The information that was left by my ggrandmother, Frances Ann Robertson, is handwritten in pencil in an old book of Bible Readings. I've tried unsuccessfully to photocopy it, or have it professionally copied, but the results have been unreadable. The pencil has faded so much that it is difficult to read, and apparently impossible to copy. Each of my family would like a copy, but that appears to be unlikely at this point. Perhaps some type of technology that is available will resolve the problem. I will continue to pursue this. With the assistance of several from the Barlow family website and our own family records, I have been able to piece together a reliable picture of Mary Ann Barlow's family. It is my understanding from internet postings that there are actual letters written by John Smith Barlow to his three daughters (Mary Ann, Malinda, and Permelia) who had moved to Benton County, Missouri. Apparently the owner of those letters has died, and I have no idea who to contact to see if the letters still exist.
Mary Ann, a twin, was the daughter of John Smith Barlow of Monroe County, Kentucky. It appears there is considerable confusion as to whom Mary Ann's mother was. Some sources cite her as Lydia Hagan, and others, Frances Kincheloe. My inquiries to Monroe County have not produced any evidence one way or the other. Apparently there is a marriage record for Lydia Hagan and John Smith Barlow, but I have not seen a primary source yet. I have elected to go with the Hagan citation for the reason that my gr-grandmother, Mary Ann's daughter, referred to her family in Kentucky as the Hagans. There was never any mention of Kincheloes to any of my family's recollection. Based upon that oral family history, it appears that Lydia Hagan is the most probable candidate for being the mother of Mary Ann Barlow. Mary Ann's first husband, John Addison Bailey, died and left her with three children. She remarried John Hopkins Robertson, and had six more children. This occured in Benton County, Missouri. My ggrandmother married William Woods Foster, and moved to California about 1880. The rest of the family line is easily documented. Mary Ann's sister, Permelia, married a brother of Mary Ann's first husband, (John Bailey) Edward K. Bailey. So we have Barlow sisters marrying Bailey brothers. Not uncommon, for sure. |

'John Smith Barlow was born near Fountain Run, Kentucky. Lived in Barren County and in Monroe County, Kentucky. He received a good school training in early life and for a few years engaged in teaching, but developed more than ordinary ability in affairs of public life. He live on East Fork of Indian Creek in Monroe County. His early mahood life needs further research. He was either married or had a mistress prior to his marriage to Jane Hart Howard. He moved from Barren County to Monroe County in 1818. Marriage records in Washington County, Kentucky, list John Barlow and Francis Kinchloe married Feberary 4, 1820.
Linda Lois Wilcox, Elverta, California, a descendant of his early marriage writes: John Smith Barlow had a mistress from England or Pensylvania Dutch and the had three daughters. Letters in her possession written by John Smith to his first three daughters living in Missouri leave no doubt as to their proof and existence.
After marriage to Jane Hart Howard he settle on a farm on the North Fork of Indian Creek in Monroe County. He was owner of a large number of slaves and a large amount of land.
He was exceedingly smart and unsually quick. He had the sweetest and most persuasive of voices and his manners and bearing were never surpassed by an English Lord.
In 1826 he purchased one half of the sheriff-ship of Monroe County. Upon the expiration of his term of office in 1828, he was elected to the lower house of the Kentucky Legislature. He was then elected Senator from Clinton, Monroe, and Cumberland Counties and had to wait until the next year to take office untile he became of eligible age. He served with distintion in the two house of the State Legislature for 27 years. He was twice nominated for Lieutenant Governor of the State.
He was Senator from Barren County from 1871-1875, and House of Representatives from 1861-1863. He resigned February 7, 1862. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1849 and one of Breckenridge's electors in 1860.
He was active in the reorganization of the Democratic Party in Kentucky after the close of the Civil Was in the Convention held in Louisville. In that convention he had the honor of placing Alvin Duvall in nomination for Judge of the Court of Appeals, to which office he was elected in 1866. This circumstance he remembers as one of the most pleasant reminiscences of his life.
He was moderator of six seperate religious discussions.
In 1852 he was the President of the Glasgow branch of the Louisville and Nashville Railway.
In December 1853, he moved to Glasgow and in the fall of 1854 bought and moved to a fine farm eight miles north of Glasgove and called it 'Hay Hill.'
He has been a man of very strict habits in life, has never used spiritous ligquors or tobacco in any form; has always been blessed with health and in all his official career has never failed to be in his place when duty called him. He has always been a straight Democrat, and never took a new daparture or lost sight of the landmarks of his party.
Through untiring energy, and an excellent business ability, Mr. Barlow has acquired a fine property, a part of which is his home place of 1000 acres in Barren County.
He was married, February 10, 1831, to Miss Jane H. Howard, a daughter to Major Harmon Howard, of Barren Co. She was a member of the Baptist Church, and departed this life December 16, 1863, leaving eight children.
The subject of this sketch died March 15, 1886, in the eight fourth year of his age, and was buried at his home in the presence of a very large concourse of friends.' |

One of the family remembrances of Fannie (Frances, called 'Little Grandma Foster' by her grandchildren) is that she smoked a corn cob pipe. She claimed that her mother (Mary Ann Barlow) would send her to fetch a hot coal to light her own pipe when Frances was young, and to do so she would have to draw on the pipe to get it lit. This apparently got her started smoking the pipe at a young age, and in the family tradition, she maintained it her entire life.
Frances made many quilts by hand, especially in her old age. They still exist in great condition.
William Woods Foster and Frances Ann (Robertson) Foster came from Benton Co Missouri, near the Osage River and moved to the sand hills near Santa Maria, California. Foster Road is now there and marks the site of where their ranch was originally.
Frances Ann had two sons by a former marriage to Robertson, Joseph Newton Robertson and a son named Johnny. Johnny died of black fever and is buried in Benton County, Missouri. It is thought that her first husband, Robertson, died of black fever and is buried in Benton County, Missouri, as well.
William Woods had two children by a former marriage. Nora Foster, and a son that died when small. According to Adelma Lewis, Frances Ann came to care for William Wood's wife who was ill. His first wife died, and he married Frances Ann.
The 1860 US Census lists William Wood Foster, age 14, with sister, Elizabeth Foster, age 13, living with Julia Story, a farmer, age 25 in Speedwell, St. Clair Co Missouri. Additional children in the household were Joseph, 4; Edward, 3; and America, 1.
The 1870 US Census lists William W. Foster, age 22, a farm laborer, born in Missouri, living in Green Hickory, Missouri, Post Office Elkton, with George Elliot, age 29, a farmer, and other family members.
The 1880 US Census lists William W. Foster, age 35, a farmer , with both mother and father born in Missouri. Married to Frances A., age 24, father Missouri, mother born in Kentucky. Children are Joseph R. age 7, and Ellenora (Nora) age 8. Census shows they lived next to the Smart family, with the next residence over being Mary A. Robertson, age 49, with Felix C., 23; Hatler, 19; Smith J., 16; and Mary M. 15. This most likely would be Frances Ann's mother and family. The Smart Family was related by marriage to Frances Ann's family.
The 1910 US Census lists William Woods Foster, age 62 in Township 6, Santa Barbara Co California (outside Santa Maria) , Frances Ann, 56, born in Missouri; Joseph N., 36, Missouri; Clifford, 22, California; William J., 20, California; Mary F., 18, California; Charles T., 16, California, and Carl M., 13, California. Their neighbor was Frank Drum, 25; Leilia, wife, 23; and Unice, daughter, 1 yr; and Lyman, son, age 2 months. This is the Drum Family of Marian Drum, who married James Malcom Foster.
The 1920 US Census lists William Woods Foster, 73, Frances Ann, 66, living in Los Alamos, Santa Barbara Co California.44,44Frances Ann lists father born in Virginia, mother in Kentucky.
While living in Los Alamos, it was William's job to meet the train at the Depot, load the mail in a cart, and take it across to the Post Office. These were all within walking distance of his house, which was located on the main street. He and Frances maintained a large garden (nearly an acre) and a smoke house for meat at their home there.
It is said that Wiliam Woods was a very quiet man. kind, an incredibly hard worker, and not one for alot of conversation. He moved his family from Benton County, Missouri, to Santa Maria, California about 1880. Stories of the difficulties of that trip by wagon were seldom spoken of by the family. It is assumed that the lure of free land being offered in Santa Maria was the attraction. However, in studying the history of Santa Maria, it appears that upon arrival the Fosters may have been taken back some by the desolation of the place. Treeless sand dunes comprised the majority of the desolate and undeveloped Santa Maria Valley at that time. Santa Maria was extremely small, and there were few residents. The area was part of Spanish Land Grants, and Indians were stil to be seen living nearby. One of the family stories recalls that as the Fosters were travelling up the coast of California from the Los Angeles area to Santa Maria, their wagon was nearly washed away at high tide along the area south of Santa Barbara called the Rincon. Building a house for the family, with lumber virtually unavailble, and starting a farm in such desolate and incompatible conditons must have taken a toll on the family. Several children died young and were buried in the nearby Orcutt Cemetery. The lack of abundant water, and serious drought conditions made farming in this area difficult at that time. Today the Valley is built up and proseperous. The site of the original farm off what is now called Foster Road is developed mostly in tract housing today. These hardy pioneers paid an enormous price in contributing to the development of the area as it now exists.
William Woods had served in the War (presumed the Civil War) and received a small military pension in his old age. He told of going off to War at a very young age, and was given the job of carrying water to the troops. The pension was the only income he and Frances had in their old age, and their ranch and home in Santa Barbara County had been sold by their son, Cliff, who managed to forget to give them the money. The lived with their son, Jack's family in Bellflower, California, on Olive Street for some time, and then moved to live with their son, James, in Long Beach, California, where they died.
William Woods at the age of 93, and Frances, at 95. They were obviously very strong people.
When Frances Ann Robertson married William Woods Foster, she already had a son, Joseph Newton Robertson, who was about 3 years old. William Woods Foster, already had a daughter, Ellenora Foster, who was about 6 years old. Apparently his first wife had been sickly, and died. Frances Ann had possibly come in to care for the first wife before her death.

JOSEPH NEWTON7 ROBERTSON (FRANCES ANN6, MARY ANN5 BARLOW, JOHN SMITH4, AMBROSE3, ADAM2, CHRISTOPHER1) was born 12 May 1874 in Benton Co Missouri, and died 16 Dec 1953 in Redlands, San Bernardino Co California.
He married (1) KALULA MAY LEDFORD 19 Jul 1900 in Yuma, Yuma Co Arizona, daughter of CALVIN LEDFORD and WELMET HOBSON. She was born 11 Aug 1868 in Jefferson Co Iowa, and died 03 Nov 1943 in Redlands, San Bernardino Co California, burial in Hillside Cemetery, Redlands, San Bernardino Co California
He married (2) LOLA KING 08 Mar 1944 in Redlands, San Bernardino Co California. She was born 25 Mar. |
| |
1910 US Census in Redlands, San Bernardino Co California lists Joseph, 39, as a Teamster. Incidates Wilmet Newlin, 64, divorced, living next door. Joe Robertson, married once, born in Missouri. Lula M., 42, married 2 times, born in Iowa. Minnie M. 7, born in California. Inez L., 3, born in California. Mabel Miles, step-daughter, 19, born in Kansas (incorrect); Rollin, step-son, 17, born in Kansas; Roy, 15, step-son, born in California.
Joe Robertson, was known as Robison. (No evidence of a legal name change has been found to date.) He was the son of Frances Ann, about 3 years old, when she married William Woods Foster in Benton Co Missouri. It's interesting that his brother, Jack Foster (William Jackson Foster) ending up marrying Joe's step daughter, Mabel Miles (Mettie Mabel Miles). This linked both sides of the family tree. Joe and Lula May had two daughers of their own, Minnie and Inez.
Following the death of his wife, Kalula May, in 1943, Joe married Lola King in 1944. He was married to her when he died in 1953. He continued living in Redlands, but moved to Yucaipa with Mrs. King where he died. The family was not notified of his death until after his burial. Mrs. King and her family inherited all that Kalula May and Joe left upon their passing, which consisted primarily of the home on Washington Street and furnishings, in Redlands.
There are family members who state that they were told by Frances Ann that her son, Joseph Newton was a full blood brother to William Jackson Foster. The would make his biological father William Woods Foster. This appears likely.
Residence: 1930, Redlands, San Bernardino, California 176
KALULA MAY LEDFORD:
1910 US Census in Redlands, California lists Kalula May, 42, as a Packer in the packing house. While living in Redlands at 1012 Washington St., Lula May attended the Assembly of God Church on Orange Street, and later the Fourquare Church. She lived in the same home in Redlands for over forty years.
Medical Information: Miles children vaccinated February 9, 1899.
Residence: 17 May 1891, Moved to Redlands, California
Marriage Notes for JOSEPH ROBERTSON and KALULA LEDFORD:
Records kept by Frances Ann Robertson Foster indicate that she spelled her married name to her first husband 'Robertson.' Records kept by Kalula May Ledford Miles indicate that when she married Frances Ann Robertson Foster's son, Joseph Newton Robertson, she spelled the last name 'Robinson' and on several occasions 'Robison'. This accounts for the difference in spelling between the daughters, Minnie and Inez Robinson, from that of their father, Joseph Newton Robertson. A lot of research will be required to determine what is actually the correct legal spelling of Joseph Newton Robertson's last name. |

WILLIAM JACKSON FOSTER:
Jack worked as a butcher at Max King's grocery store in Los Alamos Co California, around age 18. After marrying Mabel in 1912, Jack moved his young family of three girls out to Casmalia, California. Somewhat later,he returned to work as Foreman of Ranch #3 on the Doheny Ranch, outside Los Alamos about two miles towards Santa Maria. It was while living in Los Alamos that his oldest daughter, Dorothy, started school. Myrel and Myrtle were about three years old. Around 1923, he moved to Long Beach, California, at the invitation of his brother, Jim, and began working in the oil fields. The family soon moved to Bellflower, California, about 1926, where their son William Joseph was born, and the family was raised. Jack and Mabel lived there for many years, where they attended the Christian Church, and later the Assembly of God Church at Olive and Ardmore. His parents, William and Fanny lived with them on Olive Street for some time, and then they later moved to Long Beach and lived with their son, Jim. Jack continued working for the oil company, and retired from Texaco about age 65.
Jack's school teacher in Santa Maria was 'Aunt' Meg Richardson. She taught Jack and his brothers/sisters at Washington School in the Santa Maria Valley.
During the Los Alamos residence, where Jack's parents lived, Jack and Mabel attended to small local church in town. It was during that time that a production of a 'Tom Thumb Wedding' was planned at the local church. The visiting play director thought it would be cute to have Jack's twin girls, Myrel and Myrtle, ages about 4 years, in the wedding. Myrtle was the bride, and Myrel had rehearsed the part of a bridesmaid. When time for the performance arrived, Myrel cried and would not participate. Each participant had been promised a bowl of ice cream following the performance. Jack made arrangements to buy Myrel a bowl, even though she did not participate in the performance.
While living out at Doheny Ranch #3, Cliff, Jack's brother, made an appearance dressed as Santa Claus for the Christmas celebration. Jack's twin girls received matching doll buggies and dolls from Santa that year.
The nearest town to Los Alamos for major purchases was Santa Maria. There was an occasion when Mabel decided to drive the wagon into town for some purchases. Jack had hitched up the most gentle horses he had, but they managed to run away with Mabel and her three girls anyway. Mr. Treelore, one of Jack's workers saw the runaway wagon and managed to ride alongside and get it stopped. He then climbed aboard and returned the team, with its greatly frightened cargo, back to the ranch.
Leading out of Los Alamos, passed the school and cemetery, is Drum Canyon Road. This is the road that leads to where Frank and Lilah Drum had a ranch.
The Drums had been neighbors of the Fosters in Santa Maria, and maintained a life-long friendship between the families. The Drum Ranch no longer has any remaining buildings, and the land is farmed for grain and beans. During the time that the Drums lived there the ranch never had any electricity. A large pump engine was used to provide water for the family, sheep, pigs and cattle. Lilah did hold several oil leases on the property, and several wells that produced oil had been drilled. She was paid small monthly payments for the oil. The Drums remained on the ranch until the early 1970's. The ranch was managed by Helen, Lilah's daughter, and her husband, Manual Perry, and their children. Following Lilah's death, the ranch was sold by her son.
The 1930 US Census finds William J. Foster with wife, Mabel, and family living on Olive Steet, in Downey, Twp. Bellflower Pct., Los Angeles, California. Home owner, value of real estate $6500; Occupation listed as Truck Driver in the Oil Fields.
Residence: 1930, 617 Olive St., Bellflower, California181
METTIE MABEL MILES:
1910 US Census in Redlands, California, lists Mabel, 19, as working in a Miliner's Shop, and born in Kansas.
While living in Los Alamos, one of Mabel's closest friends was Juaquina Pico (de la Guerra). She kept Mabel's young girls when Jack had pneumonia. Juaquina continued living in Los Alamos until her death, ca. 1975,
Occupation: 1910, Miliner's Shop in Redlands, California Residence: 1930, 617 Olive St., Bellflower, California183
Jack and Mabel were married at her mother's home in Redlands, California on Washington Street. When the minister asked Jack for his marriage license, he took it off the piano to discover it had been replaced with a horse license. The minister commented that it was a funny license to get married with. Married by Rev. Lucas
