Cochran man dies in early-morning blaze 06/11/04 Stephanie Miller COCHRAN - A Cochran man lost his life in his home from a fire early this morning. According to Cochran Fire Chief Glenn Lord, Barney Barlow, 56, of Route 2 Box 491, Cochran, died from smoke inhalation following a fire in the bedroom where he was sleeping at about 2 a.m. today. Lord said the fire appeared to have been accidental in Barlow’s single-wide mobile home located on the Old Eastman Highway. “His wife was there asleep in the back bedroom,” said Lord, adding Barlow was in another bedroom with the door closed. “The smoke detector woke her up.” Lord said Barlow attempted to get out of the room but fell in front of the bedroom door after being overcome with smoke inhalation, barricading himself in, preventing his wife from rescuing him. After firefighters arrived they were able to contain the fire to the bedroom area. Lord said he believes he has determined how the fire started and it would be considered accidental. However, he said it was too late for Barlow. Lord said Barlow’s wife had done all she could. “She tried to get him out,” said Lord.
