North Carolina - Indiana - Iowa       Hobbs - Coffin - Horner - Barlow

Elizabeth Coffin      September 2000

I am researching the line of John (b. 1778) and Abigail HOBBS Coffin to John (b. 1824) and Martha Delphina Coffin to
Benjamin  (b. 1863) and Eliza HORNER Coffin.   This family moved from North Carolina to Indiana/ Iowa.  Most of my
sources have come from Quaker records.

In trying to locate the siblings of  Benjamin Franklin Coffin,  I discovered Louisa Jane Coffin (b. 1852) married Edward
  N. BARLOW (b. 1848) from a family history sheet.

Benjamin's  siblings  were  Abigail Sophrona, Cora M., John M., Louisa Jane, Matilda Caroline, Thomas Newton and
  Ellen.

Can anyone help to figure out what family Edward N. Barlow comes from?

Rush - Shelby and Harrison Co Indiana     Barlow - Parsons - Sliger - Inlow - Malcom

Tracy Barlow   February 2000

William Barlow married Elsie Parsons -no other info found-

  Children:

  Myrtle - married a Sliger
  Nellie - married an Inlow
  Clyde Barlow
  Jessie Lee Barlow
born May 7, 1887 Moscow, Rush Co Indiana - died January 1957  Shelbyville, Shelby Co Indiana
married Amy Althea Malcom  born February 21, 1888 and died November 26, 1962

Children:

          Carmen Barlow - living
          Rolland "Rick" Lawrence Barlow
born November 26, 1912  Homer, Rush Co Indiana - died August 1987  Shelbyville, Indiana
                 married Margaret Melton
born August 05, 1914 Corydon, Harrison Co Indiana died November 1997  Shelbyville Indiana

And  they  had 2 children,  one of whom was my father.   I have  tried  everything  I know and  can't  find  anything on
William or Elsie.   I can't get past Jessie Lee Barlow -  and  I am sure of the spelling of his name, like a girl, because
it is spelled that way on a  Certificate  of  Meritorious Civilian Service  he  rec'd during WWII, and on Rolland Barlow's
  Social Security application.

I am just getting started and am so frustrated!   Would appreciate any help.

I do not know the names of his parents or siblings but wish I did.
He shows up in the 1850 census as a  five year old boy, living  with my g3grandparents who were 70 years old at the
time.    Does anyone know more about this family?

Indiana - Platte Co Missouri       Barlow - Ballinger - McHenry

"Angie Anthony"  August 1999

Elizabeth  Barlow  was  born  in  Indiana  according  to  the  1870 Platte Co Missouri census.   She  married James
McHenry - also of Indiana - their oldest son James was born 02 December 1865 in Missouri.
There  were 4 other children, William, born 1869 in Missouri,  then Alice, Cleora and George.  Their  first son, James
was my ggrandfather.   He married an Elizabeth 'Betty' Ballinger, born 10 May 1869.

They had 3 children: John Tyson McHenry, born 25 September 1891; Clella Maude McHenry, born 12 April 1893 -my
grandmother;  and  Beatrice McHenry, born May 1896.   Betty died shortly after Beatrice was born on 30 May 1896-,
leaving James with 3 little ones.   He died  05 January 1897;  my aunt says  he died of a broken heart.  They died so
young which is why I assume why none of the family stories came down  to my mom or my aunts.  James's children
were  divided up  and 1 raised  by Cleora and  her husband,  Mr. Ballenger  and the  2 others by George and his wife.
Maybe they didn't want to  talk family history to the children because of  their tragic loss, I don't know.  I just  know I
am stumped by both Elizabeth Barlow and James McHenry!

Hendricks Co Indiana - Minnesota        Barlow - Meade

Jim Barlow   August 1999

Am  seeking information / descendants of William Elliott Barlow, a son of my great-grandfather James Milton Barlow
  of Hendricks Co Indiana.

William was born  13 February 1872, married  Ellen Meade in  Hendricks County in 1900.  They soon after moved to
the Minneapolis area, where they had a farm.   Had three children that I know  of; Milton, Lucille and Mary Jane.

I met some of  this family  at  a  reunion at  my  parents' house in the mid 1950s, when I was a pup.
Any descendants out there, or does anyone know of any?

Clark - Morgan and Hendricks Co Indiana     Short - Barlow

  "Vicky Harrison"

I am looking for the marriage license of  Russell Short to KATHERINE BARLOW married May 06, 1939  by Clarence
  E. Parsley, JP in Clark Co Indiana.

I have the original that they give you for keepsake but I am looking  for names of Russell Shorts parents and thought
they might be listed with the clerk records.  I still can't figure out why they married in Clark Co since they lived in the
  Morgan & Hendricks Co areas.

Does anyone know where I might get this info?

"Lori"

George W. Barlow; born August 17, 1819 in New York; died August 08, 1888 in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin.  His first
wife was  Lucinda  Purrington  born September 07, 1824  and  died November 08, 1849.  They were married June 03,
  1848.

They had one child named George H. Barlow;  born June 27, 1849.

I have nothing more on George H. Barlow.  I do know that he lived in Wisconsin though, and of course he was a half
  brother to Norman.

After Lucinda died George W. married Louisa  Rice, on May 09, 1856.   On the 1870 Wisconsin census for Crawford
County it shows a George Barlow - born in New York age 21 with Sarah age 15 -- born in Indiana.  I'm not sure if it is
  same George H.

My  George H.  Barlow  was  married to a  Susie  Simpson and  had a  daughter Laura E. Barlow, born in Wisconsin
but I am not sure if my family fits with the above family yet.

Halifax Co Virginia - Washington Co Kentucky - Bartholomew Co Indiana     Barlow - Hood - Simmons

"Nancy Burke"

I  am interested in a Sarah BARLOW  who married Thomas Simmons  probably  in  Halifax County Virginia  in 1825.
Thomas Simmons was the eldest son of  Benjamin and  Martha "Hood" Simmons.  Evidently Thomas received  73.5
acres from the US Government 21 March 1828.   He was  in  Bartholomew  Co Indiana, so I assume the land  was in
Bartholomew Co.  Don't know the reason for the  land grant.    Perhaps Thomas received it in lieu of his father,  Ben-
jamin, who may have fought in the War of 1812.  Benjamin died 20  September 1825 in Kentucky, probably Pleasant
Run, Hardin Community, Washington Co Kentucky.

I know nothing about Sarah before she married Thomas.  Sarah died 25 March 1846 in Bartholomew Co Indiana. She
and Thomas  travelled from Virginia through Kentucky - Washington Co-  where their first child,  Martha was born.  --
  Martha was Thomas's mothers' name.--

  2nd child, Priscilla

  3rd Mary Ellen

4th Benjaman Franklin --Thomas's fathers' name was Benjamin--

  5th Missouri / Melissa

  6th John Wesley

  7th Thomas --middle name Henry?--

I would appreciate any information about Sarah Barlow prior to her marriage to Thomas Simmons.    Thank you...

Note from Susan:  I find it interesting that a Nancy Barlow married Thomas Simmons on August 25, 1824 in Washington Co Kentucky.  Could Sarah and Nancy be the same person?

        Indiana     Barlow

Greg Reeves

I have no ancestors --that I know of-- with the BARLOW surname......

However,   I *would* like  very  much  to converse  with  anyone who  might have a  "Pvt. Jeremiah BARLOW, Co. A,
10th Indiana Cavalry 125th Volunteer Infantry" during the U.S. Civil War in their family.

  Here's why:
I suspect that Pvt. BARLOW served alongside my 2nd  Lt. Thomas B. REEVES, Co. C, 10th Indiana Cavalry, late in
the  U.S. Civil War.   Both  were  captured,  paroled,  and were on the  Sultana steamship when she exploded on the
Mississippi River on 27 April 1865.   Unfortunately,  both men were  killed in  the  disaster  that's  now dubbed,  "The
  Titanic of the Mississippi."

FYI, Indiana's 10th Cavalry was organized at Columbus, Vincennes, Terre Haute, New Albany and Indianapolis, Indi-
ana, between 30 December 1863 and 30 April 1864.  That means, basically that any "Jeremiah BARLOW" born bet-
ween 1825 and 1845 in the southern half of Indiana, USA  *may* be the man I'm hoping to learn more about...

I know from NARA records that my Tom, and two other 10th IN Cavalry officers were imprisoned at Andersonville and
I suspect that Pvt. Jeremiah BARLOW, Co. A, *may* have been as well...

Consequently, I'd like to hear from ANYONE who can answer any/all the following questions:

  1. When was "Pvt. Jeremiah BARLOW, Co. A, 10th IN Cavalry" captured?

  2. Where was "Pvt. Jeremiah BARLOW, Co. A, 10th IN Cavalry" captured?

  3. Where was "Pvt. Jeremiah BARLOW, Co. A, 10th IN Cavalry" imprisoned?

  4. Do any photos, letters, diaries, etc. remain from Jeremiah BARLOW's life?

My  bottom-line  is this:   I'm trying  simply to "re-create"  the details surrounding Tom's last 6 months of life and am
hoping to correspond  with descendants / relatives of  any / all  Tom's 10th Cavalry  comrades...

Thanks!   And thanks for you'all's  indulgence!

Missouri - Illinois - Iowa - Indiana - Kentucky         Barlow

  "Roberta"

     ...Walter Clyde Barlow...
with family ties to Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Kentucky

My granddad's name was Walter Clyde Barlow.  He drifted into northeast Missouri about 1919.  He was called Billy,
he says  because  when  he was little  he was  called  "Little Billy"  because  tagged  along after  "Big Billy,"  so we
  assumed his father was William.

When  my  oldest sister  was  named  Julia, he said that was his mother's name.   He said  he  had  people "around
  Peoria" Illinois.

His kids knew he had been in jail when they were little, after years of searching my mother got  record  from IOWA!!!
where he  spent 3  years  in prison (long family  story  about  how  he was framed  by his wife's  father and brother to
break up the marriage) and that has some information he reported to them at the time ---(about 1928, I believe)--

He was born January of 1884, in  Sedalia, Missouri, his mother was born in Indiana, and died about 1920, father was
born in Kentucky, and died about 1900.

Someone sent me census information for the family of Joshua & Julia Barlow, youngest child is Walter C. born 1887
Missouri, older son William, Joshua born Kentucky,  died after 1900,  Julia born Indiana, died 1928  (however, grand-
dad left the family about 1919 and  had no further contact with them,  so to him she may have "died" then) Joshua &
Julia lived in Peoria area most of married life.  I strongly suspect these are my family.

I've hunted a little bit and found some on the children, marriage, moves, etc, &  Walter is never mentioned after 1900
census, as if he separated from the family, as my granddad did.

My dad  and  his sisters  can't recall him ever mentioning any names of  family members, but they were small when
family broke up  (one aunt not even born yet), and  later didn't have much to do with  him  as adults,  except my dad
took  him in  for while  before Walter died,  but dad was working and  Mom couldn't  get much out of him, just what I
  mentioned.

He had dark complexion,  & dark,  kinky hair, and nose  became more much more  prominent with age, same for all
the  kids   (we call it "that Barlow nose" as it's in our generation also).    Thanks for any help.
