states in his letter:
It
seems that there were some 5 or 6 Grantham brothers who came to Mississippi
from N.C. in the early part of the 1800's. One was Richard ('Luck'
or 'Dick') Grantham b. 10-5-1811, one was Daniel b. 8-18-1810. Of
the other, we think one was John, one William and the other two not known.
Of the 2 not named, we think that they did not settle in Miss., but moved
to perhaps Louisana or Arkansas or Texas. We are only certain of
the first two named, Richard & Daniel. Richard was my great-grandfather.
Now, from family accounts, I was told all along the way that
Richard
was born in 1798, yet I only recently found that a Bible entry in a family
Bible owned by his daughter Elizabeth gives his birth as 10-6-1811.
Now, again, all along the way I have been told by family accounts that
Richard's wife was Jane Barlow. I had no dates or anything to substantiate
this. Two or three items-census records, etc=did show that Richard's
wife was named Lydia or Lidy. When seeking dates, therefore, I would
say that Richard's wife was Jane Lydia Barlow. Recently I discovered
the names of 2 of the daughters of Elizabeth Grantham, who was a dau. of
Richard. In fact, one of thsese two owns the Bible which gives Richard's
birth date. This same Bible gives Richard's wife as "Lidy" and gives
her birth date as 9-22-1815. Yet, here again, the family accounts
all say that Richard's wife was Jane Barlow. So I still don't know
whether her name was Jane Barlow or Lydia Jane Barlow or Jane Lydia Barlow-or-whether
or not he may have had two wives. Nothing I have found anywhere would
indicate 2 wives, however.
Now I'll give you the few bits and briefs that I have-Barlow-wise. My Richard and Jane (Lydia) had the following children:
