Barlows in Marshall, Tunica, Desoto, Tate, Panola, Lafayette, Benton, Union, Tippah & Pontotoc Counties of Mississippi

Hopefully some of this compiled information might help those of  you researching the Barlows in Marshall Co Mississippi and the surrounding areas.    A  map of counties and meredians  is available here, but not of  the townships.

Marshall Co Mississippi is found about midway in the uppermost northern part of Mississippi, on the border of Tenne- ssee, and not too far east of Arkansas.  Surrounded by the counties listed above, and by Shelby and Hardeman Co's in Tennessee.

Note that I am not saying that Barlows living in other counties are not also related or even the same families in counties other than these, but I had to draw a line somewhere in order to separate the information into usable databases.

Can anyone identify the family of John William Barlow  of Pontotoc Mississippi?

To date, I have not found land records for any of the listed counties in Mississippi to indicate land having been aquired by Barlows.  If any are known, I would appreciate information to share with other researchers in the Clearinghouse.
I have not done a search of Tennessee land records.

I do not have at my discretion, a list of the whereabouts of the various military units created during the Civil War, but have abstracted Barlows known to have served in:

Confederate branches in Mississippi during the Civil War

A complete compilation of military records,  alphabetized by first name is also available.

Pomena J. Barlow, who is known to have been in Marshall Co Mississippi is shown in military records to have enlisted in the 34th Mississippi Infantry C.S.A., Tallahatchie Co Mississippi on March 04, 1862.

Note:  I have seen this name spelled many ways:
Pernario J. Barlow - Purmanio J. Barlow - Pomeno J. Barlow& possibly Permenious is meant to be the same.

Note that this record is from Tallahatchie Co. which I do not have as one of the counties in this database, but seeing that Pomeno is listed as being discharged in Tallahatchie Co, --two counties southwest of Marshall Co, and nearer the Arkan- sas border-- I thought that there might be a possible relationship between he and the following:

Ravell Barlow is also shown to have been discharged at Tallahatchie Co, though I have no further information for him.

I believe the following record would pertain to the Alexander & Martha Barlow shown in:

1880 census of Tate Co Mississippi

and probably also that of  Alex in:

1870 Lafayette Co Mississippi census

Alexander Barlow, Private, Co H 22nd MS Infantry, promoted to Corporal, served 1861-65, wounded.

Pension application no. 3814 filed August 06, 1902 as resident of Craighead County Arkansas, died November 22, 1902.

Widow Martha Ann Barlow's pension application no. 3814 filed August 8, 1903 in Arkansas.

Alexander and Martha are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Greene Co Arkansas:

                           Barlow, Alexander   b. 1844 - d. 1903
                           Barlow, Martha        b. 1854 - d. 1929

Elisha Barlow --also shown on record as Eliza--  Co D 17th MS Infantry surrendered April 26, 1865 in North Carolina  --may or may not be the same, but worth a look--

A look at the Barlow's  in the 1870 Tippah Co census might also be in order.

I have not found the name Barlow in these areas of Mississippi prior the 1850 census.
Also, I do not currently have transcriptions for the 1860 and 1870 census records, just the indexed head of household.  If  anyone has those records, I would be most grateful for a copy, either transcribed, or a photocopy of the actual record.

The following are names extracted from census index and records for the years 1850 - 1880 for Barlows living in the upper one quarter of Mississippi.

1850  MARSHALL COUNTY / Southern  page 268
JAMES B. BARLOW  age 55  Farmer  160 acres   from North Carolina
Sarah Barlow   age 38  from North Carolina

Alexander Barlow age 12 from North Carolina
Elisha A. Barlow age 10 male from Texas
Robert M. Barlow age 9 male from Mississippi
James E.M. Barlow age 6 from Mississippi

JOHN H. BARLOW age30   farmer  born in North Carolina

ANN BARLOW - 23 years old, farmer from North Carolina

Elisha A. Barlow - 18 years old from Texas
Baldy M. Barlow - 16 years old from Mississippi
James M. Barlow - 14 years old from Mississippi
William Barlow - 4 years old from Mississippi

My guess is that this is the same family as that of  James H. Barlow shown in the 1850 census.  My assumption would
be that James has died, and Sarah would be the mother of them all, but why is Ann listed as the head of household ...and is she really a farmer... or perhaps this was an error on part of the census taker.

Family tree of   J.K. Hanson who lives in Southaven Mississippi writes of the Barlows:
They are originally from Soldier's Grove, Wisconsin.  That is the only information that I have. I think that this is a fairly common  name, because I know some unrelated Barlow's that go to Trinity Baptist Church in Southaven Mississippi where I live.
Note:  this information has not been verified by myself, but Lloyd Barlow, shown in the query below, does not believe
this Barlow family arrived from Wisconsin.   I myself am doubtful.

Ouineola Carpenter    Irving, Texas    February 2000
My mother was a Barlow & the granddaughter of James M. Barlow who is buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, Marshall Co Mississippi.

I have the list of his brothers who were in the Confederate Army.

His father and mother are James B. and  Sara Biggs Barlow

Sara is buried in Tate Co Mississippi and we have no idea what happened to him.
We would love to find about him.

Deborah Poe Fondren  January 2000

BARLOW  - POE -  ALDERSON -  ADAY  families

Elisha Barlow married Martha Alderson, 30 August 1866, in Marshall Co, Mississippi.
All of my "Poe" family migrated eventually to Marshall County and married into the families in the early 1800's.
I find more on all the other families usually and not much on my own, "Poe".

The Barlows in reference were living next door to William and Betsy Poe in 1850.  Like the Poe's, they came from North Carolina; I would be willing to bet that Betsy was a Barlow.  I just don't know how to prove it.

See the  Marshall County, Mississippi census of 1850

My major milestone will be linking William Poe to the Poe's in Chatham Co North Carolina.
The Barlows lived between two Poe's, two Williams to be exact.  Both are my descendents.

William Poe  age 59  Farmer owned 2500 acres and was from North Carolina
Betsy Poe age 52 also from NC -Chatham Co NC-  born January 06, 1800
died and is buried in Marshall Co, October 04, 1857,  killed in a tornado
This inscription was on her headstone.  She is buried in Bethlehem Cemetery
William Poe is a mystery

There children were:

William Green Poe - W.G. Poe born c1817-  my great great grandpa
Blakely Poe  - J.J.B. Poe  born in NC born c1820
Duncan Poe born 8 years later! in Texas born c1828
Martha A. Poe born 4 years later!!! in Texas born c1832.  She married James Greer.
George Poe born in Texas c1833
Joseph Poe born in Texas c1836
Uraney Poe born in Mississippi c1838
Lafayette Poe born in Mississippi 4 years later! c1842
Alexander Poe born in Mississippi c1844
Silas Jones also on the 1850 census in the household -not a laborer-
He was born in Texas c1828

On the census of 1850 William Green Poe had married Minerva Poe and moved next door to the Barlows.  His head-
stone was in Bethlehem Cemetery, Marshall Co Mississippi also, but has been destroyed since then.
My Aunt Cecil Poe Simmons, about 85 years old now told me he was a Mason and had a Masons -Woodsmans-head- stone.   She said she doesn't know what happened to it.   W.G. Poe's children from the 1850 census are:

H. E. Poe -Hasten- born c1844 in Mississippi
He married Mary A. Ray, January 28, 1883
Mary A. Poe born c1846 in Mississippi.
She married William J. McElroy or Macelroy - not sure of the spelling on May 24, 1866
Green Berry Poe born c1848 in Mississippi

Minerva, William Green Poe's wife died after the birth or during the birth of her last child.
We don't really know.  William Green Poe and Minerva had more children.

They are:

Sarah Elizabeth Poe born in Mississippi 1851
Sarah died April 2, 1877 in Lafayette Co Mississippi
She married Tobias H. Lee Wright in Lafayette Co Mississippi, November 14, 1872
Zollie Coffer Poe - Z.C. Poe  born in Mississippi c1856.
He married Lola Swinney -native American- in Prentiss Co Mississippi, March 7, 1876.
I think she was Chickasaw.
America Poe born in Mississippi c1856
Robert G. Poe born in Mississippi c1858
Mahaley Poe born in Mississippi c1859

After Minerva died, William Green Poe remarried Elizabeth Sturdivant / Studivant.

Their children are:

Martha Poe born in Mississippi c1861
Minerva Poe born in Mississippi January 17, 1862
Minerva died February 8, 1925.
She married W.H. Redding born July 28, 1880 in Marshall Co Mississippi
William Poe born in Mississippi c1863
Jessie Poe born in Mississippi c1866 - female
Howard Faulkner Poe born April 6, 1870 - my great grandpa
Callie Poe born in Mississippi c1875
Jimmie Poe born in Mississippi
She married Balem Harris and had two children named Fady and Fern Harris

Howard Faulkner Poe married Jimmie Watius Porter in Mississippi, December 27, 1893
Jimmie was born in Marshall Co Mississippi March 07, 1877.
She was the daughter of James Robert Porter and Margaret Ann Burris.  She died June 18, 1961
Howard Faulkner Poe died May 1, 1945 in Mississippi.
Howard and Jimmie are both buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, Marshall Co Mississippi.
Their children are:      --all born in Marshall Co Mississippi--
Margaret Audry Poe born October 8, 1895
Wallace Porter Poe born November 1897
Olive Lorraine Poe born 1900 died 1911
Howard Montgomery Poe, born December 30, 1901- died December 30, 1978.  My grandpa.

Raymond Victor Poe born September 13, 1905 and died September 10, 1977.
He married Jamie Spartman.

Mable Ernest Poe born 1909 and died 1911.
Cecile Ione Poe born April 29, 1916.  She married Charles Herbert Simmons.
Howard Montgomery Poe married Mamie Reola Ash in Waterford Mississippi

Land and Property Records for Marshall County, Mississippi shows a deed transaction referencing William Green Poe as the land owner.  Joseph H. Poe and others dated 11th day November 1872.  80 acres of land.  I couldn't read the upper half of the document.  I really don't know what was actually going on here, but it seems reasonably safe to assume that all these people I am about to list for you were involved in this deed transaction.
The others listed were including Joseph H. Poe are:

J.J.B. Poe    -  he married Margaret Aday
A.P. Poe "Alexander P. Poe" -  I don't know which of these others is his family yet
G. B. Poe "Green Berry Poe"  Ditto
J.L. Aday and Mary Aday
E.A. Barlow - male
Martha "Alderson" Barlow
J.W. White ?
Eliza White ?
Martha Poe Greer
James Greer
Martha Greer - child I presume
B. Alderson
J. Alderson
George W. Alderson
B.F. Alderson
W.G. Alderson
Jerry Alderson

These were the names on this document.

Previous records show:

John Aday married Mary Alderson
Lucinda "Cindy" Aday married B. Alderson - Benjamin
Margaret Aday married J.J.B. Poe
Elisha Barlow married Martha Alderson

Just which one of  my ancestors married into the Alderson family is still a mystery as well as the Barlow mystery.
These families were all tied in from William Green Poe's first family, unless of course, he had another family previous
to this that I am not aware of.     Is there also a relationship here?

Jan Ayers

My husband is the grandson of  Florence Louise PAISLEY, who was a daughter of  JOHN BARLOW PAISLEY
J.B. PAISLEY was the biological son of  John H. BARLOW

His paternal uncle, HUGH SAMUEL PAISLEY, adopted him.
H.S. was born a BARLOW but his  surname was changed to PAISLEY

John H. BARLOW and his wife, Caroline Mathilda GILL moved to Pontotoc, Mississippi where he was a teacher.   They both died during  the Civil War.

Hugh Samuel PAISLEY was a pioneer dentist in Mississippi and then Alabama.  He also served as U.S. Consul in
Pisa, Italy.

Martin's 1st Alabama Volunteers,  --Mexican War--
Served 6 months in 1846
Pension application 18964 filed March 30, 1888, resident Florida

I am really curious if   Samuel Paisley Barlow  might be related to this family...

John H. Barlow, born 1820 in North Carolina  [C1850], farmer in Pontotoc Co Mississippi [C1850]
married Matilda ----, she born 1824 in North Carolina  [C1850]

If  anyone should have the full record, I would be most grateful for the information.

Linda Williamson

I am just beginning to investigate my family history and came across your comments related to the Barlow and Paisley connection.

I've only been researching a matter of weeks!!!

My great grandmother was Martha Eliza Barlow.  Another reference to her and some unverified information about her can be found in generation 8 of Descendants of  Thomas Coats, in FamilyTreeMaker on Genealogy.com.  The owner of
the site is Brad Coats of Pontotoc Co Mississippi.

Martha  Eliza  married  George  Franklin  Powell.     They were the parents of my grandmother, Lanie Bell Powell.
In the Thomas Coats site, her name is spelled "Laney" but that is not correct.  She married my grandfather, John Eston Waldrop.     My mother, Mabel Ruth Waldrop married my father Belton Eugene Berry.  I am Linda Ruth Berry 'William- son'  shown in generation 10 of  the Thomas Coats descendants.  I was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi and grew up in Mississippi but now live in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

With  that history,  I've talked to my mother recently about my genealogy research and she has said  "there is  a Paisley connection in our family."     That probably doesn't help you very much, but I will try to find out more from my mother about her knowledge of this relationship.

Both Martha Eliza and George Franklin died when my grandmother was  young so there wasn't a lot of oral family history there.

This information probably doesn't help you a lot, but your comments were pieces of my puzzle.

More to date, I have come across a  Barlow family in Pontotoc Co,  but have no clue of any relationships to any of those listed in this page.   Can anyone claim this Pontotoc Barlow family as theirs?

Note from  Susan

I would appreciate very much that anyone researching these families, or other Barlow families known to have ties to
the upper one quarter of Mississippi, contact the me with information that might be helpful to others researching these areas.  Family lineage, records of any sort would gladly accepted in any format you care to send.

Of course, all lineages and records from any area in the world pertaining to any known variation of the surname Barlow is always welcome.

I, myself  am interested in the Barlows known to have been in the Simpson, Copiah, Perry, Lincoln, Rankin, Hinds, and Forrest Co or surrounding areas of Mississippi.  Many of these families went into Lousiana and Texas before spreading worldwide.  Moreover, I would love to know of these families prior to arriving in Mississippi, but I have found very few clues or records of these events.   Thank you so very much.
