Ann McNair submits the following:
Published in the Westville News, Westville, Simpson Co Mississippi on May 03, 1900:
"Reminiscences of Simpson County - Historical Events That Happened Years Ago"
written by the late Hon. T.L. Mendenhall in 1889

Stephen Gardner moved from Marion county about 1828, and settled on the head of this prong of Silver creek, above where E.M. Brooks now lives, where he died about 25 years ago, leaving no children. He willed his property to his nephew, W. W. Gardner.

So .... apparently Stephen is Wm.'s uncle, brother of his father.
Wilkin served first in the Westville Guards of the 16th Mississippi Regiment, organized September 18, 1860.   The Westville Guards were the only Simpson County soldiers who fought at Gettysburg.  Since Wilkin was then in Co H, 27th Regt from Feb-June 1862,  it is  unlikely he  fought at  Gettysburg, however.    He was then  in  Co H,  6th  MS  Regiment, CSA, Private; discharged at Vicksburg in 1865.  The changes of regiments probably were  because he had a leg broken twice during war and  was  sent  home to  recuperate  each time.

This information about the leg was found by Sally Patterson while doing research in the Simpson Co Courthouse
