Howard E. Durost, 79, of 1950 South U.S. Route 1, Vero Beach, Florida., formerly of 9 Tatman St., died yesterday in the home of his daughter here after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 52 years, Doris E. (Galusha) Durost; a son, Ronald E. Durost of Worcester; two daughters, Debra E. Morrissey of Newton and Sandra E. Gunderman of Worcester; four brothers, Carl E. and Roland Durost, both of Hooksett N.H., Harvey E. and  Albert G. Durost, both of Manchester, N.H.; a sister, Lillian Philibert of Manchester N.H.; seven grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Manchester, N.H., son of Winslow and Evelyn (Barlow) Durost, and lived here most of his life before moving to Florida in 1988.
Mr. Durost was a mason at Worcester State Hospital for 34 years, retiring in 1976. He then worked for several years at Holy Cross College. He also was a self-employed mason.
Mr. Durost was a member of the Retired State, County & Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Mercadante Funeral Home, 370 Plantation St. Burial will be in Eastwood Cemetery, Lancaster. Calling hours at the funeral home are 10 to 11 a.m. tomorrow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Massachusetts, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, 01608.

ATHOL
Frederick B. Litchfield, 80, of 567 Pleasant St. died Thursday night in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 45 years, Flora (Cucchi) Litchfield; three sons, John Litchfield of Las Vegas, Nev., James Litchfield of Atlanta and Mark Litchfield of Athol; three brothers, Charles Litchfield on Cape Cod, Victor and Robert Litchfield, both of Athol; a sister, Betty White of Orange; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; nephews and nieces.
He was born in Athol, son of Frank and Annie (Barlow) Litchfield, and lived here most of his life.
Mr. Litchfield was plant manager at the former Ansin Shoe Co. and the former J.H. McElwain Shoe Co., where he worked for 30 years. He retired in 1978.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe.
Mr. Litchfield was a member of Edward H. Phillips Post, American Legion; and Roy L. Boyce Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a life member of Athol-Orange Lodge of Elks and the Franco-American Club. He formerly played softball and hockey with the Lakeside Athletic Club.
Mr. Litchfield was a horse enthusiast for more than 60 years. He owned and trained harness horses for many years and drove harness horses in his youth.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. Members of Athol-Orange Lodge of Elks will meet there at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow to conduct a ritual. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 7 Oak St., Worcester, 01609; or another charity.

AUBURN
Rudolph N. "Rudy" Swanstrom, 83, of 14 Pakachoag St., formerly of South Street, died Saturday in Sandalwood Convalescent Home, Oxford, after an illness. He leaves his wife, Claire E. (Barlow) Norton Swanstrom; three stepdaughters, Joan C. Dewsbury of Burlington, Melba A. LaPlante of Worcester and Linda J. Brennan of Auburn; a  brother, Edward Swanstrom of California; a sister, Irene E. Brown of Auburn; nine stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was born in Worcester, son of John E. and Annie (Steele) Swanstrom, and lived in Auburn most of his life.
He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School.
Mr. Swanstrom was employed for 20 years as a truck driver for the Texaco Oil Co. based in Providence, before retiring in 1966.
He was a member of Singletary Rod & Gun Club, Engelbecht Club in Shrewsbury and 200 Sportsmen's Club in Webster.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 10 to 11 a.m. Friday. Memorial donations may be made to the Auburn District Nursing Association, 41 South St., Auburn, 01501.

Daniel M. Gravel, 83, of 14 Depot St., Wilkinsonville, died yesterday in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after a long illness.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, Olivette L. (Barlow) Gravel; four sons, Daniel H. Gravel of Fitchburg, Edmund A. Gravel of Worcester, Robert T. Gravel of Sutton and Gary P. Gravel in Florida; four daughters, Therese Pierce of South Dennis, Olivette Marshall and Joan Savage, both of Grafton, and Brenda Bobrowski in Florida; two brothers, Edward Gravel in Florida and Arthur Gravel of Sturbridge; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces and
nephews.
He was born in Worcester, son of Joseph and Frazilda (Longton) Gravel, and lived here most of his life.
Mr. Gravel was a self-employed steam fitter for many years, retiring in 1973. He also worked at J.J. Bafaro & Sons in Worcester for several years. He was a member of St. Mark's Church.
Funeral services will be private. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 7 Oak St., Worcester 01609, or the Millbury District Nursing Society Hospice Program, 123 Elm St., Millbury 01527. Robert C. Roney Funeral Home Inc., 152 Worcester St., is directing arrangements.

WESTFORD, Connecticut
Clyde W. Hazen, 77, of Boston Hollow Road, formerly of West Brookfield, Mass., died yesterday in Windham Community Memorial Hospital, Willimantic, after a long illness.
He leaves his wife, Dorothy (Barlow) Hazen; a stepson, Donald Burr of Willimantic; a stepdaughter, Sandra Congdon of Dudley, Mass.; a brother, Walter Hazen of West Brookfield;  three sisters, Rosamond Smith of Los Angeles, Edith Rayner of Worcester, Mass., and Carolyn Allen of Great Barrington, Mass. three step-grandchildren; 13 foster children; nephews and nieces. Over the years, he and his wife were parents to 13 foster children.
He was born in West Brookfield, son of George and Florence (Benson) Hazen, and lived here 41 years.
He graduated from Warren High School and graduated, with honors, from Becker Junior College, now Becker College, in Worcester.
Mr. Hazen worked at Pratt & Whitney Division of United Technologies Corp. in East Hartford for 27 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in United Baptist Church of Ashford, U.S. Route 44, Warrenville. Burial will be in Westford Village Cemetery. Calling hours at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Willimantic, are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.
