SOLOMON NYE BARLOW6 (LEVI 5, THOMAS 4, PELEG 3, NATHAN 2, GEORGE 1) was born 1780 in Massachusetts, and died March 1866 in Whiteside Co Illinois

He married SYRENA NYE August 14, 1851 in Sandwich Barnestable Co Massachusetts, daughter of EBENEZER NYE and SYRENA DIMMICK

When Charles lived in Sandwich Massachusetts, he was a whaler.  Something spurred him to move with the gold rush. I haven't been able to learn whether he participated in the Civil War. Since his family was seafaring, and I have found records to support this trail in cousins of his, I suspect that he and his family were taken by ship to one side of the Isthmus of Panama, and the family walked across. Charles and his family settled in Bath, Placer Co California. Bath suffered a major fire, and was never rebuilt. The nearest town is Foresthill.

Chester, Charles' son was a professional photographer, and it is speculated that this was a professional shot taken by his son, on the site where he was panning, probably about 1890.

The beautiful suburban residence of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Brown at Oak Grove, near Mayfield, was the scene of a charming and quiet wedding last Wednesday, when their niece, Miss Ada S. Barlow was united in marriage to Dr. D.C. Elliott. The occasion was one that will long be remembered by all who were present as a most pleasant and enjoyable affair.

Each room was tastily* decorated with a selection of choice flowers and evergreens, whose sweet perfume served to spread an Edenic beauty over the scene. As two chimes from the brazen clock on the mantel announced the hour of 2, the bride and groom were ushered into the sitting room by the bridesmaid and bridesman. The bride was attired in a beautiful dress of gray crepe, draped with white lace. A pyramid of flowers occupied the center of the floor, with white ribbon gracefully streaming to one corner of the room, and beneath this the couple and their attendants took their positions. Rev. E.J. Gillespie of San Jose then tied the knot which was to link the happy couples fortunes for ever. Miss Anne Durkee of Warm Springs was bridesmaid, while B.L. Carpenter of San Francisco acted in the capacity of best man.

After the ceremony, congratulations were showered upon Mr. and Mrs. Elliott by their many friends present, and all were then shown into the dining room, where tables loaded with the delights of the inner man called forth the admiration of all. These dainty viands were done justice to, after which toasts to the welfare of the bride and groom were proposed by Mrs. F.L. Southwick. The first was responded to in appropriate and witty words by Rev. Gillespie and D.L. Sloan, while Mrs. D.L. Sloan responded to the letter.

A short time was spent in social converse, when Mr. and Mrs. Elliott were driven to Mayfield accompanied by their friends, and after the usual farewells they boarded the 5 o'clock train for San Francisco. Thursday morning they left for an extended bridal tour to Michigan, Massachusetts and Connecticut. They were the recipients of many handsome and costly presents, the proof of the esteem in which they are held.

Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. D.C. Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Brown, Mrs. F.L. Southwick, Mrs. Fitzell, Miss Helen Elliott and Ed Southwick of Oak Grove; Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Sloan, Miss Jennie Boulware, Menzo S. Loucks of Mayfield; Mrs. William Rowe, Miss Gertie Bubb, Zacariah Martin and Alfred W. Dow of Mountain View, Miss Bertha Hall and Miss Willard of Cupertino, B. L. Carpenter of San Francisco, Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Pitman, Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Gillespie, Mrs. S.M. Barlow and Chester Barlow of San Jose, Miss Anne Durkee of Warm Springs, Mrs. George Childs, Miss Lulu Childs, and Mrs. A.G. Nye of Oakland.

Miss Barlow was well known in this city, having served as teacher during the last school term in the First ward school, while she very successfully taught several terms at Mountain View. Dr. Elliott is a prominent dentist in Concord, Contra Costa County, while both are graduates of the State Normal School of this city of the class of '87.

Mr. and Mrs. Elliott go forth on life's sea with the most flattering prospects before them, while their many friends unite in extending to them their sincere wishes for a happy and prosperous life's voyage. On their return from the East, Dr. and Mrs. Elliott will locate at Concord, Contra Costa County.

I don't know how Mr. And Mrs. W.W. Brown happen to be aunt and uncle to my great grandmother. I believe that the Southwicks were related also, but don't know how. I question the Mrs. S.M. Barlow, as I don't have an S.M. Barlow. It could be Solomon NYE Barlow Jr.'s wife, as I have no information on where they lived. Chester is Ada Spencer Barlow's brother, the photographer. Mrs. George Childs is sister to Charles Bennett Barlow's wife, Syrena Nye. Lulu, I would guess to be her daughter. A.G. Nye was Syrena's brother.
