Donald Thompson at Find-a-Grave: 18th Massachusetts Infantry, Co. E A 20 year-old Fisherman from Mattapoisett, MA, Barlow enlisted on August 15, 1862 and was mustered into service that same day. He was engaged with the Regiment in 1862 at the battle of Fredericksburg and in 1863 at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Rappahannock Station. He was taken prisoner at the battle of the Wilderness on May 04, 1864. Barlow died at Andersonville on September 05, 1864 due to Scurvy. FREDERICK STEPHEN BARLOW Entered the U.S. Navy as Third Assistant Engineer on June 22, 1860, served first on the "Anacesta" in the Chesapeake, next on board the U.S.S. Sumpter on the west coast of Africa until her return to the U.S., next on the steamer "Kanawha" under Farragut, promoted to Second Assistant Engineer on July 30, 1862, assigned to the steam gun boat "Owasco" the following year as Senior Engineer. When it was decided to attempt the capture of Mobile Alabama and its defences, an officer of experience being required as Senior Engineer, he volunteered to go on board the monitor "Tecumseh." His services, after being twice declined, were accepted because of the illness of the Senior Engineer of the "Tecumseh," and he went down with that vessel, at his post, when she was sunk by a torpedo during the Naval Battle of Mobile Bay on August 05, 1864. All on board were lost except the pilots and eight or ten men.
