Henry Barlow, son of
Jesse and Julia A. Knickerbocker Barlow |
Henry Barlow, Gs-146, was born on February
18, 1825, at Amenia, New York [HA], and was recorded living
with his parents at Amenia in the 1850
census and with his own family at Amenia in the 1860 census. He
died on December 24, 1903, at Hinsdale, Massachusetts [HA], and was buried in
the South Amenia Cemetery.
From Barlow & Allied Families: "Henry
Barlow moved to Amenia, New York, to Peru, Massachusetts,
in the highlands of the Berkshires, 1000
feet above sea level and in the fall of 1893, went to Hinsdale, Massachusetts. He
was known as a candid, frank man, was well informed, and was well liked by
all who knew him; but the money getting trait that is so well marked
in some families, was lacking in
him as well as in other branches of the Barlow family. His
father left him a comfortable property, but Henry Barlow went into the manufacturing business,
of which he knew nothing, and suffered financially, thereby."
From One Branch of the Barlow family, by Ruth
Elnora Barlow, 1964: Henry Barlow was born
and grew up on the family farm in Amenia, New York. He
had no special bent for farming, and decided to become
a lawyer. In
the early 1840's, he went to Madison County, New York, where
his father's oldest brother was a lawyer and judge. As was custom in those
days, he expected to "study
law" with his uncle, but after a couple of years, he also gave
up that plan. He returned
home to Amenia, and in time went into a small wood-working business with his
brother-in-law, Orville Benton.
This business apparently prospered
for awhile, but the financial panic of 1874 entirely
ruined it. The home
farm had meanwhile been sold, so after
a few years, Henry who now had a large growing familywas able to secure
a farm at a bargain in Peru, Massachusetts, to which place he moved
in 1877, and where he stayed
until his death in 1903."
"Henry Barlow held some public offices, both
at Amenia, and at Peru, but never to the extent
that his father and grandfather had done. He was well
read, and very interested in world affairs and scientific
advancement. He remarked the
last year of his life that he would like to live another fifty years
just to see what the scientist's would discover saying, ' They have just
scratched the surface.' Ill health
and advancing years finally forced him to give up active farming, and he
spent the last winter of his life with his son, William Benton Barlow,
in Hinsdale, Massachusetts. Soon afterward, William returned
to Amenia, and now none of the family live in that part of Massachusetts."
