Joseph R. Barlow,  born September 01, 1833  at Newburyport, Massachusetts, son of  James R. & Emeline Barlow, shoemaker,  Newburyport Massachusetts enlisted
April  15,  1861  for 3  months,  age 27,  Private,  Co A  8th MA  Militia Infantry, organized at  Boston Massachusetts, with regiment from  Annapolis Maryland  to Washington  DC in  April 1861,  guard duty at Relay house on Baltimore & Ohio
Railroad,  mustered out August 01, 1861, re-enlisted  September 23, 1861,  age 28, Private, Co  I 23rd MA  Infantry, with   Burnside's  NC  expedition,  promoted  to Corporal  on  October 26, 1863,  promoted  to  Sergeant  on  October 19, 1864  at
Drury's Bluff, Cold  Harbor &  Petersburg Virginia in 1864 commissioned Second
Lieutenant  on  June 02, 1865,  mustered out as  Sergeant with  regiment June 25, 1865.
