NAVY MAN DROWNS

P.O. Floyd Barlow, 28, Loses Life Sept. 2 at Iwo Jima, Wife Here Learns

Petty Office, I-c Floyd Raymond Barlow, W.T. of the U.S. Navy, was drowned Sept. 2 at Iowa Jima, a message this morning from the Navy department informed his wife, Ruth, who is at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Eveleigh, 1112 West Twelfth. No details of the tragedy were given.

Young Barlow, who was 28 on the 28th of last month, was the holder of selective service number 158, the first in Montgomery county to be drawn by the late President Roosevelt when the first drawing of draft board registrants over the entire nation was made. He entered service in 1942 and landed at at Pearl Harbor in October 1943. The last letter his wife received from him was written on Aug. 9.

Survivors besides his wife are his father, R.H. Barlow of Liberty, and a sister and two brothers.

Catholic Rites Conducted for J. M.Barlow

Funeral services were held Saturday for J. M. Barlow, 74, a retired city employee. Mr. Barlow passed away Thursday.

Services were conducted at St. John's Catholic Church at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Eugene Senecal. Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Chas. Lough, Harry Myrtle, Louis Schump, Paul Schump, Joe Schump Sr., and M.H. Beausoleil. Recitation of the Rosary was held at the Puryear Chapel at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Barlow was born at Belvidere, Nebr., August 15, 1884.

He was married to Laura Schump at the St. John's Catholic Parish house here (Herington) on Feb. 16, 1916.

He is survived by his wife, Laura: two sons, Raymond of Rifle, Colo., and Bill, Lincolnville, Kans.: a brother, Paul, Denver, Colo., and three sisters, Mrs. Lloyd Walker, Agalla, Nebr., Mrs. Roy Morris, St. Joseph, Mo., and Mrs. Ben Hamilton, Burns, Kans.

Gertrude Irene Barlow      Olathe Kansas

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Newcomer-Diffenderlee Funeral Home for Mrs. Gertrude Irene Barlow, 89, formerly of 1345 Indian Trail. She died Tuesday at an Olathe nursing home.

She was born Dec. 2, 1890, in Washington County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Demetz. She lived most of her life at Topeka.

Mrs. Barlow was a member of Friends Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Nona C. Dean, Mesa, Ariz.; a son, C. Gaylord Barlow, Port Isabel, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Alice Fitzsimmons, League City; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Florence Imogene Luther, 59, Grandview, died January 15, 1991, at St. Luke's Hospital.

She was born in Hiawatha, Kansas, and lived in this area most of her life. Mrs. Luther was a bookkeeper at the Taps Lounge in Kansas City for seven years.

Survivors include four daughters, Jean Jackman and Lucinda Soria of Grandview, Marsha Mountjoy, Blue Springs, and Connie Luther, Kansas City; a brother, Alfred Barlow, Lawrence; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Benjamin Wesley Barlow, 72, south Kansas City, died March 20, 1991, at the home.

He was born in Paris, Ark., and lived in Kansas City most of his life. Mr. Barlow worked for the Kansas City Terminal Railway, retiring in 1983. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mamie E. Barlow of the home; three sons, Jerry Barlow, North Kansas City, Eddie Barlow, Hamilton, Mo., and Dennis Barlow, Belton; a daughter, Judy Barlow, Belton; a stepson, Steve Mosby, Kansas City; two stepdaughters, Ann Trussel, Grandview, and Sandra Gaines, Kansas City; a brother, Curtis Barlow, and a sister, Verna Ruth Walker, both of Paris; nine grandchildren; seven step- grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Marshall A. Barlow, 70, California, Mo., died July 6, 1991,ata hospital in Jefferson City.  He was born in Jameson, Mo., and lived in Kansas City 35 years before moving to California in 1976.

Mr. Barlow was a driver for the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority for 33 years until he retired in 1977.  He was a member of Local 1287 of the Amalgamated Transit Union.  He was a member of the Leeds Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Barlow of the home three sons, Tom R. Barlow and Floyd Barlow of California, and Clarence Ray Mathews Barlow, Independence; three daughters, Pamela J. Caswell, Kansas City, and Dorothy Stewart and Marsha F. Barlow of California; brother, Walter Dean Barlow, Kansas City; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 pm Tuesday at the Bowlin-Cantriel Chapel, California; burial in the California City Cemetery.  Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel.

June Irwin Barlow, 75, Napa, Calif., formerly of this area, died Jan. 29, 1992, at a hospital in Napa.

Mrs. Barlow was born in Kansas City and moved to California in 1942.

Mrs. Barlow was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and lived in Kansas City before moving to La Habra in 1962.

Mrs. Barlow was born in Lamar and lived in Albuquerque, N.M., for 27 years before moving to Liberty in 1991.  She was a secretary in Albuquerque for 27 years.

Mrs. Barlow was a lifelong area resident.  She formerly was a medical assistant at Glennon Place.   She was a member of the Guinotte Manor Tenants Association.  She graduated from the Kansas City College of Medical and Dental Assistants in 1985.  She was a Presbyterian.

In Memory

Services for Martin M. Barlow were held Monday, March 7, 1994 in the Colonial Chapel of Lebanon, Mo., with Rev. Bill Elam officiating.  Burial was in the Lebanon Cemetery, under the direction of the Colonial Funeral Chapel of Lebanon.

Music was by Rusty Shadel, soloist and Marcia Shadel, organist.

Escorts were Murel Amos, Ryszard Gottifried, Jesse Elam, Mark Fingers, Denny Lambeth and Don Clark.

Martin M. Barlow, son of Tennis and Rosie King Barlow, was born in Pulaski County on January 18, 1898, and departed this life March 4, 1994 in Richland, Mo., at the age of ninety-six years.

He was united in marriage with Grace Watson in June of 1920, and to this union five children were born.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; one son, Jim Barlow; and one daughter, Sandra Barlow.

Martin owned and operated a dairy farm in the Pulaski County area for many years.  He also managed the dairy farm at the Baptist Home in Ironton, Mo. for a number of years.  He has been a lifetime member of the Berean Baptist Church.

Thoses urviving include his three sons, Martin J. Barlow of Richland, Donald Barlow of Peoria, Illinois and Tommy Barlow; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Martin is also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Virgil, Herbert, Arthur and Harrison; two sisters, Ida and Edna Barlow; two infant brothers; and a half brother, George.

Martin attended Chillicothe Normal College in the early 1900's.  He enjoyed playing the flute and was even able to play in the last few months of his life.

Josephine Ewing, 93, Edwardsville, KS, died Wednesday, July 12, 1995, following a stroke at the Sharon Lane Nursing Home in Shawnee, KS, where she lived since May 1991.  Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, at Floral Hills Cemetery, Raytown, Mo.

Josephine Casey was born May 23, 1902, in Iberia, Mo, the daughter of John Simeon Casey, an Iberia merchant, who was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives in 1905, and his wife, Martha Barlow Casey.  In 1918, afte rretirement, the family moved to Kansas City, Mo, where the residence was 3834 Forest.  Josephine graduated from Westport High Schoo land Kansas City Business College.  After graduation she worked for several years in the business office of Peck's Department Store in downtown Kansas City.  In 1926 she married Joseph Ellsworth Drew.  Later, she went to work for her brother-in-law, Phillip S. Judy, owner of the Air Made Well Company, of Edwardsville, KS, continuing there until her retirement.   Sh emarried Thomas J. Ewing in 1945 and they resided in Edwardsville, KS. She continued to live there with her son, John, after Ewing's death, until her move to the nursing home.  She was a member of the Edwardsville Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Drew Ray, Mission Hills, KS; a son, John P. Drew, Edwardsville, KS; three grandchildren, Dick Ray (Master Plumber), Louisburg, KS, Judy Ray-Sherry, Allentown, PA, Elise Ray, Fairway, KS; and three great-grandchildren, all of Allentown, PA.

Joseph Earl Barlow, Sr., 78, Pleasant Valley, MO, passed away Friday, December 1, 1995, at Liberty Nursing Center.  Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, December 4, at McGilley Antioch Chapel; burial in Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery.  Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

Mr. Barlow was a pipefitter for the Gas Service Company for 31 years, retiring in 1982.  He was a member of the Pipefitters Union Local 781.  He was an Army veteran of WWII and a member of the V.F.W.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jack Barlow; an infant daughter, Naomi Barlow; a sister, Mary Saddler; brothers, Herband Gene Barlow; and a grandson, Eric Barlow.  Survivors include his wife, Naomi Barlow, of the home; two sons, Joe Barlow, Jr., Broken Arrow, Ok, and Tom Barlow, Pleasant Valley; three brothers, Bob Barlow and Tom Barlow, both of Hale, Mo, and John Barlow, Pleasant Valley; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Carol E. Yohn, 92, Sunrise Beach, Mo, passed away Thursday, December 21, 1995, at the Laurie Nursing Home, Laurie, Mo.  Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 23, at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Laurie, Mo; burial in Ozark Chapel Cemetery, Laurie.  The family will receive friends from 12 noon-1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Yohn was born February 11, 1903, in Bramer, Mo, the daughter of Edward and Alice Barlow Leslie. She was married to Fred P. Yohn, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Yohn worked for the I.R.S. in Kansas City, before retiring and moving to the Lake of the Ozarks.

She was a member of the Ozark Chapel United Methodist Church, Laurie.  She is survived by two sons, Coburn D. Yohn, Bossier, City, LA, and Leslie Fred Yohn, Las Vegas, NV; three daughters, June Callahan, Leawood, KS, Corinne Stephenson, Independence, Mo, and Lynn McGavern, Lee'sSummit, Mo; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Warren E. Barlow, 84, Olathe, KS, died Wednesday, March 13, 1996, at his home.

Funeral services will be 2p.m. Friday, March 15, at W.L. Mr. Barlow was born April 18, 1911, in Warrensburg, Missouri.  He was a busdriver for 30 years for Continental Trailways, and retired in 1976, having received an award for driving two million miles with no accidents.  He was a member of Masonic Lodge 366, Bonner Springs, Kansas, and the Order of Eastern Star 302, Bonner Springs Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Coletha M. Barlow, on October 13, 1994. He is survived by two sons, Thomas E. Barlow, Benbrook,TX, and Warren E. "Woody'' Barlow, II, Platte Woods, Mo; one daughter, JoAnn McKee, Olathe, KS; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Grace Lillie Barlow, 90, Independence Mo, passed away March 20, 1996, at St. Mary's Manor of Blue Springs.   Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, at the D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel; burial in Floral Hills Cemetery.    Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, at the chapel.

Mrs. Barlow was born in Lee's Summit, Mo, and was a lifelong area resident.  She worked at Pratt-Whitney during WWII,and later became an assistant buyer for Macy's. She was a Methodist.

Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Oswald Barlow, of the home; four sons, James O. Barlow, Kingsville, Mo, Robert W. Barlow, Blue Springs, Mo, Frank D. Barlow, Raytown, Mo, and Richard M. Barlow, Oak Grove, Mo; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and sixgreatgreat-grandchildren.

Mr. Stephenson was born August 25, 1932, in DeWitt, Mo, the son of Joe and Mary (Callaway) Stephenson. He lived all of his life in the DeWitt area.  He attended rural Crispin School and graduated from Carrollton High School.  John was a member of the First Christian Church, Carrollton,Mo ;the Moberly Moose Lodge; loved collecting antique tractors; and was an avid hunter.  He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was stationed in France.

He married Joyce Ann Barlow on July 4, 1964, in Carrollton, Mo; she preceded him in death August 6, 1989.  OnNovember 21, 1990, he married Evelyn Downing in Brunswick, Mo.  He was also preceded in death by his parents.  He is survivedby his wife, Evie, of the home; son, Lynn and wife, Karla Stephenson, O'Fallon, MO; daughter, Lisa and husband, Steve Hendrick, Springfield, Mo; stepdaughter, Janet and husband, Tom Grow, Overland Park, KS ; sister, Shirley Scott, Carrollton, Mo; five grandchildren, Erika Haley, Matthew and Shelby Hendrick, all of Springfield, Mo, Jonothon Stephenson, O'Fallon, Mo, and Stephen Grow, Overland Park, KS; several nieces and nephews.

Barlow, Dallas,Tx; mother and stepfather, Donna and Vern Sheets, Independence, Mo; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Vicki and Chuck Miller, Independence, Mo, and Kristi and Clint Littleton, Sugar Creek, Mo; two step brothers, Mark Sheets and Mike Sheets, and one stepsister, Lisa Stewart, al lof Independence, Mo; maternal grandfather, Raymond A. Fleeman,
and maternal grandmother, Thelma M. Haralson, both of Independence, Mo; paternal grandmother, Irene C. Barlow, and maternal great-grandmother, Eva A. Bush, Independence, Mo; uncle, William L. Haralson, Richardson, Tx; two aunts, Gloria J. Smith and Gayle A. Watson, and uncle, Albert Fleeman, all of Independence, Mo; seven cousins; and five nieces and nephews.

Susan Mary Foresman Barlow, 56, Aspen, Co, (formerly of Kansas City) passed away Sunday, June 9, 1996, in Aspen.  Private services will be held.

Mrs. Barlow graduated from Sunset Hill School and Scripps College.  She attended the University of Florence, Italy and the Kansas City Art Institute.  She was a member of the Kansas City Junior League of Missouri, Children's Relief Association at Children's Mercy Hospital, Grace & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and Kansas City Country Club.

Survivors include her sons, John McClintock Barlow and Max Milton Barlow; daughter, Alden Foster Barlow; sister, Sarah Foresman Ingram-Eiser; niece Alexandra Foresman Ingram-Eiser; and nephew, Adam Stover Ingram-Eiser.

Mary was born March 16, 1904, in Marysville, KS, to James and Alice Barlow.  She had one sister, Irene, and two brothers, Lillis and Norbert, who all preceded her in death.  Mary married Earnest on June 7, 1945, in Kansas City, KS.  She graduated from Marysville High School in 1922.   Her father ran Barlow Grocery in Marysville, KS.  Mary worked for J.C. Penney for eight years, where she met Earnest.  She is survived by two stepsons, Robert, of Phoenix, AZ, and Howard, of Liberal, KS.  She has five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one nephew and two nieces.

She was born October 12, 1921, in Norborne, Mo, the daughter of Minnie and Henry Hesterberg.  She was a 20 year resident of Olathe and a Women's Auxiliary member of the Earl Collier Post 153 of the American Legion in Olathe.  She was the youngest of 11children, two of which survive her, a brother, Walter Hesterberg, Norborne, Mo, and a sister, Flora Breidemeier, Kansas City, Mo.

Other survivors include her husband Vernon "Andy'' Andersen, Olathe, Ks; sons, Tommy Barlow, California, Mo, Glenn King, Aloha, Or, Charles Andersen, Altus, Ok, Robert Andersen, England, Scott  Andersen, Fort Hood, TX; daughters, Rosalie Swearingen, Warrenville, SC, Martha Ann Campbell, Spring Hill, KS, Marjorie Reddy, Clinton,IA, Michelle Brewer, Altus, OK; 29 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Yvonne Ballinger Barlow, 84, died April 24, 1997, in Phoenix where she had been living for the past five years.  Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m.Saturday, May 3, at Forest Hill Cemetery, 69th and Troost Ave.  Donations may be made to the charity of choice.

A longtime Kansas City resident, she was born in Newburg, Mo, to Harly and Jessie Davidson.  She attended Drury College and Tulsa University prior to moving to Kansas City.  She married Robert E. Ballinger in 1938t o whom she was married until his death in 1971.  They were very active in youth tennis programs and were members of Rockhill Tennis Club.  She volunteered at the Richard Cabot Club.

In 1985, she married Vernon Barlow who died the following year.  Survivors include her sons, Todd R. Ballinger of Kansas City and James K. Ballinger of Phoenix.  Two granddaughters, Erin and Cameron, also survive.
