I'm not sure who's child Alice is, but Pearlie and the son's are actually his daughter in law and grandchildren.

Dennis:  In the Application of John W. Barlow for Eastern Cherokee Benefits for a share of the money appropriated, under the place where he list his parents / grandparents: John W. Barlow shows his grandmother to be Sarah, daughter of Elizabeth, or Betsy Surles, and that Betsy was the daughter of Consider Bushee, a full blood Cherokee Indian. Not Sarah, daughter of Elizabeth, but Sarah, wife of Samuel Barlow.

SBH:  Perhaps she was Sarah Catherine.  From the census records, it does not appear that Samuel remarried.  Also, at the time of the application, 1907, Ransom was still alive, and I'm sure he knew who his mother was.  He would have been 22 at the time of her death.

Children of SAMUEL BARLOW and CATHERINE TURNER are:

2.
VIRGIL H. BARLOW3 born 1840, New York, and died December 18, 1873, Ellenville, New York.
3. JAMES RANSOM / RANSOM M. BARLOW born April 10, 1843, Ellenville, Ulster Co New York, and died November 16, 1918, Rudy, Crawford Co Arkansas

ALICE O. BARLOW born August 1845, Ellenville, New York, and died Lebanon, Laclede Missouri, after 1920.
She married JOHN ATKINS.  He died before 1880, and she did not remarry.  She is living with her sisters in 1880, 1900, and 1910 census. (see below)

LE GRAND BARLOW born April 04, 1847, Ellenville, New York died April 17, 1847, Ellenville, New York.
4.

CAROLINE A. 'CALLIE' BARLOW born June 18, 1847, (born February 1848, according to the 1900 census) Ellenville, New York, and died after 1920, probably in St. Louis Missouri  (SBH:  She could not have been born in June 1847, that is only two months after the birth of Le Grand.)

WARREN BARLOW born 1850, Ellenville, New York   I could not find Warren in any 1870 census.
5. MARY F. BARLOW born 1855, Ellenville, New York, and died between 1910-1920, probably in St. Louis Missouri
2.

6.

SAMUEL E. BARLOW, born c1865 in Missouri

RALPH BARLOW, born January 1867 in Missouri  (some conflicts in his middle initial, it is shown as W., E., and F. in different census records)

In 1900, age 33, he is single, living with his aunt, Mary Lobsinger in St. Louis.   I find a Ralph Barlow, age 44, in 1910 Ralls Co Missouri, but he shows himself and both parents to be born in Illinois.  He is a boarder in the Combs family home.

GEORGE M. BARLOW, born January 1869 in Missouri    Living in his mothers home at age 31 in 1900, and in 1910, in his mother's home, age 39.  (see above)   I could not locate him in 1920.   Purlitta and Thomas Arnold are most likely deceased at that time.
3.
JAMES RANSOM /RANSOM M. BARLOW3 (SAMUEL2, JOSEPH WARREN1) was born April 10, 1843 in Ellenville, Ulster Co New York, and died November 16, 1918 in Rudy, Crawford Co Arkansas.

He married MARY EDITH ROBERTSON October 23, 1865 in Smithfield North Carolina, daughter of THOMAS ROBERTSON and ELIZABETH HEPSY / BETSY SURLES.  She was born June 03, 1851 in Cumberland Co North Carolina, and died January 03, 1929 in Rudy, Crawford Co Arkansas.

Doyle Coleman said that most of these Barlows settled in or around Rudy Arkansas, that they were also in or around Similoe and Sand Springs Oklahoma. He also said that Mary was a full blood Cherokee Indian and that she was from South Carolina and that Ransom Barlow was from New York.

Part of a letter dated 1979 from Ann Russell in Tulsa, Oklahoma, contributed by Leona Muckelroy

My gggrandmother, Mary Edith Robertson, married James Ransom Barlow. He served in the Civil War and while he was campaigning in Smithfield, N.C. he met Mary and they got married. He was born April 10, 1843, Ellenville, New York.  The story told for years in the family is that when he married Mary Edith Robertson, the family disowned him because she was full blood Cherokee, which she was, and looked. So, because of this, he never returned home.

I do have a letter that has been given to me from an aunt of his telling him to please come home because his father had died and his mother was very ill, it was signed by a C.E. Batsford.

This is all the information I have, except that they moved all over Arkansas and never stayed in one place very long.   Mary Edith had a brother that moved with them to Arkansas, his name was J.A. Robertson, I can't find a trace of him anywhere

In a letter written by Elaine Musick of Cibolo Texas - 1982 contributed by Leona Muckelroy

I have heard lots of rumors, and that is all they are, I do not now them to be true or not. I have been told that James Ransom may have at one time been legal heir to some 2 or 3 blocks in downtown New York, and that some of the family at one time, tried to claim it.

He was a volunteer for the state of New York in the Civil War.

It is rumored that he may have killed a man in New York, and was more or less on the run.  It is also thought that he may have at one time worked for the railroad. When he moved to Arkansas, it is said he was a dirt farmer.

It is also said that James and Mary were separated, and that is the reason they are buried in different cemeteries.   Someone at one time even questioned if they were ever legally married.

I was unable to positively locate this family in 1870.  The following may or may not be his family.  The image is not very clear.

Claim of Mary E. Barlow, Widow of Ransom Barlow and is an Affidavit of J.A. Robertson   Filed by, Joseph H. Hunter, Attorney at Law

State of Arkansas Ouachita County  In the Matter of Mary E. Barlow

On the 30th of December 1918, J.A. Robertson, age 72 resident of Lauann, Ouachita County, Arkansas

The above J.A. Robertson states that he has known Ransom Barlow and Mary E. Barlow ever since their marriage. That he was present at ther marriage ceremony. He also states that neither of the parties had ever been previously married, and that they lived together as man and wife continuously till the death of the soldier. The reason the said J. A. Robertson is able to make the above statement is because he is the brother of the said Mary E. Barlow and as such brother know the facts as stated from his own personal knowledge. He further states that Mary E. Barlow has not remarried since the soldier's death.

Signed by J.A. Robertson and Quinency Murphy, Notary Public

Claimant's Affidavit

In the matter of Mary E. Barlow, widow of Ransom Barlow 27th of August 1919   Mary Barlow, age 68, a resident of Rudy, Crawford Co Arkansas - #1133093

I, Mary E. Barlow am the widow of Ransom Barlow. I was married to him when I was 14 years old at Smithfield, Johnson County, North Carolina. We moved from there the next year and have been moving off and on ever since. We never have been back and have had no people to correspond with. That is 53 years ago and there is not a soul I know who to write to, for this reason, I can not furnish the testimony of persons who can testify that I lived from the date of my marriage until his death of my husband, other than J.A. Robertson who is the only living witness to my marriage and my eldest daughter Alice Tyer. I am the Mother of L.S. Barlow who served in the war just closed. He enlisted at Van Buren Arkansas, 28th day of August and was discharged at Camp Pike the 15th day of March 1919. He served in C.A. 12th regiment Division 8. He has no claim on the government, I can further say, I and my husband were never parted; neither were we ever divorced but lived together from marriage until his death.

Where Mary is to sign, it has "Her Mark" X and what appears to be her signature   On the form there in small print is " if affiants sign by mark, two persons who can write, sign here."   It appears to be witnessed by Chorlie Hobbs and Maurice Ballestro.

Dennis notes:   This leads me to believe that Mary couldn't write legibly or maybe not at all

For some reason, Mary lived with her sisters, Louis was not in any of the census except 1880.  All records show them to be married, perhaps he traveled around with his work.  The 1880 census shows him working for the railroad, while the 1920 census shows him to be a bookkeeper in the cooperage.

Children of MARY BARLOW and LOUIS LOBSINGER are:

ELMOND E. LOBSINGER, born c1877 in Missouri  (I could not locate him in 1910-1920)

My gr-grandmother on my mother's side is Mary Alice Barlow. Mary was born October 09, 1866 in Dunn, Johnston Co North Carolina.  She married Wesley Sweeny Tyer on December 20, 1885 in Perry Township, Perry Co Arkansas. Mary and Wesley had 8 children who were all born in Polk Co Arkansas.

Mary died June 01, 1933 in Jenks Oklahoma, and is buried in Broken Arrow Oklahoma.

I was talking to my grandmother about our family and she brought up a Mary Alice Ransom Barlow. I want to know is if any of the information given to me is correct.  I was told that Mary Alice Ransom Barlow was Cherokee Indian and was married to a man from NY. However, her husband had to go back to NY and because she was Indian, she was not allowed to go. But he left her some land, where I don't know.  After her husband was gone she met John Wesley Tyer. They married and lived in Arkansas. Later moved to Redmond, Oklahoma, then moved to Jenks, Oklahoma.

Children of MARY BARLOW and WESLEY TYER are:

  JAMES M. TYER
  CORA B. TYER
10. JOHN WESLEY TYER, JR.
  WILLIAM SPENCER TYER
  CHARLES EVERETTE TYER

JOHN WESLEY BARLOW4 (RANSOM3, SAMUEL2, JOSEPH WARREN1) was born May 19, 1878 in Arkansas, and died in 1950, in California.

He married LEONA /LEE c1904

Note: Dennis shows that John was married to Maggie. However, in John's application for Eastern Cherokee benefits, he states his wife is Leona. She may be Maggie Leona, or Leona Maggie, or perhaps Maggie is a second wife. Will need more research.
