SUMTER COUNTY GEORGIA

Myra    January  2000
I am looking for info on Edith / Edie / Eda Barlow born 1834 in Alabama, moved with family to Georgia at an early age.
She was married in Sumter Co Georgia September 18, 1851 to John Phillips who was born 1825 in North Carolina.
They moved to Alabama where their first 5 children were born then moved back to Georgia by 1860.

They are listed in the 1860 Georgia census:

Notes from  Susan BARLOW Holmes:
Thru this all, I believe I have found the general line of Barlows from which Edy comes, but still no name for her father.
I believe the census record below to be her mother and siblings, though a few grown siblings may have already married and left home.

This census record was almost illegible...at first I thought the surname was Barton.

Mr. Barlow has probably died at a young age, though a divorce is also a possibility.

I feel sure that Edy's mother was Elisabeth, as I had previously thought while reading the 1850 census records.
I believe Edyann is the same as Edy shown in Myra's query.

It appears that Edyann may possibly be a twin to Wilson Barlow.

Sumter Co marriage records show Edy to also be Edith Barlow, probably Edith Ann, and Edyann as a nickname.

Also shown in the marriage index is Wilson H. Barlow marrying Mary Ann Brown on January 02, 1862 in Sumter Co Georgia

Another thing I might check is the possibility that Elizabeth Barlow's maiden might have been Wilson.

I have not found in any of the marriage records available in the Clearinghouse, an Elizabeth to have married a Barlow in Alabama or Georgia to fit the time frame of this family.

Other Barlows  shown in the census records of Sumter Co, all in the Americus District, makes me believe that these are of the same line of Barlow's and from what I have learned thus far, I believe these will all be from the  Isle of Wight Virginia line of Barlows.   Other Barlows in this line  are known to have lived in Butts, Stewart, Marion, Laurens and Decatur Co Georgia and prior to that they were known to have been in Alabama, (Autagua, Pike and Lowndes Co's for sure), Edgefield District, South Carolina, Wake Co, North Carolina and Isle of Wight, Virginia.

Anderson, Thomas, Wade and Dr. W.W. Barlow -

Taking into consideration the varying ages from year to year seen on census records, I think it is a very good possibility that the William in the following record is Edyann's brother.

Anderson Barlow had moved to Marion Co Georgia by the 1860 census, and other Barlows shown in that county are said to be his children.

Wade J. and William H. Barlow  -

The Wilson H. Barlow shown in the following record is probably the brother/possible twin of Edyann Barlow.

Note that many of these families also went found in Florida.

As I find more information, I will enter it into this page.   If any other facts are known about these families, I would surely appreciate them, as I am sure researchers would.  ... Thanks, Susan ...

Perhaps one good source for information would be  Virginia.
She has done a lot of research on the Thomas and Richard Barlow families of Isle of Wight, Virginia and Laurens Co Georgia.

Another very good source is Clinton D. Barlow, who does not have e-mail..but could very well be worth the price of a postage stamp...as he is considered, from what I have heard; to be a professional genealogist, and has done considerable work on this particular line of Barlows.

Virginia's Barlows.....Thomas & Richard of Laurens Co Georgia

I just looked at the Florida info and was surprised to see my Grandfather, GEORGE MILTON BARLOW, and two of his brothers, Arthur Wellsley and Howard Sanders listed.   I have more info on George and a little on Arthur and Howard.

George, Arthur, and Howard were the sons of Simon S. and Lola Williamson Barlow
- all sons born in Lumpkin, Stewart Co Georgia.
According to the 1900 census, Howard was born in May, 1893 - not 1895.  I don't know who this Eldridge was -1897, but Simon S.'s brother was named Eldridge, so probably son of Arthur?  My grandfather moved to Orlando, Orange Co Florida,  sometime before the 1910 census, and  married my grandmother, Ollie Mae Quigg, c1911.

I had Barlows in Laurens County back before 1850.
Thomas Barlow had several children, one of which was Olive Barlow.
She married Thomas Warren Hart in 1818 and moved to Louisiana and then Texas.
