died Tuesday in The Memorial Hospital
after an illness. He lived at 22 Vincent Ave.
He retired in 1972 as professor emeritus after serving
on the Clark faculty since 1947 when he was named assistant
professor of classics. He was promoted to associate professor
in 1952 and to full professor in 1961. His special fields
of study were medieval Latin and Latin manuscripts.
Prior to his association with Clark, he held teaching
positions at Indiana University, Mount Holyoke College
and the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Barlow was a fellow of American Academy in Rome from
1935 to 1938 and held a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1946.
He was the author of numerous articles and book reviews
on classical subjects which were published in professional
journals. He also authored a book on the work of St. Martin
of Braga.
He leaves two brothers, Milton Barlow of Newington, Conn.,
and Robert Barlow of Fayetteville, Ga., a niece and several
nephews.

He was born in West Stafford, Conn., a
son of George and Myrtle (Willis) Barlow.
He attended Stafford High School, Stafford Springs, Conn.,
and was graduated from Amherst College with an A.B. degree.
He received his master's degree from Indiana University and
his doctorate in philosophy from Yale University in 1935.
He served as a corporal with the U.S. Air Force from 1942
to 1945 in World War II.
He was a nationally known authority on genealogy and had
written numerous pamphlets and articles for the American
Society of Genealogists. He was a contributing editor to
the American Genealogist magazine. As a professional genealogist,
he specialized in Worcester County and Massachusetts families.
He was a former president and secretary-treasurer of the
Classical Association of New England. He was a member of
the New England Genealogical Society, Massachusetts Society
of Mayflower Descendants, Connecticut Society of Genealogists,
the Huguenot Society of Massachusetts, Descendants of Old
Plimouth (sic) Colony, the Descendants of Roger Williams,
Connecticut Historical Society, Vermont Historical Society,
Rhode Island Historical Society, and Flagon and Trencher.
He was a member of the Second Congregational Church of
West Stafford, Conn., and for many years was historian
for the church.
He was a member of the American Classical League, the
Architectural Institute of America and Phi Beta Kappa.
At the time of his death he was adviser to Lambda Chapter,
Phi Betta Kappa at Clark.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Second
Congregational Church, Route 190, West Stafford. The Rev.
Russell Rowland will officiate. Burial will be in West
Stafford Cemetery, West Stafford.
Calling hours at Tocchetti Funeral Home, 200 West Main
St., Stafford Springs, are 7 to 9 tonight.
In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be
made to Second Congregational Church of West Stafford,
in care of the Rev. Russell Rowland.

Barlow
Born August 2, 1907, in Stafford, CT; died in January,
1976; son of George M. (a grocer) and Myrtie E. (Willis)
Barlow. Education: Amherst College, B.A., 1928; Indiana
University, M.A., 1930; Yale University, Ph.D., 1935; American
Academy in Rome, additional study, 1935-38. Military/Wartime
Service: U.S. Army Air Forces, 1942-45; became staff sergeant.

OF CLAUDE W. BARLOW
We regret to have to announce the death by heart attack
at Worcester, Mass., 21 Jan. 1976, of our valued Contributing
Editor, Dr. Claude W. Barlow, F.A.S.G. He was expert
on Worcester County genealogy and on Mayflower lines, having
done much work on the Five-Generation project. He was professor
emeritus of Classics at Clark University, a Fellow of the
American Academy in Rome, and a specialist, like the editor,
in the field of patristics, as well as a warm personal
friend. He will be much missed by his many friends and former
clients. He was born at Stafford Springs, Conn., 2 Aug.
1907, so was 68 years of age at his death. |
