Patricia Sue Barlow Tedder    April 2000

My great-grandparents were John Wood Barlow and Lydia May Gravelle of Quincy Illinois. His parents were Joseph Choteau Barlow and Eveline Streeter.

I also am looking for anyone descended from this line as my dad has three cousins with whom he lost contact in childhood.

Violet "Jestis" Burns     September 1999

Looking for Mary Jane Barlow born October 15, 1855 and died August 28, 1885 of consumption in the home of William McOwen, 220 Fifth Ave in Joliet.

She married William Purdy Barnes, on October 20, 1875 in Joliet Will Co Illinois. The marriage license says she was from Joliet.

William was born July 03, 1852 and died August 1878. They had a son, Jesse Frank Barnes, born to them in 1876 in Joliet, Illinois.

Jesse was 9 when last parent died. He was raised by his paternal grandparents, Matthew and Mary Jane "Purdy" Barnes of Joliet. He went to Silver Creek, Nebraska about 1890 with his Aunt Ermina who married Frank Bump of Joliet. He later lived in Montana.

The Barnes family in Joliet moved there from Haverstraw, Rockland Co New York, so it may be that Mary Janes family followed a similar route.

I looked for Mary Jane Barlow in the Will County census of 1870 but so many of the pages of the census were simply unreadable - she and her family may be there but with over a third of the census washed and bleached and hung to dry .... Can anyone shed light to the parentage of Mary Jane Barlow? Thanks

Mike Biken  July 1999

Royal BARLOW was born in 1846, in Illinois, according to census... possibly listed as Robert, married to a Kelsey. I found him in Richardson Co Nebraska census of 1860, with mom Naomi and step-dad, John Martin LOOPE who she married November 24, 1853 - in Dodge Co Wisconsin.

In the 1870 Richardson Co Nebraska census Royal is found with his mom nearby, and a he has a son, Arthur BARLOW - born January 1870. I am looking for his fathers name and his mother's maiden name. I believe he has a sister: Ceralda / Sarilda C. BARLOW born 1837, possibly in New York and died 1892, possibly in Oklahoma.

Also from Mike Biken - August 1999

Looking for the parents of Sarilda/Ceralda C. BARLOW who married Alonzo Penuel BACON in Wisconsin or Nebraska about 1860. She was born in New York about 1835 and has a brother, Royal Herman BARLOW born about 1846 in Illinois. Both claim their parents birth as Vermont (I'd imagine about 1810 or so). I believe the mother was Naomi, but don't have her surname or the fathers name. They may have a sister named Prescilla, but I haven't anything concrete, just a reference.

Royal named a son Jirah, but I haven't been able to connect these two to the Jirah BARLOW out of Vermont, or any of his siblings.

Has anyone come across, Royal, Sarilda or Naomi? Any guesses?

Richard Barlow  July 1999

I am looking for a James Barlow who resided in the Peoria Illinois area from the 1950's to the late 1970's. He was married to a Caroline Fachiny of North Pekin Illinois.

They had twelve children: Gloria, Carolyn who married a Reynearson, William Earl, James, who was possibly a Jr., Glen, Dale, and others whom my mother cannot recall.

My father was William Earl. My parents divorced in 1960 and I lost all contact with the Barlow side of the family after my marriage in 1977.

My interest is purely for the sake of genealogy. I don't mean to pry where I may not be wanted. Hopefully there's a cousin who can help me out. Thanks for the help.

I am looking for information about Tabitha Ellen Barlow, born 26 December 1849, Pike Co Illinois, married 22 April 1868, Pike Co Illinois, to Darius William Ingalls, died 14 January 1938, Perry, Pike Co Illinois.

Tabitha's parents were Benjamin Franklin Barlow and Elizabeth Walker. They were both from Harrison Co Kentucky. Some of Tabitha's siblings were Mary Frances Barlow, Andrew Barlow and Matilda - "Mat".

Benjamin's parents were John and Nancy 'Beall' Barlow. Their children were Martin, Kiziah, Sam, Elizabeth, Joshua, Benjamin Franklin, James and Martha.

Any information on these families would be appreciated. Thanks ...

Our Barlow Family starts in Maryland with Zachariah Barlow abt 1760 then on to Ohio - Noble, Belmont and Guernsey Counties. After the Civil War, William C. Barlow moved to Jackson Co WV and finally on to Clark Co Illinois. Most of our information is on the Ohio folks and the move to WV and Illinois. We end with the death of William C. Barlow in 1916. The name we are always looking or on this family tree is the origin of the name Cogal. We don't think it comes from the Barlows but maybe from the Margaret Wells family - she married Zachariah Barlow in 1836 in Guernsey Co Ohio. Do you have the name Cogal in your research? We would be happy to share our research.

I found this some time ago on the internet and I didn't save the source. It appears to be summary from a DAR member. I have read that DAR membership at one time was not very strict and resulted in some incorrect linages. Today however, very strict standards of proof are required. If anyone has more about Thomas Barlow, below, I would be interested. Could he be the Thomas Barlow who I have seen connected to the Bond/Montgomery Co Illinois Barlow family. This Thomas was born in 1760 and died in 1825 in Shelby Co Tennessee.   He was married to Elizabeth Nicholas.

I am looking for Barlow ancestors in Ireland. I have the following obituary:

George L. Barlow was born 08 August 1840, at Croom, Limerick County, Ireland. In the autumn of 1848 when he was eight years of age, his father, mother, and family of six children set sail for America in an old sailing vessel and were six weeks crossing the ocean. The father, mother and two children, stricken with ship's fever, died and were buried at sea. The others landing at New Orleans, were taken to a hospital where the two brothers and three sisters died, leaving George all alone. He made his way back to the wharf he lived as best he could until two men from St. Louis discovered him, and turned him over to a man, Albert Howard from Green County, Illinois, who was glad to give him a home for several years.

On 04 March 1880 he was married -- second time -- to Mary E. Buckingham. To their union one son was born, George Russell, who lives near Ludlow. The funeral and burial were in Braymar, Caldwell Co, Missouri.

The obituary is a lot longer, going on with family lineage forward.

George L. Barlow is my Great-Great Grandfather, and George Russell Barlow is my step Great Uncle. I am looking for descendents of George Russell Barlow......Thank you for any leads you might give.

I have very little on the Barlow family, because the family was broken up into orphanges during WWII. However, my husband's name is William Nathan Barlow, Jr., b. in Reading, PA; his father is William Nathan Barlow; his father is Claude or Clyde Barlow. We believe the family was settled in around Binghamton, NY, and it was my husband's father who moved to Reading, PA to work for the railroad. He then moved to Fort Wayne with the railroad but later worked at Dana Corp. My hubby is the eldest of about 13 total kids. We are in touch with only a few of them, including his half brother William Raymond Barlow, who is a Wesleyan minister in Warren, Indiana. Hubby's mother was Stella Kahl. Her father was an immigrant from the Alsace-Lorraine area, and his family in the "Old Country" settled on the "Kahn" name when the area became stable politically. They had gone back and forth between the two depending on which country was in power. If any of that sounds familiar - go for it.

Looking for Absalom Callison who moved from Webster Co Missouri to Bunker Hill, Macoupin Co Illinois in the early 1860's, died in 1869, buried in the Potter's Field of the Bunker Hill Cemetery. His wife Priscilla "Selina" Simmons Callison was believed to have continued to live in Bunker Hill with their younger children.

The children were:

George W., James B., Moses, Martha, Caleb / married Jerusha M. BARLOW, William married Sophia Dever, and Salina B.

Some of these children were said to have moved to Montgomery and Bond Co's in Illinois. I would appreciate any response to this query. I will gladly share any material I have. Thank you for your help.

My granddad's name was Walter Clyde Barlow. He drifted into northeast Missouri about 1919. He was called Billy, he says because when he was little he was called "Little Billy" because tagged along after "Big Billy," so we assumed his father was William.

When my oldest sister was named Julia, he said that was his mother's name. He said he had people "around Peoria" Illinois.

His kids knew he had been in jail when they were little, after years of searching my mother got record from IOWA!!! where he spent 3 years in prison --long family story about how he was framed by his wife's father and brother to break up the marriage-- and that has some information he reported to them at the time --about 1928, I believe.

He was born January 1884, Sedalia, Missouri, his mother born in Indiana, died about 1920, father born Kentucky, died about 1900.

Someone sent me census information for family of Joshua and Julia Barlow, youngest child is Walter C., born 1887 Missouri, older son William, Joshua born Kentucky, died after 1900, Julia born Indiana, died 1928 -- however, granddad left the family about 1919 and had no further contact with them, so to him she may have "died" then. Joshua and Julia lived in Peoria area most of married life.

I strongly suspect these are my family. I've hunted a little bit and found some on the children, marriage, moves, etc., and Walter is never mentioned after 1900 census, as if he separated from the family, as my granddad did.

My dad and his sisters can't recall him ever mentioning any names of family members, but they were small when family broke up -- one aunt not even born yet, and later didn't have much to do with him as adults, except my dad took h im in for while before Walter died, but dad was working and Mom couldn't get much out of him, just what I mentioned.

He had dark complexion, and dark, kinky hair, and nose became more much more prominent with age, same for all the kids --we call it "that Barlow nose" as it's in our generation also. Thanks for any help.

I happened on to your page because I was researching a company in Joliet called Gerlach Barlow. My grandfather was VP of Marketing there in the 50's before it was sold to American Greeting Card in the 60's .
