"Jesse Barlow was a tall, very erect man, with dark hair and eyes. He enlisted in the War of 1812, and was promoted through the varying grades until in 1814, when he was made First Lieutenant in the 46th Regiment of Infantry. His commission was signed by President Madison and Secretary of War James Monroe. His term of service was passed on Staten Island. Later he became a Captain." [HA]
