John Jackson Berry and Alisie Miles

Notice:     I  have several persons who contributed to this work, I have tried to verify it all thru census records, but those prior to 1840, as well as maiden names of spouses, I cannot verify.  If you should have any other verification or documents  that prove this lineage in any way, please let me know.    Searching census records, I believe I have identified allof  the children of John and Alise, and have them all accounted for between 1830 and 1880

In  some  cases, when the male head of family is not listed in the census, we 'assume'  he is deceased, or when he has a spouse with a different name, we assume the previous one is deceased,  but we must always remember the possiblity of divorce, which I am  finding more  and more prevalent in those times.     Susan BARLOW Holmes

John Jackson "Jack" Berry3    (John2, John1) son of John Berry and Edith Polk, was born May 19, 1803 in South Carolina, and died August 17, 1859

He married  Alisie "Alcy" Miles  between 1825 -1827, probably in Alabama. The daughter of William 'Hardy' Miles and Mary Powell, she was born October 15, 1807 in Tennessee, and died June 13, 1883

Both are buried in Strong River Cemetery, Pinola, Simpson Co Mississippi

THE SIMPSON COUNTY BERRY PATCH  states  that  he died in  August, 1860, of  heart disease. Twenty-three days later Alise Miles Berry passed away at the age of seventy-five.

The  information for Alise,  is incorrect, as she is enumerated in the 1860-1880 census, and her death date has been given to me as 1883 and 1884.

Also from the Berry Patch, I find the following information, but have not verified, are the following notes:

John  Jackson "Jack" Berry  became well known and respected in the county as he served in the Mississippi Legislature for Simpson County in 1840 ~ 1844 ~ 1846 ~ 1857 ~ 1858.   The  new laws of  Mississippi were  just published and was their guiding tools for the next few years.

Some excerpts----

"....that all that  portion of  Copiah County west  of  Pearl River shall form and constitute  the county of Copiah; and all that portion of said county east of Pearl River shall form one county to be known by  the name of Simpson, in memory of the late honorable Josiah Simpson..."

"...the county town in the county of Simpson, shall be known by the name of Westville, in memory of the late Col. Cato West...  Approved January 23, 1824"

"...Acts for colored  persons  not to sell spirituous liquors,  not to be employed in printing offices, nor  to keep houses of entertainment, not to act as ministers of the gospel; not to vend goods out of  the limits to town..."

Alise was a granddaughter of William Miles, who died in Missouri, and the daughter of Hardy Miles, a famous Revolutionary  soldier who was born in 1760,  and  died  at the age  of 74 in Rankin Co  Mississippi.  This was testified to by 32 men, including Colonel John Berry and his  brother in-law's  William Gardner, and Simon Polk.  (Husbands of Mary and Centilla Berry)

Colonel John and Alise Berry lived near old Stonewall, where Mt. Zion Baptist Church is  located near Westville.

Children of John Berry and Alisie Miles are:

+38 i.
William H. "Bill" Berry4   born c1826 in Mississippi, and died in 1890 at Florence, Rankin Co Mississippi, burial in the Steen Creek Cemetery, Florence, Rankin Co Mississippi
said to be a child of John and Alisie by more than one researcher
+39 ii.
Denson Berry    born April 19, 1827 in Mississippi, and died October 05, 1865 in Simpson Co Mississippi, burial in Strong River Cemetery, Simpson Co Mississippi
Several  persons also named a Samuel as a child of JJ and Ally, the age the same as Denson, I think he may have been named Samuel Denson.
+40 iii.
Dennis Pickney Berry   born April 19, 1829 or 1831 in Mississippi, and died January 15, 1905 in Simpson Co Mississippi, burial in Strong River Cemetery, Simpson Co Mississippi
41 iv. Henry C. Berry  born c1828-1831 in Mississippi
Not in 1870 Simpson Co, and I have been unable to locate him in Mississippi
I do find  H.C. Berry  39 Miss. Inf., also shown as Henry Berry, 6th Ms Inf., Co H, Private "Simpson Fencibles"
I wonder if he might have died in the war.
+42 v.
Tally Miles Berry    born October 20, 1831, and died September 13, 1913, burial in the Columbia City Cemetery, Marion Co Mississippi.
+43 vi.
John Jackson "Jack" Berry, Jr.    born October 09, 1834, and died Easter Sunday, April 19, 1908, burial in Strong River Cemetery, Simpson Co Mississippi
+44 vii.
Martha A.J. Berry   born October 27, 1836, and died February 15, 1906, burial in Traylor Cemetery, south of Pinola, Simpson Co Mississippi
+45 viii.
Thomas Jackson Berry    born  c1838-1840 in Alabama or Mississippi, and died October 02, 1877 in Simpson Co Mississippi
The Bible record of Dennis P. Berry Bible shows a T.J. Berry dying October 02, 1877 - This may be a case of 10/02/1877 being reversed to 02/10/1877 by a researcher
+46 ix.
Elizabeth J. Berry, born January 25, 1842, and died January 23, 1903, burial in Mountain Creek Cemetery, Rankin Co Mississippi
47 x. Flavillia Berry  born c1844 in Mississippi, and died April 05, 1872
She married  Samuel Terry

I have been unable to locate them in the areas I have researched
Children from researchers are said to be:  Betty, Robert, Dennis, Denson and Anna Terry.
+48 xi.
Albert Gallatin Berry   born c1847, and died February 22, 1889, burial in Old Westville Cemetery, Simpson Co Mississippi
+49 xii.
Eley / Mary A. Berry    born February 15, 1850, and died May 31, 1894, burial in Steen Creek Cemetery, Florence, Rankin Co Mississippi.
In the 1850 census, Eley is shown, as age 3 mo. Since the census was taken in Oct, I would assume her to be born in August. However Eley is not in the census for 1860, instead Mary is shown, born c1848, so I am assuming them to be the same child. Dates from cemetery records conflict with both ages shown in census records.
+50 xiii.
Franklin Pierce Berry    born July 27, 1852 in Mississippi, and died May 28, 1910, burial in Strong River Cemetery, Simpson Co Mississippi
