**German Berry and Susannah Bailes**

German Berry 2 (John1)   son of John Berry was born c1766 in North Carolina, and died April 25, 1834 in Simpson Co Mississippi.
**         He married Susanah Bailes.   I believe she was born c1780, and died August 24, 1863 in Simpson Co Mississippi
        The death date from the William Scarborough, I do not know his source.

I am told that German had a wife previous to Susannah, but do not have a name or verification of
that. The first wife is probably be the mother of the first 3 sons, and may be the mother of all of
his children, though without dates of marriage, it would be hard to prove.

* In 1840, I am not sure where Susannah is living, but believe she may be the eldest female in the
home of her son, Stephen Berry.

In 1850, Stephen had removed to Arkansas, and apparently Charity Berry Walker was deceased,
and thus Susannah was living with Willis Walker, probably helping to care for the family. Her
age is 70.

Again, on the 1860 Westville, Simpson Co census, I find a Susan Berry, age 73, born in North
Carolina who may also be the widow of German Berry. How will we ever know? As for the age
variations from census to census, that is not unusual as you will know if you have ever studied
any genealogy!

There may have been other children who remained in Alabama.

Henry H. Berry 3 (German2, John1) was born c1794 in North Carolina, and died July 25, 1861 in Drew Co Arkansas. * Henry had been married prior to Cynthia, his first wife is said to be buried in an unmarked grave in Alabama, name unknown. * He married Cynthia Turely / Tureau December 25, 1823 in Morgan Co Alabama

Land records of January 1819, Etowah / Cotaco Co Alabama shows that Henry obtained land in Sec
20-T7-3W

Their are probably children born to Henry besides James David in Alabama, but I do not have records
of them, and the first child I know being born in Mississippi is from the 1850 census, being Mary A.
Berry, aged 16, thus she would have been born about 1834.
If they also lived in Simpson Co, then I am confused as to the records, as I can only locate one Henry
in Simpson Co, whom I had assumed to be Henry and Zillah Huckaby Berry, son of John & Edith Polk
Berry.

One source tells us she was a twin, and her parents from Germany. I wonder if Susan, who married
John Berry is her sister? Ages are different in the 1850 census, so they are not twins.

     He married Mary Elizabeth Wilkes, on July 10, 1841 in Marion Co Mississippi.
     She was the daughter of Stephen Hitchcock Wilkes and Mary McNeese, and sister to Martha Jane Wilkes who
     married Richard Talley Berry.   She was born February 15, 1822 in Alabama.

Wilkes Genealogy shows James David Berry to be the son of John and Edith Polk Berry
The book also indicated that James and Mary had no children, however, I believe the 1850 census disproves that.

* The census records prior to 1850 leave a lot to be desired.   I have gone round and round with
this, and can only suggest how I think it could be.   I suggest that unless Miss McLaurin was
older than Stephen, she is deceased, and that the eldest female here might be Susannah Bailes
Berry. She is living with Willis Walker in 1850, but other than this record, I cannot find another
female who might meet the age requirements to be her.   While this one would be off 10 years
from the 1850 census, my experience has been, that is to be expected in most census records.
Who is the other adult male? Is he a sibling?

Researchers show 3 children born to Stephen prior to his move to Arkansas; names are said
to be Martha, Susan, and another female Berry who married a Smith. These children apparently
did not accompany Stephen and Mary to Arkansas, unless they had already married and using
other surnames.

On the other hand, I have found several Berry children living in households of other families, it is
possible that Stephen the children of his first marriage did not want to accompany him and his
new wife to Arkansas, and thus were living with relatives.

I have had researchers tell me that Stephen was a US Senator from Arkansas in 1910..However,
he would have been almost 110 years old at that time ... and a search of Arkansas politicians did
not find any Stephen Berry's to be named in Arkansas politics. I did find a James Henderson
Berry, who was a US State Senator from Arkansas for 1907, but as yet, I have not even tried to
find a connection to our Berry family.
I do live in Arkansas currently, and our current US Senator is one Robert Marion Berry, who may
well be related to our branch, but that will be left to other genealogists to figure out.

                The son of Rev. Francis Marion Walker and Charity Elizabeth Bush, he was born c1795 in Edgefield Co South Carolina,
                and died before October 1850.

After Charity's death, Willis married Martha Brinson, on June 06, 1836 in Lawrence Co Mississippi, and they had children:

Albert G., Francis Marion, Missouri, James M., Pleasant A., and Martha Walker.

Of these children, Pleasant A. Walker married Nancy J. McCaskill, and their daughter, Missouria Walker married Myer Estell Berry, son of Abner Wilkes Berry and Elizabeth Magee

I cannot locate another Alfred that might fit the criteria for this one, what I did find, could possibly be him, the ages do not always confirm the relationships.

I did find an Alfred in 1870 Lawrence Co, age 30, married to Sarah, age 28, and
a son, William, age 16, this may or may not be him.

An Alfred in Lawrence Co, 1880, he and his wife Sally are both aged 55!
